Yep, so far 2020 has been hell around here. First, my favorite Cat died in January. In mid-February my 90 year old Bed-bound Dad died of something that fit all the symptoms of the Chinese virus. Of course, back then they weren't testing anyone for the Virus, especially if you had been in Hospice for over a year and Bed-bound. Then in March SETI died. I'm dreading April. The only Good thing that happened was no one in direct contact with my Dad has turned up ill...that I know of, and I'm finally receiving Social Security checks. Big changes. I suddenly have this overwhelming sense of Freedom. I'm not quite sure what to do with it yet, maybe I'll come up with a plan once all the paranoia ends. I'm perfectly healthy, and apparently have stared the evil in it's eye and held it's hand. Now if I could just find some TP in one of the stores...

Perhaps we should all set up a new team called Seti Orphans, and go invade another project.. ? :-)

P.S. my personal choice would be Einstein@home as closest in spirit one.
Will see if it can feed all my different devices. Not compatible ones will search for new targets...

The trick to managing work at E@H is to set a really, really small cache. Like 0.1days. Then you basically run on a "turn one in - get one" schedule.

Hi petri, keep in mind they have two different types of tasks there, the low GPU utilized tasks must be the Gravity Wave task. it requires a lot of spare CPU support. I've seen 150% CPU thread per GPU. The Gamma Ray tasks pull only 100% CPU thread and have good 98% GPU utilization.
I would love to see if optimizations are possible there! tilt the scales back towards the nvidia cards :). as it stands, the project heavily favors AMD cards.

Einstein will do the same if you give it a small resource share, because it has a 7 day deadline. It insists on filling up to your cache size, then doesn't run for 5 days or so then panics and has to do more work than the resource share allows. Then come the Seti outrage and it would refill the cache, wash, rinse, repeat.

Personally I was just pondering what I was going to do for this years WOW event. Whether in fact I would enter at all as it struck me last year as not very environmentally friendly.
Seems the decision has been taken out of my hands. I will crunch on my 4 main machines until there is nothing left to crunch, then I will be left with 5 750 Ti's, 2 1050's, 2 1060, and a 970 with nothing to do.
Whether I will crunch for another project remains to be seen, SETI was really the only one that ever interested me.

Open one "SETI orphans" Café or Pub in every country city where we have SETI@home participants :-)

I'll go to a project that has an open source code for Nvidia GPUS and an off-line test suite similar to Seti@home.

If a task is already on your valid list, then it won't be resent when its remaining wingman's task expires. When it expires, The WU will get assimilated and purged.

Parkes would have been the preferred radio telescope for Sgr A*.

and any space based array would be the more optimal solution again.

There is still the Southern Hemisphere yet to be checked with existing radio telescopes. And the more data from the north, the more points of reference for that area.

I'm not sure that we can interrogate that much more in the universe by using sites in the southern hemisphere. We have a pretty good idea what surrounds us in all directions. I think any amount of data we can get from that would be minimal. We are at the point that basing more telescopes off world are far more interesting.

Again...very speculative on the return of SETI. I'm not feeling good about that prospect coming up.

projects who employ short deadlines don't have to deal with the bloat on their servers that comes from users like that.

They might decide to cancel Tasks in the next week or so if they get a Canonical Result, which might upset a few people who have cached thousands of WUs :) but it might upset some very slow crunchers too.
Are people like the "1337" guy, and a few others; here to get the science completed as quickly as possible, or are they just here for the BOINC credits ?

At the current rate of return on the SSP, most of the results should be back in about 17 days.

Maybe a wise thing to do is abort and resend with a small dateline all the WU from hosts who last contact was before april 1.
If a host has not contact with the servers in the last 15 days is highly probable is a powered down host.
Just a suggestion.

If the Project Staff were in the lab, and not working from home, then it might be worthwhile.
.CA is still on lockdown as far as I know https://covid19.ca.gov/ so they may want to wait until they are back.
