发表于:17 Apr 2020 作者: Stephen "Heretic" ![]() Post: I wonder why the people who quit are not detaching from the project. What I have read from the scheduler source suggests that doing that would release all the work to be sent to others. Ghosts too. . . That would make it a good practice but I am guessing no-one passed that knowledge on to the rank and file volunteers, I had certainly not heard it before though it does make perfect sense. 发表于:16 Apr 2020 作者: Stephen "Heretic" ![]() Post: Yep, so far 2020 has been hell around here. First, my favorite Cat died in January. In mid-February my 90 year old Bed-bound Dad died of something that fit all the symptoms of the Chinese virus. Of course, back then they weren't testing anyone for the Virus, especially if you had been in Hospice for over a year and Bed-bound. Then in March SETI died. I'm dreading April. The only Good thing that happened was no one in direct contact with my Dad has turned up ill...that I know of, and I'm finally receiving Social Security checks. Big changes. I suddenly have this overwhelming sense of Freedom. I'm not quite sure what to do with it yet, maybe I'll come up with a plan once all the paranoia ends. I'm perfectly healthy, and apparently have stared the evil in it's eye and held it's hand. Now if I could just find some TP in one of the stores... . . It has been a bi^&h of a year here too, drought, massive bushfires then flooding. My dad died years ago but it is a hard time to get through, and the adopted stray cat that I was feeding disappeared about the time of S@H ending. Can't say I am feeling much freedom though. But otherwise I can sympathise with the battle against the blue meanies. Stephen :( |

Then you basically run on a "turn one in - get one" schedule. . . I set their resource share to 0% and get one for one without changing cache settings. Stephen :) |

发表于:16 Apr 2020 作者: Stephen "Heretic" ![]() Post: Einstein will do the same if you give it a small resource share, because it has a 7 day deadline. It insists on filling up to your cache size, then doesn't run for 5 days or so then panics and has to do more work than the resource share allows. Then come the Seti outrage and it would refill the cache, wash, rinse, repeat. . . I am getting 14 day deadlines at E@H, 7 days I think at WCG and 72 hours at Rosetta. But as a backup I ran/run E@H with 0% resource share and I get 1 task at time so I have one waiting to report and one running. This works pretty well for me. Stephen :) |

发表于:16 Apr 2020 作者: Stephen "Heretic" ![]() Post: Personally I was just pondering what I was going to do for this years WOW event. Whether in fact I would enter at all as it struck me last year as not very environmentally friendly. . . I thought you had a 1660ti as well? But I feel much like you. I have left three machines on E@H because it was my 'backup' project but I only do their tasks on the GPUs. To utilise the CPU I have tried Rosetta but had several issues there so I moved to WCG where I am not experiencing problems. But I do not feel the connection with either project (however worthwhile) that I have enjoyed with S@H. Stephen :( |

发表于:16 Apr 2020 作者: Stephen "Heretic" ![]() Post: . . Hi, . . I think this tells a story of what we are up against. This user looks like they did 'the right thing', when deciding to quit S@H on 19th March they aborted all their work, somewhere between 240 and 300 tasks I am guessing, maybe more because there are still 240 showing. But they seem to have 17,500 (roughly) ghosted tasks. Since they are no longer reporting to the servers the auto-ghost resend mechanism will not work. A shame they had not checked their stats earlier than their decision to leave, it might have taken just one ghost recovery attempt, because most of their ghosts would have simply 'expired'. 发表于:16 Apr 2020 作者: Stephen "Heretic" ![]() Post: Parkes would have been the preferred radio telescope for Sgr A*. . . The things about looking towards the centre of the Galaxy is that there is a lot more of the Galaxy to be seen than out here on the fringe. There is a helluva lot of real estate to monitor between here and the actual Galactic centre. I guess if YOU were on a mission at the edge of the Arctic ice cap wanting to communicate with other people you would aim your dish at the North pole rather than say, London? . . Oh, and one other very critical fact. We HAVE Parkes and have had for many decades. So when are you going to build these off world radio telescopes? Stephen :( |

And the more data from the north, the more points of reference for that area. . . Ohhhh ssooooo wrong, the truly Southern observatories can add so much more observing time on our own Milky Way galaxy which is where the best hope of getting a signal lies. Observing other galaxies (the main gain from off-world telescopes) is a worthwhile goal for astro-physics, but not so much for finding ET. Stephen :( |

发表于:16 Apr 2020 作者: Stephen "Heretic" ![]() Post: Again...very speculative on the return of SETI. I'm not feeling good about that prospect coming up. . . Sadly nor am I. It might have a slim chance if there are people with serious clout pushing for it and someone/s with serious cash willing to sponsor it. So far there have apparently been no other projects looking to take advantage of the hardware and volunteer resources S@H has developed over 2 decades. <sigh> Stephen :( |

发表于:15 Apr 2020 作者: Stephen "Heretic" ![]() Post: projects who employ short deadlines don't have to deal with the bloat on their servers that comes from users like that. . . Rosetta = 72 hours (wouldn't people complain here), E@H = 14 days. Both manage to function but I wouldn't recommend trying Rosetta on a really low end or very old system, it needs at least 8GB ram, it might work with only 4GB but I'm not willing to try it. 发表于:15 Apr 2020 作者: Stephen "Heretic" ![]() Post: They might decide to cancel Tasks in the next week or so if they get a Canonical Result, which might upset a few people who have cached thousands of WUs :) but it might upset some very slow crunchers too. . . Juan's proposal was that machines which have NOT contacted the servers since the official end of splitting have their outstanding tasks annulled. Other machines, fast or slow, that are regularly returning results would not be affected. But it is merely hypothetical anyway. . . As for second guessing the motivation for the massive bunkers being reported, the inference would be the latter option. But a third option occurs to me. Perhaps they anticipated, like most of us, that the clean up stage would last for months, and they wanted enough work to keep their machines occupied for that time. I can understand the desire to keep a machine busy to justify the power used to run it 24/7, this is why I am running E@H, but I chose a method which would not contribute to slowing the whole clean up process. Stephen :) |
