You could always try driving away at 150mph while drinking a six pack......

Sorry Lester...couldn't resist. LMAO

Ah, but then you run the risk of getting nailed with a RWI (Running While Intoxicated).

Do Teddy Bears wear blue speedos ?[/quote]

I don't think so. Boy Teddy Bears are usually more conservative (unlike girl Teddy Bears).

Now, does it matter what kind of bear it is?

We have American Black Bears, Brown Bears, Polar Bears, Panda Bears, Asiatic Black Bears, Sloth Bears, Spectacled Bears (no, they do not wear glasses) and Sun Bears. Oh, and we have Teddy Bears. These are not to be confused with Teddy Boys which should be discussed in a different thread.

Ah, all very important considerations. Also, it might be important to consider the current emotional state of the bear, as well as any past offenses. Teddy Bears are quite harmless so one doesn't need to worry about them.

I beg to differ on the statement that Teddy Bears are quite harmless. This one, I do think you need to worry about......

Are we back to cows again?

PS Nice to see you here Sir Robin. Greetings from (ex) Sir Ice ;)

Or of course, you could just pray to the Holy Cow !!!!!!

Now, if there was more than one person encountering a bear, this may apply:

Two hikers come face to face with an enormous bear that rises up on its haunches and roars at them.

"What do we do?" the first hiker asks.
"Run!" said the second.
"Do you really think you can outrun a bear?" said the first hiker.
"No, but I can outrun you."

And, from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources:

Bear Wise - What To Do If You Encounter a Bear

Bears are normally shy of humans and quickly get out of our way when they see us. There are a number of things you can do if you spot a bear on a trail or one enters your campsite or yard.

Do not approach the bear to get a better look. Slowly back away while watching the bear and wait for it to leave.

If you are near a building or car, get inside it as a precaution. If the bear was attracted to food or garbage, make sure it is removed after the bear leaves to discourage the bear from returning.

It is important to keep dogs away from a bear. While a well-trained dog may deter a bear, a poorly trained one may only excite it resulting in the bear following the dog back to its owner.

If a bear is in a tree, leave it alone. Remove people and dogs from the area. The bear will usually come down and leave when it feels safe.

If a bear is trying to get at food in your yard or campsite (and a building or a car is not within reach) or if a bear tries to approach you, here is how you should react:

Stop. Face the bear. Do not run. If you are with others, stay together and act as a group. Make sure that the bear has a clear escape route, then yell and wave your arms to make yourself look bigger. Use a whistle or airhorn if you have one. The idea is to be aggressive and to persuade the bear to leave. This will work if the bear is still partly afraid of humans.

If these attempts fail to frighten the bear away, slowly back away watching the bear and giving it a wide berth.

Climbing a tree to get away from a bear may offer you little advantage as black bears are excellent tree climbers.

A bear may stand upright to get a better view, make huffing or "popping" sounds, swat or beat the ground with its forepaws or even bluff charge. These are a bear's way of telling you that you are too close. Back off and give the bear more space. If the bear comes within range, use pepper.

They then go on to state:

IN AN IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY: contact your local police force or dial 911

TO REPORT BEAR PROBLEMS: contact the Bear Reporting Line at
1-866-514-BEAR (2327) (TTY) 705 945-7641

Ah, excuse me Mr. Bear while I make this 911 call........

I have however, had a breakthrough. Even though I had NOT set any BOINC Advanced / Preferences, I did try a "Clear" and voila..... multiple WUs did download. I think that was probably the issue. Many thanks!

Robin

Where is the "Clear" you used, I don't seem to see it anywhere.

Thanks

I have BOINC version 5.10.7 and use the "Accessible" view.

On the toolbar, go to "Advanced" and then to "Preferences". This will pop up another screen. On the top right, there is a "Clear" button. It shows up on all three tabs for Processor Usage, Network Usage and Disk and Memory Usage.

Hope this helps.

Robin

OK, thanks, I have 5.8.15, I probably should update.

Hmmm, to update, can someone let me know what to do - do I just shut down BOINC and download the current version? Will it "upgrade" automatically or do I need to do something.

Thanks.

1) Download the BOINC version you want. It will not install until you execute the program.
2) Shut down BOINC.
3) Execute the BOINC file you downloaded.

Very simple to do.

Try going into the BOINC option => Advanced / Preferences and select "Clear". I had the same prolem, and that resolved the issue.

I am running BOINC 5.10.7 on Windows XP PRo with a P4-3.2 Dual Core and 512 MB Ram. Also running the latest Chicken Apps.

My preferences are set to connect at 0.1 days with an additional 5.9 day pad. All other options are set for optimum processing (while in use, no restrictions etc.)

I now only have about 14 hours of SETI work left and as you see above, BOINC is only requesting 42 seconds of work.

Any ideas?

Not enough RAM for a dual-core system (processes two units at a time, each requiring about 32MB or more of RAM, plus whatever else you happen to be running)?

What are your "CPU efficiency" and "RDCF" values?

Has your total WU allowed per day been decreased due to recently expired ghost units?

5.9 days of cache on SETI, which has short deadlines may run the system into panic mode, which will cause it to not download more work until it feels it's in the clear. You may want to reduce it to 2 or 3 days cache unless you have a specific need for more (use dial-up, don't connect very often, etc).

Thanks OzzFan.

My CPU efficiency is 0.887392 and my RDCF is 0.332602. I have not paid attention to my total WU allowed per day, but it is at 95/day per CPU.

I had only increased my cache to try to get more work for when outages occur. I just kept raising it when no extra work was downloaded.

I have however, had a breakthrough. Even though I had NOT set any BOINC Advanced / Preferences, I did try a "Clear" and voila..... multiple WUs did download. I think that was probably the issue. I will now lower my cache to a more reasonable level.

Perhaps other who are not getting work may also want to try this.

Many thanks!

11) Questions and Answers : Windows : Incomplete WUs on hard drive not in BOINC client (Message 229870)

Post:
Hello,

I have had a few power outages today that have shut down my PC. Upon startup, my BOINC client seems to have lost all of the work that was currently in progress (SETI and others). Having said this, there are many work files that I can still see in my project folder on the hard drive. In addition, when BOIC started up after the abnormal shutdow, all of my projects (that have been flagged not to accept new work), reverted back to and tried to accept new work from all of them. This has happened three times today.

Oh, and it has lost my total and average credits for the LHC project (now shut down).

I have run the BOINC install and selected the repair option. This did not help.

Any ideas on how to retrive the WUs from my hard drive and get them back into BOINC?

Running Windows XP Pro
P4 3.2GH Dual Processors
512MB RAM
Boinc 5.2.13

Thanks,

Robin
