Posted 5 Oct 2022 by ![]() ![]() Post: Ha - I don't know if it will EVER have enough stability and robust enough server farm to withstand a challenge. I do hope it will be stable enough for regular science load though. I'm getting an error trying to log in to WCG right now. sigh. I was so excited to get the email because I thought that meant that they were close to ending testing phase. Then they had to walk that back on the forums. They are really really bad at communication. |

The website is down for me right now, so I thought I'd pop in here. I did get a new WU when I asked a little while ago, so it is just the website. |

All subdomains of *.worldcommunitygrid.org which includes the upload, download, and scheduler URLs are currently experiencing an outage due to a networking failure. We are working to resolve this issue and bring the system back online ASAP. New information will be shared here. |

I read your post Grumpy Swede, and it was getting to me... you are right... the lack of communication is a very telling sign, and not a good one. I sent them a tweet, and I was hoping to get a response, but nothing. They have a communications person, so it isn't like they would have to stop the fixing to tweet. Then surprise surprise... I'm hoping they made a mistake and are trying to fix it. |

I've been happy to crunch some ARP WUs again and I haven't gotten the transit errors on the last few. I hope the server being down is a good sign... like they are fixing something major. edit to add: hmmm. boinc can connect to WCG, so it is just the website that is down. - Unixchick |

Posted 12 May 2022 by ![]() ![]() Post: Late with the reopening and late with the statement of when they will reopen. Technically they have until midnight their time, so I hope we will get an announcement soon, but it isn't going to be good news, or they would have already said something. I'm staying off twitter today as I haven't finished watching the Eurovision semifinal 2 (no spoilers, please), so hopefully they post the announcement to their website quickly. I've been checking in here hoping that if it pops up on FB or Twitter first that someone will post it. |

Posted 10 May 2022 by ![]() ![]() Post: I am usually an optimistic person, but as a former admin I knew there would be a bit of delay, but I truly thought they would just be a day or two off. I don't think they are getting much help in the transition from IBM. They have invested alot of time and effort to take WCG, so I expect more issues to come, but hopeful (overly optimistic?) for long term continuity. I tried to go to Milky Way for my backup project, and then that project had major issues for a while, a couple of weeks?, so I suspect that we will get more down time on WCG going forward as the resources needed are never allocated to Boinc projects. oh well. I hope to see the conclusion of the ARP project. Then I might go to Milky Way if WCG doesn't have a new project that catches my eye. It is a shame though that they are coming back online just as summer heat will be hitting me, and I'll probably shut my machine off during the middle of the day. |

Posted 31 Mar 2022 by ![]() ![]() Post: I love me some chatter about Get Smart. great show, funny movie. I'm still missing Seti too. Hard to image another project having such a nice community as this one. While boinc was set up to help researchers get computing done, I think so many of the projects forget that it is also about letting people feel like they are a part of your project. Mac Boinc Question: I'm running 7.16.19 and they just released 7.16.21. There are NO release notes on changes, so I'm guessing the update is too minor for me to bother with. Anyone have more info? |

Posted 5 Mar 2022 by ![]() ![]() Post: The validator started falling behind on Milky Way a couple of days ago. I asked at what point the system would crash (I admit I was being a snot) The admin replied that the system wouldn't go down and said the validator could be behind 2 Billion and it would still be fine. It crossed the 2 million mark this morning (way less than 2 billion) and went down a few hours later. When the system is up I like the nice short tasks of MW. I'm not going to look for other projects at the moment as I have too much else going on in life, but if anyone finds a good backup backup project they like, let me know. |

Posted 1 Mar 2022 by ![]() ![]() Post: most of the boinc projects are scientists trying to do research, but also having to do all the computer maintenance etc. There never seems to be enough money to have up to date hardware and a dedicated computer person. I really liked the concept of WCG and I can't understand why IBM gave up on the idea. I miss Seti, and now I miss WCG. I'm worried you are right about WCG not lasting. Even if it does work for a while, it won't be the same. |
