Confirmed Dr. K. is on it... he indicated adaptive replication was enabled to get the queues down, but still this doesn't seem to be as planned. He may post a News update on it. If not I'll try to get info.

I don't remember ever seeing this before even through other database issues, so just in case this is an unplanned and unwanted side effect of Tuesday's changes, I've sent a note off to Dr. Korpela. I'll advise if I get any info on it. Thanks TBar... good catch! Yes, I did find some like that in my queues as well.

Checking on tasks, it shows that they are still in progress & checking on the wu, it shows "suppressed pending completion". Never seen that before.

It's come up in other threads in this forum... it appears to have been introduced in the most recent Tuesday and the hypothesis is that it's to reduce the database transactions.

That will be the day that I dump Winders into the nearest dumpster, set fire to it and go 100% Linux and give up gaming

Just out of curiosity, I checked my favorite game retailer GOG and there are now around 1,200 of their titles with Linux editions. This includes best-sellers ie The Witcher series.

If your favorite game doesn't have a Linux edition, plenty of them work under WINE. For example, the WINE top 10 Platinum list (Platinum = All features work perfectly and completely with little or no configuration) contains EVE Online, StarCraft 1.16.1 (Brood War), Team Fortress 2 , Counter-Strike, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Company of Heroes, Spore and System Shock.

So, one needn't give up gaming (anymore!)

(cc'ed from NC)

I contacted Dr. Korpela and he inidcated that there still is some throttling going on to keep the total results less than 20M (lest we have the same issue where the results table exceeds memory) which is probably why the BLC splitters were disabled earlier. No doubt the "shorty storm" from blc35_2bit_guppi_58691_* is causing this. In the interim things seem to be improving and I'm getting just enough work to keep my machines busy, so it should be over soon.

This morning all hosts are completely empty. So either I have very bad luck in the filling queue or there is still a problem with the RTS buffer and splitting.

Same here... only my slower hosts have enough work. Every time that I have checked the result creation rate since the outrage ended it has been 8/sec. or so (and the page has certainly updated since then.) Now all the GBT splitters are showing disabled. so I think that result creation is still being throttled.

There are 5M results in the field even with this, so again it seems to fall back on the three-quorum validation being in place due to the bad AMD hosts.

I've been with no work for just over 24 hrs now on 5 computers and none of them have been able to "report" any results. I've about 300 plus units "ready to report" and it's been that way since yesterday.

Expect several hours more like this due to the servers being battered by 100,000+ dry hosts after two days offline.

Italicized names have replied and indicated they are disabling their affected GPUs.
Struck-through names are confirmed to no longer be producing these bad results, ie via disabling GPU computing.

The BOINC platform code itself isn't affected, rather it's the client executable that BOINC (or WCG) downloads. Each project will have to recompile their client for the new drivers to set the required flag. BOINC will then download the new client automatically (unless they have an "anonymous" manually installed client lke the Lunatics one here.)

I don't know why I haven't seen more lawsuits over this practice, but better late than never:

Family Sues DEA and TSA After Elderly Man's Life Savings Were Seized at Airport

A class-action lawsuit is now challenging the DEA's habit of seizing large amounts of cash from travelers without evidence of any crime.

C.J. Ciaramella | 1.16.2020 5:26 PM
Terry-Rolin-IJ2_9354
(Institute for Justice)

Terrence Rolin kept his life savings in a Tupperware container, but all that money now belongs to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), even though the 79-year-old retired railroad engineer hasn't been charged with a crime.

When Rolin's daughter, Rebecca Brown, tried to take her fathers' savings—$82,373 in cash—on an airplane, a DEA agent seized it simply because large amounts of cash are considered suspicious by the agency.

Brown and Rolin are now the lead plaintiffs in a federal class-action lawsuit filed Wednesday by the Institute for Justice, a libertarian-leaning public interest law firm, challenging the DEA and TSA's practice of seizing large amounts of cash from airline passengers without any evidence of any underlying crime.

"Flying with any amount of cash is completely legal, but once again we see government agents treating American citizens like criminals," Institute for Justice senior attorney Dan Alban said in a press release. "You don't forfeit your constitutional rights when you try to board an airplane. It is time for TSA and federal law enforcement to stop seizing cash from travelers simply because the government considers certain amounts of cash 'suspicious.'"

Er? "but all that money now belongs to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)" Nah... stealing something doesn't make it yours. :^p

I'm convinced, as they started at the same time, that as the root cause of the issues has been determined to be too many results out in the field that what actually triggered this was turning on triple-quorum validation for overflow work units due to the bad AMD drivers which have now been corrected.

So, as it's now well-confirmed that the new drivers (and the recompiled 8.24 client to take advantage of them) resolve this problem, I'm making it a priority to re-contact all of the owners of known bad hosts and advise them to update, as well as all of the new owners of bad hosts I hadn't had a chance to. The faster we can get these updated, the less of a chance they can cross-validate and we can then go back to normal two-quorum validation which should resolve the excessive queues. I should have an update in that thread within a few hours once I have contacted all known bad host owners (plus catching up on my private message replies from them...)

It might even be worth declaring a splitter holiday and allowing work allocated before the outage to report, validate, assimilate, delete and purge before starting to fill up the database again.

Coincidentally (or not lol) Dr. Korpela has updated the News feed:

For a couple of reasons, the result table has grown to the point where it no longer fits in main memory. That has been slowing the validators and assimilators, which is causing the result table to grow further.

We'd like to get it down to a manageable size before our Tuesday outage. To that end we are throttling work generation to a rate at which the table size is shrinking. We hope that this rate will increase as the table gets smaller.

So for the next few days work will be hard to come by (but not zero).

Just what we were asking for... a simple brief update if there are issues.
