Living together on our Pale Blue Dot
(Message 956946)
Posted 17 Dec 2009 by Niko Post: Hello Seti-ites, This is a time of year when most folks are happy and a few are not. It is also a time when some have nothing to celebrate. I'm appalled at the number of folks that live on the streets of the closest large city to me, Toronto. TO has gotten much worse in the last 30 years because the provincial government has cut back transfer payments to the city which has had to close hostiles and help centers. I have something to share with you: http://perso.b2b2c.ca/nikos/Gods_Questions.pps I think it applies to all religions and to all the people living on our Pale Blue Dot. If you are a non-believer, please do not download this - I repect your freedom to believe in what you feel is The Path for you. Take care. |

Problem With V195.62 NVidia Drivers
(Message 956905)
Posted 17 Dec 2009 by Niko Post: 195.62 was crashing and I don't even use my CUDA card for crunching. Vista was recovering but it would say that the driver stopped working. I contacted Dell and they said the certified driver for my model of Dell computer is 186.34. I back-installed and the problems went away. I guess it pays to check the maker's site for your brand of computer to see what they recommend. If you built your rig from scratch, oh well... |

I can easily delete the jobs that I have running now that are eating up my cpu cycles. I am only responding in kind to to your appeals. Please don't give me heartburn. FG, heartburn is not good. You can turn off the option to receive emails from S@H in the SETI@home preferences section of your Account... Take care. |

New Year's Resolutions...
(Message 956897)
Posted 17 Dec 2009 by Niko Post: Salut! Every year I make 2 New Years Resolutions and I always keep them. One year, I ate Haggis and it almost killed me. This year I am going to eat a Baconator. Yes! I've watched the ads on TV for years and have never had one. I'm too chicken to try the Triple so it's going to be a Double. The video on You Tube is hysterical. What's your crazy New Year's Resolution fellow Seti-ites? |

Virgin Galactic SpaceShip2 unveiled
(Message 955267)
Posted 16 Dec 2009 by Niko Post: Does anyone know if this craft could dock with the International Space Station. It's initial flight apogee is 100 miles short of the ISS at its lowest point in orbit, which I guess is not a big deal in space, right? |

Are we alone?
(Message 955215)
Posted 16 Dec 2009 by Niko Post: The will isn't there to do this, not on earth anyway. I wonder if Planet Earth has enough natural resources for us to build a city on another planet? We would probably have to mine the planet we were intending to build on. But think of the resources needed to get to the planet with all our mining gear. That's big. If we stopped the wars and all got along, there would be enough money to not only explore our Galaxy, but to eradicate hunger and pollution on Earth for good. We will know very soon if we are / were alone in our solar system: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/johnson/news/releases/2009/J09-030.html. Maybe new technologies will wrap up that mystery with this particular Meteorite. I feel we are not alone in our solar system - there may be simple life on Venus, Mars or one of the moons around the larger planets. |

Some Animals executed four cops in my Town.
(Message 955178)
Posted 16 Dec 2009 by Niko Post: In Finnish version it clearly says "älä tapa" which means "do not kill". "do not murder" would be "älä murhaa". Don't blame me, if they teach us wrong in the rippikoulu (Confirmation). I don't blame you at all, HTH. I believe that mankind got some things wrong when they wrote it down. Your logic is basically saying that shooting/killing random people is not wrong, because it is not murdering people. I can't argue with you about that - your logic is sound. It's the Bible that says this... PS. I am a scientist, who believes in the String theory. I'm not interested in politics or religions. I'm a modern person and I have read enough of the modern Finnish Bible. You made my day - I have the deepest respect and admiration for people of science and medicine. When Pope John Paul II was shot and almost killed in 1981, he said that Our Lady of Fátima saved his life because she deflected the bullets away from his heart. What about the many fine surgeons that worked on him for 5 hours? Take care, HTH. |

Posted 16 Dec 2009 by Niko Post: Hitler and the execution of Pekurinen predates the Council of Europe's prohibition of the death penalty in all circumstances. Let's see how that holds up in the next war! Or do you feel there will never be another war on European soil? Pekurinen was first and foremost a conscientious objector. He would have been a coward to have forsaken his beliefs, that he did not do this even when faced with execution demonstrates that he was no such thing. As for being a traitor, I've found no evidence that he directly provided aid or assistance to the enemies of Finland, perhaps you could direct me to some. From the Webster dictionary: 1: one who betrays another's trust or is false to an obligation or duty His obligation and duty was to defend his country when the Russian's invaded it? You have obviously never been a soldier so you are forgiven :-) When one reaches the end of reasoned argument, there's always "It's in our nature". It may be in your nature to be a dictator and fight wars, but you do not speak for me. I don't speak for you - I speak based on the actions of the human race over the past 10,000 years. Try watching the History channel. Reasoned argument? Based on what you have written so far: I bet you have come to the US from another country and would NEVER step up to the plate to defend your new or home country. You would try to defect to Canada. Newsflash: those freedoms you enjoy in the US didn't come from the actions of traitors and cowards like Pekurinen. If I were you, I would back out of this now before you end up embarrassing yourself further. Take care, BOBBY. |

Does the state have the right to intervene?
(Message 955074)
Posted 16 Dec 2009 by Niko Post: While I fully believe in the responsibility of the state to step in and regulate matters of national economic importance, does this responsibility include stepping into the personal lifestyle choices made by citizens? No and No! But, if people sit on their backsides and allow the special interest groups to push their flavor-of-the-month agenda, you COULD wake up one day and find that Alcohol, Tobacco, Salt, Sugar and Red Meat are banned, period. The government does listen to what people are asking for and those that scream the loudest DO get the attention and eventually the support of the vote-seeking minions in Ottawa - even if they are a small minority. Maybe the government steps into the personal lifestyle choices made by citizens because we ask for it. The Politically Correct movement is one example that suggests that this may be so. Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS Robert. Out here in Thunder Bay, we can still use the 'C' word (for now). :-) |
