FAQ and comments about the Higley School District controversy
(Message 952950)
Posted 7 Dec 2009 by Mamluk Post: I suspect that our fine Doctor and the district in general would have taken a very different view if Nez (and by association the district) had been lucky enough to contribute towards the finding of ET. The PR would have gone along the line of the steadfast support the district and management had given Nez in his and Setis quest. |

(Message 952934)
Posted 7 Dec 2009 by Mamluk Post: And I will startup my GT 240 in few hours :) I started BOINC just prior to frying my BIOS. The results were not encouraging - CUDA 2.3, PhysX disabled: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GT240 (driver version 19562, CUDA version 3000, compute capability 1.2, 512MB, 279 GFLOPS peak) The GFLOPS are 15% less than my 8800GS on 19170. I didn't get to see how it would crunch though. |

Posted 4 Dec 2009 by Mamluk Post: And I will startup my GT 240 in few hours :) Mine is apparently (haven't seen it yet) a Galaxy 512mb GDDR3. The specs are in many aspects the same as the 8800GS I am currently running. I will be happy if I get performance similar to a 9800GT! We can compare notes on Monday... |

Posted 4 Dec 2009 by Mamluk Post: My GT240 has finally cleared customs. With a bit of luck, I will be putting the system together over the weekend. It will be interesting to see how the 195.62 driver behaves/performs with a "new" generation card - even if it is relatively weak. Fun it is. Always a bit nervous about firing up a new machine. Never know if the mobo is going to "beep beep beep"... Anyway, the GT240 was the last component required before I could start it up. Decided to wait and see what Fermi looks like, though XFX have been tempting me badly with their new HD5970 BE. |

Apparently x86 programs will just require a recompile to work. Overall computing power expected to be 4 times that of the i7 975XE, using just 45 watts. It would be exciting to have a 3rd mainstream CPU manufacturer. |

Posted 3 Dec 2009 by Mamluk Post: I though I was imagining things. I "upgraded" my nVidia driver to 195xx (beta) version a few weeks back on a single card. The wall clock times went up from about 25 minutes a WU to 30 minites. I then re-installed the 19107 driver. Unfortunately, my times did not go back to the 25 minute mark. I was just testing a VGA dummy (thanks to Sutaru) and noticed that the nVidia control panel had enabled PhysX. I had not noticed that as an option before. I have disabled it but it is too soon to tell if that was the problem. It appears that disabling PhysX has returned the wall clock timings to 25 minutes. |

Edit: I am also a little worried about Fermi relating to the GeForce line of products. I suspect that the Cuda/GPU processing capability will not match that of the Tesla line. The initial Teslas were based on geForce (280 or 285 I think) but they have now been built from the ground up for GPU processing. I think that GeForce will get a lesser offering. From what I understand, the GeForce Fermi is being released at least 1 month before the Tesla Fermi. I wonder why that is? |

Posted 1 Dec 2009 by Mamluk Post: Ok. That means you "can" connect to Berkeley. As a matter of interest, I get different replying IP addresses from my different rigs. Some end with 13, and the others 18. I can download/update at will. Next: if you are posting these messages from the PC you are currently working on, check to see if you are using a proxy server. Assuming you are using Internet Explorer, go to "Tools", "Internet Options", "Connection Settings", "Lan Settings". If the "Proxy Server" box is ticked, you are using a proxy server. Note down the IP address -something like 192.28.5.123 and port - usually 80. Then: if you not using a proxy server, open Boinc Manager and go to "Advanced", "Options". Make sure that the main check box for both "HTTP Proxy" and "SOCKS Proxy" are NOT checked. Or: if you are using a proxy server open Boinc Manager and go to "Advanced", "Options". Check the main check box for "HTTP Proxy" and enter the proxy server IP address and Port. Make sure that the main check box under "SOCKS Proxy" is NOT checked. Try download/upload again. You will get a message initially as it seems that Boinc stores one of these messages to tell you that you were last unable to connect. You should get some joy then. |

First thing, can you ping Berkeley? If you don't know how, go to your Windows "Start" button and click "Run...". In the dialog box that will come up type in "cmd" and press enter. You should get a black "dos" screen. Type in "ping boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu". You should get 4 replies if you can reach Berkeley and other messages if not. |

WIN7 update stopped CUDA
(Message 951351)
Posted 1 Dec 2009 by Mamluk Post: Not sure how useful this is, but on a related topic... A (non-Seti) server running Windows 2008 lost its TCP stack due to a similar windows update on a reboot a week or so ago. We had neglected to turn windows update off. There was no uninstall available from Microsoft for this update as Microsoft never release any buggy updates. Our only recourse in the end was a re-installation of the operating system, and everything else thereafter. I have turned of windows update on all my personal computers subsequent to this incident. |
