1) Message boards : Cafe SETI : New job for the new year and very nervous! (Message 2112272)

I've gotten some good news to share! I have a new job starting on the 9th as an engineering technician at a local electronics manufacturer for ground based telecommunications. The company is also bidding on possible future contracts that might make electronics that could be used in the space industry and in space so I am super excited about this yet very nervous. I was hired for a position that requires a Bachelors in Engineering but I don't have that... I was hired because of my background in computers. I've been building and fixing computers since 1993 but usually as a side thing but I never really cared to go into IT. The hiring manager was impressed with my resume though and took me to the lead engineer so he could talk to me about what they do and for some reason it was very easy to understand what the job is and he told the hiring manager right there in front of me that he wanted me on his team even though I don't have a Bachelors in Engineering. He told me that if I was interested in furthering my education they would help pay for me to go to school and this is a route I never thought my life would take.

So I have to just admit I am extremely nervous about going into a job where it requires such a degree because I feel like there's a lot of expectations there but I also feel like they wouldn't have hired me on the spot if they didn't think I could learn it... I just hope there's no other people in the department that get upset that they hired me without a degree and that they have one that cost exuberant amounts of money and time to procure and here I am just getting hired off the street for the same technicians position.

I just wanted to stop by and say hello to everyone as it's been a while since I have talked to everyone here... I figured that this would be a good place to talk about this as everyone here is into technology and maybe someone else here could also be an engineering technician.

I find myself listening to "We Might Be Completely Alone in the Universe Featuring Fraser Cain" on YouTube channel Event Horizon and it' s gotten me to missing the project. I was only running for a little over a year but I miss it so much. I miss the excitement of one of us possibly finding something, I miss the friendly competition of different rig's speed at crunching numbers, I miss the tech talk and just overall miss SETI@home and I especially miss seeing all those work units ready and waiting like gifts under the Christmas tree. I've tried working on different project's but I just can't get into anything else...

Do you ever think we will come back?

I hope everyone is doing well and that you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

I highly doubt NASA will ever open up JWT to us for crunching again.... I also think we will never be back to doing any work again at all.

So it'll be a year in hibernation soon and my SETI rig just sits around (usually off) and the only use it gets are when my boyfriend and myself setup a Minecraft LAN since it's Threadripper loves MC. Does anyone think that we will ever start crunching again? I keep going back and forth on selling the rig but I know if I do I'll regret it....

I hope everyone is doing good I miss talking to everyone even if it was just questions on how to get the most out of my computer lol!

Also start checking your bios and adjusting your voltages across the board.... several youtubers like JayzTwoCents (recent overclocking video on Ryzen 3000) have found stock voltages on auto to be way too high out of the box. Just a heads up...

I heard news that they were dropping all the introductory pricing they had previously announced to better compete with Nvidia Super launch prices.

They are and AMD has called Nvidia's bluff! Its completely savage to throw out fake prices then Nvidia brings out the Super cards and their pricing then AMD trolls them with the "sales" prices which are really just the regular prices LOL! I love Nvidia and AMD but this competition is like the electronics version of the muscle car wars!

Tomorrow is the big day though! I'm perfectly happy with my 2700x and 1950x but it's going to be exciting to see AMD take the lead. I never used to like AMD at all and would always steer clear of them and build Intel systems and recommend them to others but now I'm team red. I bought a laptop for college in 2011 and all Walmart had in stock was an HP ENVY with an AMD processor. Let me tell you... that laptop is still going strong to this day and is still pretty quick by todays standards.

Maybe he was an English Major which means "pretty quick" Word processing. :)

Pretty much lol

This your AMD A8-5550M? Depends on what you mean by quick.
At less than 1/4 of the performance of current high end laptops, and roughly 1/3 of the performance of current mid range laptops, i'd have to say it's not very quick at all by todays standards.

I meant its quick for doing basic tasks........ not crunching, gaming or high end work. So to me its pretty quick for what it is.

Several of the "rumor mills" were swearing up and down that we would have pre-ordering for the new Ryzen 3000 cpus available 7 days before shipping. As of this morning I haven't seen any pre-ordering available on New Egg or eBay.

Anyone seen anything?

Tom

I just thought that the 7th was launch date and that was it... I did notice that 2700x's on NewEgg are out of stock except for the 50th Anniversary Gold Edition, I find that to be very odd!

You wouldn't be able to do that many at a time without using the 2080 Ti which has enough memory for 4 tasks at a time. The differences in product stack in relation to ability to do multiple work units per card has less to do with the number of SM's but rather with the amount of memory on the card. The 1080Ti, Titan and 2080Ti have 11GB of memory whereas the lesser cards are all limited to 8GB or less.

The OpenCL SoG application has a limit of 27% of available gpu memory for Nvidia cards. Somewhere around 40-60% for ATI/AMD cards. Two concurrent tasks is about all you can manage with lesser cards.

Way to ruin my fun Keith LOL! Hahaha I'm kidding though! Yeah that 11gb of memory would be for the best but I don't have that kind of money for a 2080Ti unfortunately. So pretty much youre stuck at 2 concurrent wu per gpu with the 1660, 2060/70/80 right? They can just crunch faster than what I have right now...

GPU upgrade question... I was thinking about upgrading from my 1060 6gb at the end of the year and was wondering about some of the newer Nvidia cards. How many work units would a 1660Ti handle at one time? 3 or 4? Or would it be better to go with a 2070 with 8gb ram and run 4-5 work units on. My 1060 6gb is working very well with 2 at a time but I would love to be able to run more per card. hopefully by the end of the year some prices will come down and I can grab 2 or 3 cards to put in this Threadripper rig of mine.

Good to know these are coming. I was looking to upgrade to an RTX series. Guess i should wait a bit longer for price drops on the first generation. :)

Same here! I was looking to upgrade from my 1060 6gb to something like 2, 1660TI's or 1, 2070 and add another 2070 down the road. I think I will wait until Super launches and see how the sales are around black friday and christmas to upgrade.

Many people have ragged on the 1660TI but for us crunchers I think it would be a great card.

Since you are running the normal platform decided by the schedulers, they have sent you some of the older applications. The scheduler is still trying to determine the best app for your host. The CUDA42 and CUDA50 applications are MUCH slower than the SoG application. You are just going to have to suffer through the CUDA42 and CUDA50 tasks until the APR's for those apps are established and the SoG app wins out in the end. The only way to circumvent this scenario is to run the anonymous platform where YOU get to decide which apps to run.

Thanks Keith! I’ll let it crunch whatever they send me until it gets used to the new host haha. Someone’s gotta do it. LOL!

I figured I would just post here instead of making a new thread.

I have 3 new work units I’ve never seen before for my gpu.

Two cuda42 and one cuda50. What are these?

Quick question... how can I set the AP tasks to 1 CPU + 0.5 NVIDIA GPUs like it is for my regular sog work units. Right now AP crunch at 0.869CPUs + 1 NVIDIA GPUs, bar in mind I am now running 2 work units on my 1060 6gb

Thanks!

You could take it another notch further along by running better cpu apps via the Lunatics Installer. The stock cpu app is pretty pokey. The choice of either the SSE3 or AVX cpu app in the Lunatics Installer would get your crunching times down another 20-30% faster than the stock cpu application. The Lunatics Installer is here:

http://mikesworld.eu/download.html

Make sure you select the SoG gpu application in the configurator.

What kind of speeds are you running the TR at? It still seems slow which I allude to probably both the stock app and base clocks. You can get a lot more clocks out of the TR than the base clocks with some BIOS tuning.

I'll take a look into the Lunatics app...

I'm just running the stock clocks and I'm ok with it for now , still getting a feel for this new computer and once I know she's stable I might look into some slight cpu overclocking. I will say that the Asus 1060 6gb has been running great since I started a few months ago on Asus's overclock mode at 1962mhz.

So I am really loving the performance of this Threadripper machine! What a powerhouse of a computer! I cant imagine what AMD's new cpu's will be like...
