I'm trying to find a post or any relevent information on a registry patch to use boinc v5 series as a system service. I remember seeing it at least 2 years ago (maybe more), and had a copy of it, but lost it in a system crash.

What I'm trying to do, is run a portable version of boinc on windows. I'm going to attempt to have a portable program load the registry patch, run boinc, then remove the registry patch when I shut down boinc. Does anybody know how to find it? I must have tried 50 or more various combinations for searching the forum, but with no sucess yet. It's driving me nuts. :) Thanks for your help.

Ok, I've tried to make a new app_info.xml file using the examples provided and I've tried to use the SSE3 version, and modify it for SSE use. I have the AK V8 client and the latest Astropulse r112 SSE client. I've tried 3 times on 3 different machines. A copy of my app_info.xml is below. What am I doing wrong???

Hey Byron, thanks for the attempt. Unfortunately, that's what caused this mess in the first place. I copied an app_info.xml from this topic in this forum ( looks close to the one you posted), and did a search / replace to make it work on my machine, but I must have made a typo somewhere... Anyway, thanks for the attempt.

Richard, it was the client_state.xml that was causing the problem. For some goofy reason, it was referencing both AK_v8_win_SSE2x.exe & AK_v8_win_SSE2.exe. Don't know what happened, but it appears to be resolved now. Thank you very much. Peace...

Where would someone look for info on how to modify the app_info.xml file. I saw the recent post concerning modifying it for Astropulse, but I wanted to try to use the same one for 3 different systems (one is a SSE machine, one is a SSE2 machine, and the third is a SSE3 machine). I know I've seen it before, but I've always used someone else's before (made by someone more intelligent than myself). I'm hoping that if I learn the correct syntax, it'll make more sense to me. Right now it just looks like a bunch of words with no rhyme or reason. I did do a search of the forums, but got buried with posts with app_info.xml files on only one machine. I'm looking for a how-to as well as a why a given line is in the app_info.xml file in the first place. I am comfortable with notepad. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I've been running Comodo for a while now (6 months or so). Overall, I'm very pleased with it. For the most part, it's very easy to configure. It does have a few quirks, and it doesn't have an import/export feature (although the newest beta does), but the new version due in a few months *should* be really good. I like it much better than the Zonealarm I was running before. I hope it works well for you. If you have any questions configuring it, the users in their forum are top notch. :) Peace...

O boy... CPDN looks like its going to be crunching for a loooong time. It's only got a 20% share, but it says it's going to take something like 1945 hours to complete. Yikes! So seti won't download until CPDN is done? Bummer, I guess I should have been paying more attention, heh?

I have 1 particular computer that appears to net be downloading any work from Seti. It was running Chicken's optimized client, but while I'm trying to track this problem, I've reverted back to the original. I've also tried reseting the project, but to no avail. I'm running windows firewall and boinc is already on the exceptions list. After my last reset this is the message log I got.

Hopefully this displayed right, but if not the L2 cache is 1024K bytes, not 2048 Kbytes. I'll post my other CPU's in a couple of days. Peace...

Please disregard this. I got lucky. I tried to re-install v5.4.9 again and it picked up where it left off, thankfully.

I have an unusual boinc error (at least I've never heard of it). Does anyone know exactly what causes the folloe=wing error: "Internal Error 2753 boincmgr.exe" without the quotes. I tried to update boinc to v5.4.11 from 5.4.9 and none of my accounts showed up. Then I tried to install 5.4.9 back onto my machine and got this error. I always install asa windows service. The particular computer in question is this one. Anyone have any ideas? I'm at a loss.

Edit
I just went and checked the boinc directory. Boincmgr.exe is missing. Should I try to re-install ver. 5.4.9 again?

Yep, that is correct. You can start a wu on one computer, then finish it on another computer, as long as the whole directory stucture is preserved, like with your USB drive. Your good to go... :-)

So you other guys are basicly saying i can put a unit on hold on one computer and continue it on another and it will still give credit properly? (I know its very posable the current WU being used would reset to 0% and start over but i dont have any complaints on that)

Ya, I've been doing this for quite a while now. My computer at home doesn't have i-net access. I don't have a phone line, so I backup to USB drive and bring it to work to submit wu's & get more. Like said before, it is a pain, but far cheaper than fixing the wiring in my house. <BIG EVIL GRIN>

To anyone wanting the Visual C++ Toolkit 2003 (The free command line version from Microsoft), I didn't see it on their web site anymore. Instead they are pointing to their Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition (also free). That is located at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/]http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/. I believe the Visual C++ Toolkit 2003 also had some sort of conflict also. If anyone still wants it however, I will try to locate it on my backup cds. I may have thrown it though. :( If I find it, I'll probably have to give it to someone elso to host as my i-net connection is at work. I doubt my boss would appreciate it. <BIG EVIL GRIN>

No, because I don't have a free 2003 version (and the 2005 express version croaks on some not-so-clean syntax somewhere, I forget).

Someone mentioned a free GUI-less 2003 version that's around - since the command-line options are in Visual Studio, I'm pretty sure that could be used to build.

For anyone interested in having Microsoft licenses available for personal use, you should really check out Microsoft certification...hint hint. Stop pirating, start getting free stuff from MS! Exams are much less expensive than licenses, but licenses are included when you take exams. Edumacate yourself ;o)

Regards,
Simon.

Peter, sorry for getting back to you late. It worked like a charm. I knew it had to be something simple. Thank you... :)

Ok, now what did I do??? Is it just because I have the Seti Beta project on this machine? (with no work) Here is the blasted error.

I must have come down with a case of stupid, because I just can't seem to get it. I let both Seti & Seti Beta run out of their wu's, shut down boinc, went to Seti's directory, copied both the app_info.xml and the optimized client there, and started up boinc again. No joy. :(
