I suppose now we have to toss all of the ATI cards into the mix.

What is everyone's guess on whether ATI or NVIDIA cards are faster per dollar?

Why is it that we can't just buy a NVIDIA card? We have to get a PNY or an ASUS or a BNH Tech... WHY?!

I want do decide what card to get, by deciding which will get me more bang for my buck.

When I am looking at NVIDIA's specs, which value is most directly related to how fast it can deal with a WU?

If it can deal with two at once, I will take the time it takes for it to do a single WU on one "core", and divide that by two. Then I will take the overall "Speed" and compare that to dollar amounts.

I'll get to work on a proposal to email to the principal to hand to the Co-op tomorrow....

I'm just so addicted to the RAC, you know? I'm already plotting out how much work I'll have to do to get enough money to buy some GTX 260's.

Lol, mom said she'd pay my a dollar for every web sale through her candle website... but I can't get the paypal to work.

Anyway, I'll pass the proposal by you guys first in case I miss anything or put anything wrong.

(about that article... I was actually thinking about showing that to them)

I actually don't get to see them, but I'm quite sure that if I handed my school principal a stack of paperwork, she could get them over there.

The dude who is in charge loves the idea, she passed it on to the person who is in charge of the computers, and he loves it. Now he needs to pass it on to a board of directors or whatever.

So I need to impress them.

Why deny the GPU work? If SETI wants to shove work onto your card, let it!

Or would that cause problems if there is a lack of application for CAL?

Oh, crap, didn't see that one.

Never mind.

But is there any good way of, in one sentence, explaining what we do and how it won't slow the machine, and how it is 100% safe? They think that this will wear down the computer faster (computers are solid state, with the exception of the HDD)

Got the no from the school.... so far. Appearantly there is paperwork to submit, boards to approve, and by the time it gets up there, the explanation will be mangled so much that SETI will sould like a very bad thing.

So do I:

1. Obey and wait for the inevitable "No"?

2. Be evil and sneak it on a few of the more powerful computers? Muhaha.

Opinions?

Lol..

We are kicking the living shit out of roadrunner.

Which is really a kick in the pants for the government, considering how much they spent, when they can have Obama come up, say only the word BOINC and walk off stage, and then everyone on the country downloads it. But Roadrunner is probably being used for top secret things that they don't want passed to civilian computers.

But it does really show that BOINC allows us to all come together to create a virtual supercomputer and on a VERY tight budget.

And if even a 10% of the 1 billion+ computers in the US signed into SETI, 100 million holy crap we could get stuff done. We could then set a totally ridiculous resolution and still run out of work!

In the preferences, there should be a checkbox saying "While Computer is in use". Uncheck that, and if keyboard/mouse activity is detected within the last 3 minutes, BOINC will not do work.

Erm..

1. A lot of channels appear to end in error. Why?

2. What kind of errors are we talking here?

3. Are they enough to futz with the project?

4. What can we do to minimize these errors?

5. Can we just try splitting the bad channels again?

6. How many WUs in a channel?

7. How many Hertz in a channel?

8. How would BOINC deal with a host that CONSTANTLY needs WUs? A computer that deals with so many, so fast, that it ends up going through multiple WUs a minute (on average, some minutes might have 30 completions, and sometimes going 10 minutes without a single completion)

9. Would it be possible for one host to hit up the server so often as it suck up all of the units?

10. If a CPU (core) was able to ram through more than 100 WUs in a 24 hour period, would the limit eventually be raised/lifted on that computer?

11. How does that server deal with hosts that constantly drop WUs? Does it lower their priority in the scheduler?

12. Will the server deny a request from 1 very large host in order to be able to satisfy 100 requests from small hosts?

13. What would we do if Arecibo went away?

14. We only collect data if Arecibo is turned on. What if we see ET when it's off?

15. How often does Arecibo look over the same spot in the sky?

16. How would we confirm a signal?

17. How many possible ET signals (that were not tossed out in automated checks) have we gotten so far?

18. What does the server do with a host that constantly returns bad results?

19. Would the user be alerted if one of their hosts found a possible ET signal that was not tossed out in automated checks?

20. How close are we to the fiber link?

21. If we got the fiber link, would the current hardware be able to handle the amount of requests that would actually reach them?

22. How long would it take before we would need something wider than fiber?

23. What if a possible signal lied on the border between WUs, in time, or in frequency?

I think some of this might be because tasks keep restarting.... I'm not sure if anybody else keeps having tasks resetting (even BOINC suggested restarting the project) but idk what to do.
