Hey Vipin, quick off topic question, what prompted you to switch from Zorin OS to Mint? You mentioned that you thought it was easy to handle, are there big differences between them? I tried Redhat in the late 90's and again in the mid 2000's, but it never really clicked with me. I saw Zorin (I think it was version 6 a few years back and donated so I could get the full version. The big thing for me was that it has the traditional Win XP Classic (95?) interface available, which I know and to this day am still most comfortable using, and installed it on a backup machine to play with. Life got busy, and I never really used it much, tried running BOINC on it, seemed to work fine, but then it fell off the plate. Anything you can say about it, and Mint now as well? Thanks!

Even though I have been using Linux for quite some time now, I still consider myself a rookie. After having tried both Zorin and Mint, I feel that the interface of the latter, especially the Mate version is more user friendly. The menu is almost identical to what you would find on a windows machine and so are most of the applications and settings, or the control panel like setup so to speak. Although identical in their core operations, I felt that Zorin required more user input compared to Mint and thats what made me settle for the Mint Mate. I am yet to try the Cinnamon flavor but from the screen shots and reviews, it is kinda similar.

Previously I have tried Redhat and Fedora, but both of these I feel are for Linux Gurus. Also, installation process for Redhat is way to complex for me.

I have been trying out various versions of Linux recently and found Linux Mint to be quite easy to handle. I have a laptop which is running BOINC on Zorin OS. I now want to transfer this to a Linux Mint installation and not sure how to proceed. With windows its just a matter of copying the two BOINC folders in program files and program data, is there any such process available in Linux? I tried searching the forum but it came up blank.

Thanks for the links Troy. I had been pondering over the idea of installing the AC fans and got my hands on two spare fans that were purchased for chiller DDC panels, however, lack of time and in view of most of the comments here, I decided against it. Instead I found Sunon PMD1212PTB1-A.(2).F.GN on ebay for around $12 and ordered 4 of them. Test result was satisfactory and its a bit louder than I want. The next step was to purchase the NZXT Sentry Mesh to regulate the speed. At around 60% setting the fans are inaudible, and I can ramp them up as needed. Bgear 120mm fan filters were added as a dust control measure.

For my GPU fans, I found replacement parts on aliexpress and ordered them for both the GTX 660 and GTX 650ti. The one for 650ti arrived last week and it was a quick replacement. The other should be in my hands next week.

Apologies for kinda hijacking this thread, but are there any new optimized apps in the pipeline? An installer with newer AP7 codes would be helpful too.

For low end cards, 1x, 4x or 8x might be ok

I've used a 1x before with a gtx 750, but when I tried with higher end card it wouldn't work.

I tired a 16x as well with high end card, but it too wouldn't work as well.

Don't know if it has something to do with requirements of the higher end cards.

You might get a different result. I ended up opting for a new MoBo

I just went for the higher end boards, I've got 4 so far, 3 have cases, the 4th doesn't yet, but it will, an X9 for 4 and 5, 1 each of course.

Again, thanks for the tips.

Only my main rig is in a case, the rest are all open bare bone system, subjected to direct flow from the AC outlet. Helps keep them cool in this desert environment.

Thanks for the info. I was worried that these flimsy looking ones might cause trouble with the mobo/GPU.

I won't go with any PCIe 1x riser with high end cards

I have read on many sites that 1x, 4x or 8x work as good as 16x slots when it comes to computing, so I am a bit confused here.

What sort of GPU will you be using with the riser? Some cards will not work with certain risers, other will. So knowing what the GPU cards is first helps

I wasn't aware of that. I am planning to get a couple of R9 290/X. I found 3M 8KC3-0726-0500 cables but they are extremely pricey compared to what Amazon has.

Can anyone recommend a good quality pci-e riser card. I have checked on Amazon and most of them have negative comments. So not sure which ones to buy without the fear of wrecking the mobo and GPU.

Vipin,

Did you check eBay?

Thats neat, thanks a lot. I never used ebay before but must give it a try now.

Thanks for all the tips. I tried peeling off the sticker and oiling the stuck fan on my GPU and it now rotates intermittently. I guess a few more tries will free it up.

I have never heard of washing the DC fans, but maybe I will give it a try if the lubricating method doesn't work.

However, with GTX660, I will still need a new set of fans as one of the blades is completely broken now and the imbalance creates a too much vibration at high speeds. I could not find the same type replacement on the net, and the entire setup has to be two slot wide.

My case has a total of 6 fans and the combined whine is a bit too much especially at night. All of them came with the case and their data specs put them on an average of 51dB. I work with case fans used on electrical DBs, which while pushing more air are much quieter at around 39dB. Hence the thought of replacing the 12V DC with these ones. I will not be changing the CPU radiator fans rated at 110cfm. So the new fans need to be in similar range so as not to create pressure difference inside the case.

Quite a few 120x120x25 230vAC fans with <100m3/h
First one I came across - Sunon SP101AT-1122HSL.GN flow of ~136m3/h

As for you GPU fans - what diameter and depth can you get away with?

Thanks, however, 1122HSL.GN is rated at 78cfm. As for the GPU fans, I haven't measured the dimensions. The current thickness is two slot wide, and hence the same is required, else it will touch the PSU. Diameter wise, it should lie within the edges of the GPU itself.

Would anyone have information about 120x120x25 mm case fans running on 240V AC, with atleast 100cfm airflow? The best I found at 25mm thickness was rated at 80cfm. I found many at 38mm thickness, which due to space restriction in my case, cannot be used. I plan to replace my 12V DC fans which are only 35cfm. DC fans at higher cfm are too loud.

Also, due to my own dumbness, I managed to break the fan fins on my Asus GTX 660, and one of the fans on my Gigabyte GTX 650Ti is jammed. Any suggestions for replacement fans which will stay within two slot widths?

I am a hardcore seti cruncher, but I had joined Einstein to coverup outages. My RAC in Eintein used to be around 1000-2000, but now it has shot up to 90000. Hope Seti gets back online soon.

Unfortunately with all the power available via GPUs, cracking longer, full sentence passwords are a fairly trivial affair: http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/08/thereisnofatebutwhatwemake-turbo-charged-cracking-comes-to-long-passwords/, http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/03/how-i-became-a-password-cracker/, and http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/05/how-crackers-make-minced-meat-out-of-your-passwords/ show details on how just about anyone can do it these days.

Increasingly password vaulting software such as KeePass that will randomly generate difficult to crack passwords will also save them for you. The downside is that if you're using complete hard drive encryption and require a password at boot time (like my company does), having a software-based password vaulting software won't help much.

All I can suggest is Password Generator and Password Meter.
