21) Message boards : Number crunching : GPU downclocks itself (Message 1117195)

I just had an issue with this too although i run no screensaver.. The 560 Ti down clocked to like 56Mhz according to GPU-Z then would only come back up to 400MHz which is the idle speed of the 460 when it loaded back up. Turns out it was an issue with E-VGA Precision trying to sync the non-identical cards.

I also had this problem. When you have a multi user machine you have to install BOINC as a service or it drops into GPU emulation mode when you switch away from the primary user (The one logged in when boinc started up or was installed). Normally that doesn't error out, just takes way longer, but with the optimized apps it might error out.

Not sure if the current version allows installation as as service or not, it's been awhile since i had a multi user machine.

Yah, assuming my C2Q keeps working I'd like to hold off until the 6 core 2011s come out, but having just replaced a blown power supply (with a 1200 Watt Corsair) I find myself thinking it's upgrade time to something that can take more than 2 GPUs.

I do wonder what the launch price on an X68??? MB and Processor will be though.

Is it worth it to pay the extra $100 for the 2600K over the 2500K? For SETI and for general game use?

I'm looking at building a new machine since my old one has been having trouble lately and debating between these. Might hold off and wait for the LGA 2011s though too.

He wants them for gaming too. You can't SLI 3 460s so the 2 570s is still a better option IMHO.

read this, especially the power consumption, folding and temperature sections.

It's not a little less power, it's like 100 Watts per card at load.

Definately 570s...better power consumption, run cooler and just as fast or faster than the 480s.

Prices where you are must suck though. I can get 1 gig GTX 460s for $150 Canadian now, while 560s are $230

I've also had an LCD "burn-in" from displaying Standard Def non-widescreen video for a long time it got vertical bars at the edges. After a couple weeks of displaying dynamic video they went away.

I've had mixed cards for 3 years...The inability to run 2 units on the 460 is an annoyance, but they do work.

I'm thinking of upgrading it to a 560 and 460.

Running the 9800 as display driver doesn't work for me, this is not a dedicated crunch rig, it is my general use (gaming, coding, piracy) box and Crysis 2 just doesn't run that well on a 9800GT.

Yup, a stuck usenet service process. GPU load was running at 3%..., must have been taking all the CPU cores cycles up so it couldn't feed the gpus.

So, I've been getting some GPU units (CUDA) that are taking 3 - 12 hours....Reschedule is not detecting them as VLARS so I'm wondering if this is something new or my GPUs are just doing a bad job

If I had $1200 to spend personally I would probably buy one of those new Samsung 3 across displays....not at all for crunching.

I would buy this:

Antec 600 Case $100
Antec Quattro 1000Watt PS $170
Asus P8P67 Pro $190
Corsair DDR3 1600 4GB $60
Intel Core 17 2500K $220
Western Digital Black 1TB hard drive $90
GTX 570 $350
Corsair H50 CPU Cooler $80
DVD burner $20

If you need to add on a Windows OS you are looking at $120 - $180 for an OEM copy.

That puts me at $1280 and gives you power supply room for at least one more big graphics card (That board can only take 2 at 8X)...my prices are Canadian though if you check US retailers you might be able to go to a Gigabyte UD7 instead for mainboard, then you can get triple cards later on later on.

This system allows for some upgrade ability (adding GPUs) and should be a decent gamer too if you ever want to use it for that.

if he's putting a Q6700 on it there is no point in going higher than the DDR2 1066 he already has anyways. Native speed with no OC was DDR2 667 so a 20% overclock only needs DDR2-800, not really much point in moving it up and away from native ratio.

An old GPU comparison we were working on before all the server trouble. The second link contains teh chart, but the thread has a bunch of info in it.

Kind of gave up when the servers were buggered up.

a 9500 GT should do about 2500 RAC and a GTS 450 should do about 8500 RAC based merely on SPs and clock speed. The 450 never existed when we built this and 9500 had no results.

My 460 was running as high as 14,000 RAC alone for a while beating my 280 by about 2000, but it had a fair overclock. Where it is now I'm guessing it should make 12,000.

This is all running single WUs since it is combined with a 9800GT.

Asus Maximus formula was the best board for DDR2, but it is Crossfire only, I think your Striker was SLI only. Can't get either of them new anymore so hmmm.

If you need the SLI you are stuck with the Asus P5N-T which is not cheap and is reviewed pretty poorly.

If you are okay with only 1 PCI Express then you can pick up a micro-ATX P5QPL-AM for about $60, an MSI G31TM-P211 for about $50 or a gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L for around $90. All decent boards, but will not perform as well as an X38 or X48 did.

Back in September we were trying to rank the GPUs and gathered results together. The GT240 was giving around 8500 RAC for a single card with about 70W of total draw. I'm not sure I trust the TDP given, but I did go through the WUs and that number looked accurate. Might try this again, but I've been pretty much down for a month or so...and soon we'll have Radeons on MB.

Some of the Nvidia cards run far too hot, but the ATIs seem to be able to keep themselves cooler. My 3870 has been full bore for 2 years and is still going strong as long as i clean it once in a while. My GTX 280 blew after 10 months even kept clean (They are a pain to take apart for a proper cleaning)

Take a look in catalyst at what the temps are running at. If they are in the 70s you are probably fine, much higher and the card will be "wearing out" faster.

Better yet install Rivatuner and set up a custom fan speed profile....(Is there a Mac version????)
