If you take a peek at Bernie Vine's machines he is running a GTX1660ti on one of them under windows which would give you an idea of he relative performance with that OS

It is currently running tasks around 6mins 20sec average. Compared with the GTX 970 on an older AMD CPU which is around 10mins 30secs average and the GTX 1060 on a newer AMD Ryzen 3 2200G which is around 9mins 50secs

Both the machines with the 970 and 1060 are dedicated crunchers that mostly do nothing else 24/7, however the GTX 1660ti is in my daily driver and is in use for gaming and watching videos for several hours a day and then Boinc is suspended, however it still has the highest RAC.

I am considering getting another 1660ti to put in the Ryzen box, move the 1060 to the older AMD box and retire the 970 which has done sterling work for several years.

That's the approach I posted earlier that I think the project should take. Just take the project down and fix the servers properly and take as long as needed. I can't handle the constant band-aid up and down lately.

Looks like my PC survived the night and managed to keep enough work in the cache. When I went to bed the cache was very low and I was half expecting my backup project to kick in, but in the end it didn't.

Looks like disabling the GPU process has done the trick! RAC has been rising sharply since.

Once again the iGPU has proven to be a loser. I wonder why the project even has it as an option.

In the case of Mark, many people only saw the man up front, not the man inside. Yes he'd regularly go on public 6 &12 hour timeouts every w/e, but how many saw him on a Wednesday over in number crunching gladly helping out a newbie with a technical problem, or running a fund raiser. Many people only use the cafe and never got the whole picture.

Does anybody have a suggestion for a good cleaner for sterling silverware? Of course I know about the product, "Tarn-X", but it doesn't really do as good a job as I would like. Some of the silver sits inside a special cloth bag and that keeps the tarnish away, but the basic forks, knives, and spoons, I use everyday, and they need some spiffing up.

Have you considered the cost of power? For machines turned on more than a small fraction of a year, the power cost disadvantage of machines of that era is so bad that even when they are free it is cheaper to turn them off and spend part of the money that would have been spent to power them to buy modern hardware with equal or greater compute power and far lower power consumption.

Seriously, unless power is somehow free to you, and you don't care about the person or entity who is paying for it, this might not be wise even if you can work out how to do it.

Electric cars? Has anybody done the math on electric cars? It's still physically impossible to store enough electricity in a light enough batter to get 300 to 400 miles between charges. And you still can't charge that kind of storage battery fast enough to equate the time it takes to fill up at the gas station.

Tesla Roadster. 245 miles per charge. And it is a sports car. Getting close to your 300 to 400 mile range. A full charge takes somewhat less than an hour.

The Tesla Model S (a family sedan) has a 300 mile range (maximum), with a 45 minute empty to full charge cycle.

Now. these two models are somewhat pricy. However, given economies of scale, the price should drop... a LOT.

I understand that once you open the gates after your Tuesday - Thursday maintenance we have a backlog of sending and recieving tasks, but this is Friday night at 6:22pm ( Arizona time) and my computers still can't connect. Is there some way to open the gates durning your maintence time to at least collect some information? I have over 500 WU waiting to send now and still can't connect to a server.

Also understand the bandwidth required to do this, maybe you could talk to Bill Gates and AT&T to give you more :-)

... unfortunately, AP WUs are a bit thin on the ground... The last time I saw one, was back when I was running a 3.2GHz P4; needless to say, I aborted that one, as I'd calculated that I'd never finish it before the deadline.

The initial estimate for AP work can be quite high, but with the Lunatics r409 app my 1.6GHz P4 does them in under 4 days, my 1.4GHz Pentium-M in under 2 days. Just noting that to avoid discouraging those with modest systems.

Absolutely. Why does being able to buy a bigger computer make you more upset than the rest of us? We are here to help with the science, when our help is needed. Why would anybody be upset if the science needs to catch up to the crunching? S@H has clearly been running right on the ragged edge of their resources (money, hardware, and human) lately. If the resources remain fixed, they will have to adjust to reflect that reality.

I have GPU tasks on Rig on a Bench estimated at 60 hours infact they take 10 mins, also a couple of AP tasks esimated at 400 hours completed in 12 hours.
Where's the logic in that, as a consequence the rig is not calling for new jobs and will run out before it gets any.

Taken to its extreme, if no one bought BP at all, not wholesalers or re-sellers or consumers of gasoline and other oil products, then BP's income would dry up and as a publicly owned company they would have to make some hard decisions about what to do to with their assets. At some point the company would have to declare bankrupcy, sell off their assets and shut down. If that happened, who would be responsible for the clean-up and compensation to individuals and businesses affected by this spill?

That's why we have bankruptcy courts. BP's creditors under legislation or regulatory fines or resulting from civil negligence move to the head of the list when it comes time to carve up the corpse.

A major, messy bankruptcy, with the traditional creditors like banks and major suppliers looking on helplessly as BP is cut up and fed to the masses, might be what we need to wake up the rest of the oil industry.

In any event, if we believe the BP CEO's public statements, thay have money in the bank right now to cover the cleanup costs. It would still be there if BP went bankrupt today. We just need to make sure the money is used for that, and not spirited away to the shareholders while nobody is watching.

You have left out some important facts, obviously because if you acknowledge the full history of the region it would show you to be the biased fool that you are. Israel was formed by international consensus after World War II and for more than 5 decades it has been attacked by its neighbors. But that is irrelevant to the situation at hand. This blockade is meant to prevent the murder of Israeli citizens by illegal rocket attacks fired from Gaza. Israel has the right to defend itself, no matter how irrational your sympathies toward the Hamas terrorists.

As an outside observer I have to say, that both ES99 and Quigon have both spoken quite eloquently from their respective viewpoints, and are clearly two thinking and intelligent individuals. ES99 is coming from a practical scientific viewpoint, and Quigon from more of a spiritual viewpoint.

But doesn't it all boil down at the end of the day, to what each individual person WANTS or NEEDS to believe?

Nobody can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is a god, or indeed that there isn't one. It's really up to each one of us to decide what we think about it for ourselves. Having done that, I really see little point in trying to change other peoples decisions or opinions.

I find the situation of the American Evangelists who make a financial business out of it quite bizarre! You had to admire Billy Graham for his ferventness, but the others ....

I wish I could view it with your equanimity, however I think belief in god causes too many problems and is often used as a way to control people. God is something the human race really needs to grow out of before we can become more responsible for ourselves and the world we live in.

Unfortunately too many religious people try to force their world view on others, that is the nature of the god meme and the reason such a ludicrous idea has survived for so long.

Yes, many terrible things have been done--and are still being done--in the name of religion, but it does not follow that God is at fault, or that those evil acts are a proof God does not exist. Many politicians do terrible things, even in democracies, but that does not mean that democracy is at fault or that the concept itself should be rejected.

I believe that when people do bad things or incite others to do bad things in the name of religion, they are aware their actions are wrong, but for selfish reasons they continue; just as corrupt politicians know they are doing wrong, but continue anyway. To lay the blame on the "system" (looking for a broad neutral term here) instead of the individual is unsupportable. Jesus never said, "Go on a crusade to rout Moslems from the Holy land"; and Mohammed never said, "Fly a plane into the World Trade Center"; both of which resulted in the undeserved deaths of victims. It was people doing bad things in their own self interest who are to blame.

Was stopped in town recently by a single mother (3 kids), who went to school with my youngest son, she was wondering how he was getting on.
We talked for a while and apparently she is a statistical model for a university study. The university has told her that her equivalent income is equal to the national average. She has never worked or gone into education or training since she left school.

New Labour just followed Thatcher's policies...which is why Britain is in the total mess it's in today.
