Early rising for me as well.

Not sure I am really here, though?

You were here for 14 hours. Is that a record?

GoodMorningAfternoonNight...I am on vacation and have not seen any of you lately...I have avoided the on-line world for the past few days...just waking and dreaming...What have you been up to?

Working. Trying to survive another 2 days then the holiday is here.

..also trying to figure out what's up with Boinc and why it's not been crunching like it used to. My RACs have dropped all across the projects.

Another thought...........

I know that the Project Admins are busy & short handed.

However, is it possible for them to produce a quarterly newsletter(web page) showing the following: -

Donations to date & what the funds have been allocated to?
Project personnel - Their thoughts, ideas & which ones have borne fruit, also possibly, the ones that failed & as to why?

I believe that they have had to spend a considerable time to apply for grants etc.

This newsletter would only have to be produced 4 times a year, which should not take up to much time.

It would give countless users a place to see what is being done & how, as well as showing a more human face to the project. This I feel, would take a lot of strain off the project as well as the forum.

Thats a good idea, I wonder if this would be something that the admin folks could use in the Help Wanted threads, and see if someone wants to do the work on it for them, so they can focus on keeping the project running.

They could also put whatever they wanted on it to keep the crunchers posted. What I suggested was just an idea. Unfortunately, even though I have built my own network & server, at the moment, I am quite clueless about setting up web pages. With close to 5tb on my server, I would be only too happy to host it, if somebody put it all together.

Setting up web pages is easy. If you want anything done in flat HTML I can do it for you.

Kinda like the Seti admins, eh?

Yup..I am extremely aware of just how generous the boinc community can be when you ask nicely. ;)

Nor I...LOL.....and I have surely proven otherwise on at least one occasion....
I am a timid soul most of the times......but don't get my dander up.....LOL.
We all have a bad day now and again.......
Let this change work it's way out.....I have offered to give up my mod tag willingly under this change....it does not diminish me nor my credibility as far as I am concerned, any more than I thought the mod tag gave me greater credibility......maybe more responsibility, but it made me no better than anybody else......and if the truth be told, I used the powers granted to me very seldom......

Which is as it should be.

We shall see how things pan out...and I will even see if I can get crunching again on my old account and maybe even try to optimise this hunk of junk.. I keep this computer running on willpower and charity at the moment.

So be on your best behaviour if you want to avoid being singled out........

Would you care to expand upon that last point you made ?

I don't think it needs much clarification......
If someone is misbehaving in the learning stages of some of the newbies, they will no doubt tag that person as someone to keep an eye on.......
So be on your best behaviour.....

hmmm..and there was me thinking that something was finally going to be done about bias mods who abuse their position to victimise people they don't like for personal reasons.

I guess I am outta here if nothing is going to actually change but the names.

Won't know till the curtain rises.
Stick around.....see what shakes out.

I will not be the same old schtick, I am certain of that....

I only meant to say that if a few lurking in the background think that this change will give them carte blanch to behave badly, it ain't gonna happen...trust me on this.....

You have nothing to worry about if your recent demeanor holds up....

My demeanour has always been the same Mark...however...even a saint would lose their temper if they had to put up with what i have...and I never pretended to be a saint.

LOL....no.....I only come out from under the bed to check on the crunchers and feed the kitties......

A water bed and cats? You're braver than I thought.

Wow, 9 hours and no posts. Gee, this place is dead.

Hold onto your hat! :]]

Big changes have just started in Cafe Seti, and you'll be seeing a lot more people in here than you have for quite a while, Jeremy.

Hopefully they all behave as gentlemen and ladies.......LOL.

I'm optimistic. :]] We've all gotten to understand each other better over the last year and a half, I think.

One can only hope........
I'm one of those silly optimists that like to look at things through kitty-colored glasses.....

I hope that doesn't mean you spend most of your day sitting under the bed and you only come out to eat moths.

It's a thankless task and having been in his shoes I totally understand why he would want to pass the job onto someone else for a while. *remembers the relief when they outsourced the message board I was in charge of*

Ummm.....if, like Sirius suggested....they were to go with a 1 year term....then we would be completely stuck with a terrible mod for that six months.

Modding is simple, actually. Most people just can't seem to figure it out. All it takes is a bit of diplomacy, and a willingness to talk to a person who has a problem with an action you took.

When I did the job, it always amazed me how easy it was to avoid having to actually delete ( or " mod " ) much of anything. A well placed word here and there, a message to a user who may ( because of a post ) have something modded due to language or rules violation(s), was almost always all it took to have the problem corrected.

People either have the ability to do that kind of thing, or they don't.

+1

Edit: I never had any problems with the posters when I was a mod here...as long as they understood why you were having to mod them, most of them were fine about it.

I am sure the new mods will find the posters here as friendly as I did as long as they remember that little respect for people can go a long way towards making their job easier.

A great loss to science and fiction. His writing bought the two together in an exciting and accessible way..even now I use his short stories in my classes to help illustrate principles from physics to my students. I hope I can ignite their enthusiasm for the subject in the way his writing helped ignite my own.
