Posted 13 Dec 2018 by George 254 Post: Dear Juan/Keith Finally cracked the settings with processing times around 700 seconds. Previously made the mistake of selecting TOO many options. Just have the one now with SoG and it runs well. BTW does one need to select any Astropulse options to crunch those WUs quickly? |

Posted 12 Dec 2018 by George 254 Post: Dear Keith My processing times have dropped so I went back to the setup where for some reason it defaulted to the cuda 20 setting. Just to be sure let me ask about each of the setup pages: 1) AstroPulse v7...select ss3? 2) multibeam v8 SSE4.2...? 3) Astropluse v7 (CPU) SSE3 ?? 4) multibeam v8 (CPU)....?? 5) Astropulse v7 NVIDIA AP7_win_x86...?? 6) Multibeam v8 (NV - cuda) selected .....S0G_r3557 7) Astropulse v7 (Intel iGPU)...... 8) Multibeam v8 (Intel iGPU).. Bit confused as which ones to select apart from the option with .....S0G TIA George |

There is another but that is hidden under the new graphics card. I have saved these images to a folder, but seem unable to paste them into this message? I could send them as a PM mail?[/list] |

BUT I then remembered to reboot and things seem OK now. Thanks for your help and let's see what happens to crunch times |

Posted 10 Dec 2018 by George 254 Post: Dear Grant Thanks for the eGPU link which I read with interest. The units are very expensive and hardly worth it, since I buy my laptops when they are out of rental on ebay so they tend to be 4+ years old. Docking stations for my HP laptops are really cheap too <£10, unlike the Thunderbolt 3 stations. IF I really wanted to ramp up my WU processing then it would be much cheaper to get another 1050 ti for my TU - but this would presumably mean a bigger motherboard? Thanks again for your help. Regards George |

Posted 9 Dec 2018 by George 254 Post: Juan In the advanced power settings, you can set the Max power for the CPU. It is interesting to see how the power consumption drops as you gradually reduce the maximum % CPU setting. As an example, my laptops tend to run 20-30w @ 100%. But reducing the %CPU to 80, 85 or 90% can reduce the power consumptionby about a third. I also put rubber feet or have a workstation/dock for my HP laptops which improves cooling. I look forward to tuning the GPU with the new SW you mention. Regards George |

Posted 8 Dec 2018 by George 254 Post: Will do Juan but will have to wait for my adapter to arrive so I can use my monitor. BTW you may have seen earlier comments that my TU is "headless" i.e. I only use it for crunching WUs. What hardware please would I need to install to turn it into a normal PC where it would be my main machine and SETI would be running in the background? Thanks for your feedback. |

Posted 8 Dec 2018 by George 254 Post: Hi I bought the above laptop off eBay as it was cheap and as usual stuck extra RAM in it. It runs 24/7 and crunches WUs in 6,000 - 7,000 seconds but it has no graphics card. Is it possible to add one to speed up the WU processing? TIA George |

Posted 8 Dec 2018 by George 254 Post: Dear Juan and everyone My MSI GEFORCE GTX 1050ti arrived and I have installed it. Interestingly, the box had addresses on it, there was an instruction sheet inlike the fake one. I did use the driver I had previously loaded onto a CD and rebooted and heigh ho, I have a GPU card on my machine 8023146. Managed to do this without a monitor as the new card does not have a VGA output socket, but never mind, I have ordered an adapter. Looking at the outputs just now, two WUs have been crunched at about 1600-1700 seconds each or say 27 minutes. The AP one took 16,000 seconds though? Thank you all again for your advice. I have another query about my laptop 8367602 for which I will post a separate thread. George |

From there it looked like I did install the driver BUT there is no update yet on the BOINC manager screen. Have a horrible feeling that I may have to return it... |

Posted 2 Dec 2018 by George 254 Post: Yes the version is 337.88 - bought it off eBay a week ago £48. Have DL the driver to thumb drive, put it in the USB on the TU but GPU not registered. Then DL the driver to a spare CD which flashed for a few seconds but then the HDD indicator is not blinking? Rebooted the TU and it seems to be blinking again. Fingers crossed that this works. BTW I do not have a monitor so did not see Clean install option. |

Posted 1 Dec 2018 by George 254 Post: Dear Grant/Bernie Yesterday, I loaded the driver CD which came with the unit:TYT-11582, ver.337.88 win 7 64 (has others too but my system is 64 bit) I rebooted the TU too. Tried switching the iGPU on SETI@home settings, no difference. Then unselected all the other except the CPU, no difference. So I have a brand new GPU in my TU that does not seem to be doing anything? I have twice reloaded the CD into CD drive. It wurrs a bit and the green light flashes but the nothing? Help please. George |

Posted 30 Nov 2018 by George 254 Post: Hi I have had the NVIDIA Gaming Graphic card 1050 ti in for 3 days now. The GPU details don't show up in the GPU column though? It crunches WUs in around 4,600 seconds and the range of times taken is more more consistent than with the previous QUADRO 5000. Credits on BOINCSTAT are weirdly low though? My laptops show 8,000 to 11,000 seconds per WU. Best of all though, the electricity consumption is much less meaning that I can afford to run the TU most of the time - it acts as a good backgroud heater in my cold flat in north London in winter. If Raistmer does not want the old 5000 for testing, I will sell it on eBay. Thanks for all your help guys. George |
