In 1999, I had an arguement with a friend about what goes around comes around.
This somehow came to was there a parallel earth somewhere else in the universe.
Neither of us were into science although he believed in E.T's.
My belief was that as everything (Planet wise), is spherical the Universe must therefore be round. A big balloon type of thing in which all planets and stars are inside.
If therefore we pointed out and set off into space we would in the end come back to where we started from. No matter how many lightyears it took. The earth we left would be the same one we left but in a different space time.
Sometime later we heard of the SETI program and I decided that although man would never get past the first few planets in our lifetime, it may be possible that light and soundwaves being searched by SETI might prove me correct or then again wrong.
Between bouts of bad health and changes of Phone and internet providers I have crunched SETI and the occasional other pojects since.
How long is it going to take to get my answer do you think with the progress of computers and the additional manpower of hundreds of thousands now crunching?

I'd like to echo what others have said before. Thanks to Matt and everyone else at UCB that have worked so hard to get and keep things working. I'd also like to say thanks to those that have donated to the project. I will finally be making a small donation once I get my next paycheck.

Speaking of donations, I was looking at the donation history page and notice that only 0.34% of Seti users have donated. I know not everyone has the ability to donate for various reasons, but with 600,000+ users it's hard to not imagine what would be possible if everyone donated just $1 (if the minimum donation were dropped).

Justin

Nice sentiments, but unfortunately, not real world. There is a reason for having a minimum donation amount: it costs in both time and money to process each donation. If the minimum $ is not met, it actually hurts the project to get a donation. :-(

[edit]Darn, Demiurg beat me to it! [/edit]

I would like to say if I may be so BOLD,
Although I find donating a fantastic idea, people like myself who I assume there are many around would find the financial donation difficult but we offer our computers which do use electricity and having given quite a few thousands of hours to crunching data for Seti and other organisations since 1999, personally I think the night hours it is switched on just doing Seti projects is worth as much if not more to the project than me sending ill affordable funds and doing less work. So you can all see that WE ARE ALL DONATION GIVERS in different ways

No problem, and your host is fine and you haven't done anything wrong. It's just that 2 of the original 4 didn't send back their results in time and have expired. When one of the two new ones sent returns and matches up you'll be granted credit. You need three successful returns to form a quorum and start the granting process.

Thanks for that. Pleased it isn't my senility :)

Just having a few niggling thoughts I have done something wrong.
My Work Units were disappearing as they should but then stopped. They seem to be going again after a certain date but some February ones just hang on with Credit Pending.
The following is the end of my work unit done board:

493172987 118074610 9 Mar 2007 18:30:26 UTC 2 Apr 2007 9:22:40 UTC In Progress Unknown New --- --- ---

82838595 115614764 23 Feb 2007 14:23:24 UTC 24 Feb 2007 15:55:36 UTC Over Success Done 14,788.29 62.40 pending

Is this something to do with the 1st unit mentioned which disappeared after downloading? Or something I am doing wrong?

27) Questions and Answers : Web site : Loosing Results!! (Message 526321)

Hello Masters!!
I Have been a SETI user since Aud 2002.
I ran the old version of the tool where the results ware only incerimented after you finish a WU.
But since I started using the BOINC 4.15 (what I see in the Help>About) I have worked about 50 WUs. However, my profile now shows only 29!!
I discovered this some time back and started copying the results on to excel file. I have one such file where I have 47 results. But when I try to find more information on Result ID or Workunit ID it does not show any information.
I have now stoped the processing for Feb 27th. I want to know more on this.
Please giude me. Rohit

And the numbers will continue to go down, and up as you have more units waiting for credits, this is a database function. You are NOT losing units. There are a ton of units returned and sent out every day by Berkeley. For any database to have to remember and track and access all those indefinately is not manageable. Units that have had the credits granted and are considered "completed" by the Project are moved to a seperate database for long term storage. They are NOT deleted, can you imagine a Scientist deleting something from a Science Project? "Oh sorry that data was deleted and we can no longer prove that the Dinosaurs ever happened", YEAH RIGHT! It is just part of the very complicated World of database management for almost half a million Seti users.

I Ran Seti@home a few years ago on my windows PC and you had a running account of every work unit completed and it was easy to find where you where in the pecking order no matter how many or few you had completed.
You can only find this out now if you are in the top 9999 so new members will take years if ever to find if they are staying near the bottom of the ratings or steadily climbing.
Also, the old seti lost your work units if you changed phone providers and consequently e-mail address as you had to correspond via the set up address. I lost thousands of work units through this.
Now my health is improving and I am back to using computers again, I decided a few weeks ago to try helping Seti again by installing onto my mac-mini.
New start.... New Computer and hopefully no more Blue Screens and regular reinstallations of everything.
