Um. Just counting up the number of times I said "see" or "look" in my reply. Sorry!

Nothing wrong with that. I am too old for all this stupid political correctness.

I've self-certified my web site to the WAI Double-A Accessibility level (using various checking programs) but you are the first person I know who could give me any feedback. I would appreciate any comments, if you have the time.[/quote]

I will come back on this point.
This site is usable only if you have a decent conversion program. A voluntary organisation I work for provided me with Jaws or I wouldn't be able to do a lot online or indeed on the computer. Voice recognition is OK for giving commands but not the best for telling you what it has done.

Just been digging out some old Back-Up discs.

My old membership number was 1318329903 or have I found the wrong one. I got this from an old 1997 account.

If Big is early and small is youth, then my d.o.b. of 1944 makes my birthdate one of the smallest

If you hit "reply to this post" for one of the posts with an image, you can see what you need to type. Also see the "Use BBCode tags to format your text" link to the left of the text input box. Practice in the TESTING FOR SIGNATURES AND BBCODE thread first...

You also need to host the picture yourself online. You can open a free account with one of several firms. Look for example at the url for my image for one possiblity.[/quote]

Thanks Michael,
Won't bother though. Most forums I visit have a drag and drop system. As a blind user, it just isn't worth the hassle. On top of that my speach program eats up the CPU and so slows down my crunching.
Are there any other members on here blind or partially sighted? How do you cope?

Could anyone tell me please how the system works for W.U. completed
You give 26,826 sec's of CPU time and get 30.88 credits
You give 17,267 sec's of CPU time and get 62.43 credits

Although this might be better off posted in the number crunching forum I'll try to answer you here....

Credit is awarded based on the number of computations, also known as Floating Point Operations or FLOPS it takes to complete a given workunit. It doesn't matter how long it takes......what matters is the amount of effort that the processor had to put in to compute the result.

For example, if I ask you to perform a series of additions I can bet that you'll be able to perform them faster than a similar set of divisions on a given sample of data....

That said, different workunits have been recorded at different angle ranges by the Arecibo dish. Some angle ranges have easier computation than others....so it is often the case that the mid-range workunits take longer in time than the ones that give you 60 or more credits.

It might be worth reading the Enhanced FAQ to get an idea of the whole process.

Being blind causes me a time lag actually waiting for Jaws on my computer to read what is on screen and then going back to links etc. However I did follow your link and having listened to the explanation given it makes me no wiser. It states that you are paid for CPU time rather than the W.U. which I understand. I also understand that a work unit taking 4 hours (14,400 seconds) in real time may take much longer depending on how hard the CPU is working on other things as it only uses spare power.

It is the fact that it gives you an estimate of CPU time and credit when you download the W.U. and as most of the time it is roughly correct, these discrepancy's being so large are queryable.

Thanks again for the links as finding things like links unless I have my God-daughter here to help can sometimes be impossible to find.

Not exactly my first. Actually by the catalogue label on it, my 19th Album, bought in 1965

For the youngsters on here I have also put up the back cover as well.

Photos, Album Notes, as well as track listings. and you don't need a magnifying glass to read them/Volumes/MY DOCUMENT/S of s01.jpg/Volumes/MY DOCUMENT/S of s 02.jpg

Not sure how you clever clogs put up easily read boards. I have copied and pasted part of mine up so you can see the irregularity of the system. (If it shows up that is)

Credit was granted for all of the validate errors (and any other problem with pending credit). In some cases it might not have gotten credited to the proper host (if the host id had changed). But the users have gotten credit. If you didn't see a jump in your credit, it might be that you had already been granted credit. Most of the items listed as pending had already been granted proper credit.

I have had a couple of the following messages lately.

Tue 22 May 23:21:37 2007|SETI@home|Message from server: Completed result 16fe05ab.10775.20736.9656.3.244_3 refused: result already reported as success

1. Does this mean I will still be given credit for the hours used?
2. Why does this happen?

The best thing about these gadgets is that they are completely OS-neutral. The computer thinks it has a really slow hard-wired connection to the net. You can even use these to share a dialup line between several machines.

Told you I was just an old Fuddy Duddy. Accept my apologies for being in the wrong

Have you not considered there are still some out here using Windows 95 and at least one I know of on Windows 3.11, never mind the fact that here in the UK BT still have large tracks of the country on dial-up. What difference will an ethernet modem make to send/recieve speeds.

Now onto the disasters...

Now be Honest,
Were would you be without the disasters? The boring tedium of the machines humming, buzzing and whirring completely normally hour after hour, day after day is much more stressful, as you are always waiting for them to crash or blow. What a relief when something happens like this.
OK it is frustrating for us as we watch the W.U.'s run out and blame each other for not donating more or some cash to the cause, but if you had everything and nothing went wrong, would you be happy? :-D
The only thing more exciting for you than sorting a disaster out, will be when that Pink Man somewhere up there sends you the message to say 'He is Watching Us".
Keep up the pretence of working and 'we will believe'!

Keep up the hard work tomorrow, or is that today and I won't tell everybody that you have been having a wild Jam Session while we thought you were pulling your hair out

[quote]I totally agree, ten or twentyfive dollars is worth it just to keap our hobby alive:-)

Like Justin, just like to say thanks again to Matt and everyone at UCB for their hard work and dedication to keeping the project going, and a big thanks to SUN for coming through with a replacement server.

However, if we could have a link started on what and what isn't a donation we could really have a good time disputing the point.

My weekly income is £82 (UK) before I pay rent and any othe bills. Suggested as a minimum of $10 (to cover costs and still have something left to spend), would be about 8% of my income. For many here that it would seem, is like 0.08% or even less of their wages.

I volunteer my services and equipment. The time and use of that equipment is then a donation. When SETI, which was I believe the first company to farm out work to volunteers started, all they wanted was those volunteers. Donations were secondary. If growing changes the criteria, then surely those in power should relook at what it actually is they are after.

In many places around the message boards it is stated that this is an (addictive) hobby. How much and how many professional paid members were there in those days. It would seem as computers get bigger(in terms of crunching power) and faster then we need more manpower on the ground to work out what is actually in that data.

Another point to raise here is that in 1999 we were told we were helping in the search for that radio signal out there from Uncle/Aunty E.T. yet in the Cafe forums we are told that still isn't what is being studied. I am getting more and more confused. Could someone please tell me what we are crunching for?

Baz
P.S. You may move this message into a new Link if it is deemed beneficial to keep this as Techy News link. Thank in anticipation

I too would like to wish you all the best in the next few hours.

My cravings are getting worse. poor Rossetta must be steaming now and ready for a break from all the extra work she has had crunched for her.

So one good thing to come from this is that those who ran out of W.U's have done extra work for other sites.

Good Luck with setting up and hope it goes Hunky Dory as the shakes are getting bad now

Thanks Graeme. Made for interesting reading. Just had problems with my text reader with names and things as I need it to read for me as I am registered blind.

Bit out of my depth too but I did get the general gist of it.

Yes, it's fairly heavy going I suppose, but it's really just another take what the universe is.

Does your text reader sound like Hawkins ? If so, imagine the prank calls you could make.
Evil grin.[/quote]

Jaws has a choice of voices but they are much better than they used to be. Just takes that bit longer to get things done, especially on the internet.

If it hadn't been for the RNIB here in England helping out at times, I would be just another lost soul unable to use the ether or chat to you guys. (I ain't politically correct you gather). ;-)

Any spare cash I get goes to them as they help with the here and now. Sorry SETI. (No RNIB - No Computer - No Internet - No Number Crunching for you), you can't have it both ways off some of us.

I started a conflab on the Techy link Mr Moderator and I have donated for 7 years now what I can afford. (Don't be misled by my member date).
Donations don't have to be cash or Tax deductable it seems.

You say that everything is round. Excuse me, but egg boxes are not round - they are egg box shaped. And the universe is inside a huge party balloon? Right...

I actually said "what goes around comes around"
and yes the "party ballon" might be a bit on the small size, is it must keep getting bigger as our universe expands it now seems.
