21) Message boards : Number crunching : v8 issues on very old cruncher (Message 1772718)

I've also done some seti v7 crunching on a 586 class chip (AMD K6-2+ in my case. See thread: "Retro PC seti crunching"). Using the older .dll file, v7 worked fine. But, like your rig, mine just throws an error trying to run v8 (old .dll, new .dll, doesn't matter). I think the likely scenario is that the new v8 app is trying to use CPU instructions that just aren't present in the 586.

Completed! =)

Only about 1900 years before the K6-2+ matches what my i7/280x system has done to date!

Now, about that version 8!
23) Message boards : Number crunching : Question About RAC and v8 (Message 1771381)

Having been running the optimized apps (AVX, SSE4, and AMD HD5) on my top two crunchers for a while now, my RAC actually seems higher than it was with the optimized apps under version 7. Most notably on my 4790/R9280x box, I don't think RAC ever hit 30k before and now it hasn't dipped below that for at least a couple weeks. Granted, I do understand that AP7 units give a lot more credit than MB8. Has there been more AP7 work than usual going out lately?

So I now have the version 7 work unit making progress! I dug out a spare hard drive, installed Windows XP, copied my data folder over, and we're up and running! It must be some Windows 2000 issue not letting things run right. Estimated time to completion: 137 hrs :).

I'll revisit the version 8 issue when the time comes that I can't get any more version 7 work.

This is a follow up to a previous thread: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=78526

I definitely appreciate the help I got in the original thread. I was able to get the K6-2+ to successfully complete a work unit under Windows 7. Since then, I've ditched Windows 7 and gone with Windows 2000 SP4 (much more usable on the old system - posting from it now, in fact). I have two questions/problems.

First, I managed to get one of the remaining version 7 work units, but the progress is stuck at 0.0% even after 13+ hours of run time. I'm using the exact same app_info, executable, and dll that I did under Windows 7 (see previous thread). The elapsed time continues to run but interestingly, if I exit and restart BOINC, the time starts back at 00:00.
stderr.txt shows:
setiathome_v7 7.00 DevC++/MinGW/g++ 4.5.2
libboinc: 7.1.0

Work Unit Info:

WU true angle range is : 0.107183

I don't recall if the previous unit that processed successfully was a vlar, but I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.

Second question is if there is any way to get the version 8 app to process on the 586 architecture? I tried modifying app_info to use the version 8 app with the older dll to no avail. It outputs the following error:
<core_client_version>6.6.38</core_client_version>

My E8500 is cooled by a Noctua 92mm HSF in push/pull. My 4790 and Pentium D systems are both cooled by 120mm Noctua fans mounted to Cooler Master Hyper 212 heatsinks... the Cooler Master fans died.

I've been crunching on a HIS 280X 24/7 for well over a year now and have been pleased with the results. RAC (paired with an i7 4790) is around 27,000. The switch from MB v7 to v8 didn't seem to make much difference. I'm also using the HD5 app downloaded from Mike's World.

As the title says, I've been crunching on an EliteBook 8640W. Certainly not the fastest GPU in the world, but it has been working without any issues using the Lunatics HD5 app on Windows 10. With the latest Windows 10 update, the app is now crashing the display driver which causes the task to hang. I un-did the update and now the FirePro is happily crunching away again. Anyone else run into the same or similar issue?

With only 32mb ram, BOINC would not download seti tasks. I tried it on one of my 486's a while back. It gave some message about insufficient memory.

Does anyone know where I might find a copy of libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll? I've been searching with no luck for a few hours now.

Thank, BilBg. I honestly wasn't sure if SSE was a requirement or not. I'll sit down with it this evening and see if I can get it working!

So I recently assembled a new/old late 90's retro PC to compliment the rest of my fleet. Specs are AMD K6-2+ 550mhz, 768mb ram, 3Dfx Voodoo3. I built it primarily for DOS/98SE 3Dfx gaming, but I also have it dual booting Windows 7 and thought I would let it run a work unit or two just for fun. So far, it has failed on 3 of 3 work units with the stock s@h x86 app.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=7830684

Does anyone know if the s@h app simply requires an instruction set not present in the K6-2+? Or is there some other setting I can try to get it to work? Before failing, the BOINC estimated time to completion was approximately 40 hours :).

I'm sitting on 200+ completed tasks over 4 computers at my house that aren't able to report. Interestingly, the computers at my work and my dad's house seem to be communicating with s@h just fine.
