Hey! someone has to talk about it here...

The world’s astronomers, under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), have concluded two years of work defining the difference between “planets” and the smaller “solar system bodies” such as comets and asteroids.

If the definition is approved by the astronomers gathered 14-25 August 2006 at the IAU General Assembly in Prague, our Solar System will include 12 planets, with more to come: eight classical planets that dominate the system, three planets in a new and growing category of “plutons” – Pluto-like objects – and Ceres. Pluto remains a planet and is the prototype for the new category of “plutons.”

The draft “Planet Definition” Resolution will be discussed and refined during the General Assembly and then it (plus four other Resolutions) will be presented for voting at the 2nd session of the GA 24 August between 14:00 and 17:30 CEST.

You have just answer it ;) it's your second option.

I think it's appropiated to talk about other planets searches, like this well-known project from NASA:

In order to sense the atmosphere of another planet, you need an enormous telescope, with a view unobstructed by the Earth’s atmosphere, and some way to block the overpowering light from the planet’s star. The telescope would need to be huge, at least 30 metres across, and launched into space to get above the atmosphere. Since the cost of a single, huge telescope would be enormous, astronomers have developed a strategy where the light from several smaller telescopes could be combined. This called an interferometer.

Both NASA and ESA are working on missions to launch a squadron medium-sized observatories.

NASA’s space interferometer will be the Terrestrial Planet Finder. This would consist of 3-4 6.5+ metre telescopes to gather light. Unfortunately, the mission has been put on hold indefinitely, as part of recent NASA science cutbacks.

ESA and the European Southern Observatory have already developed a nulling interferometer as part of the Very Large Telescope array, which consists of four 8-metre telescopes and a collection of smaller telescopes. Darwin is scheduled for launch in 2015. Darwin will easily see Jupiters orbiting other stars, and should be able to pick out Earth-sized planets as well.

So, if there are an infinite number of random-universes, then even if the universes that are condusive to life are a tiny fraction of these, then there must still be an infinite number of them.

Say this is true: how did this all get started, if all universes are born from a parent universe?
Is the Cosmos (which is the word Carl Sagan liked to use instead of "multiverse") infinitely old, and will last FOREVER?

If Universes are multiplying, then I would assume the number of universes in existence is increasing, adding to infinity and expanding(?) the Cosmos; but, how can you add to an infinite number, and have an infinite size that's growing?

Mustn't there have been a beginning somewhere, or am I missing something?

No one knows the answer.

Hello Tiare,
That sounds fascinating. It sounds similar to the "Multiverse" theory, where instead of having one universe there are an infinite number of universes, like large globes floating in the void. When one 'globe' (or universe) collides with another one, there is a Big Bang and another universe is born out of the release of energy.

Hi Susan!

Yes, I think you are talking about the Bubble universe theory, which is another hypothesis from many others of the multiverse theory. Very interesting indeed ;)

Bubble theory posits an infinite number of open multiverses, each with different physical constants. These universes are farther away than even the farthest universe in our open multiverse, which is itself infinitely far from us.

This Bubble universe theory fits well with the widely accepted theory of inflation. The bubble universe concept involves creation of universes from the quantum foam of a "parent universe."

On very small scales, the foam is frothing due to energy fluctuations. These fluctuations may create tiny bubbles and wormholes. If the energy fluctuation is not very large, a tiny bubble universe may form, experience some expansion like an inflating balloon, and then contract and disappear from existence.

However, if the energy fluctuation is greater than a particular critical value, a tiny bubble universe forms from the parent universe, experiences long-term expansion, and allows matter and large-scale galactic structures to form.

Greetings!!

I think the Big Bang theory is correct. The only problem I have is how it came about. It could be that a race of advanced beings in another dimension destroyed themselves in a cataclysmic explosion....which was the very Big Bang that set off our current Universe.

I really like the idea of membrane universes, but first we need to understand what is Brane cosmology:

The central idea is that our visible, four-dimensional universe is entirely restricted to a brane inside a higher-dimensional space, called the bulk. Our brane may be one of innumerable others moving through extra dimensions.

And here is an explanation of our universe formation:

"Another new "Big Bang" model, and there are many, has been unveiled termed the "ekpyrotic (out of fire) model". According to this model, two ten-dimensional flat sheets of space-time stand parallel to each other. At some point, a random fluctuation in the space-time fabric of one of the sheets peels off a membrane that floats toward the other sheet. When the floater hits the other sheet a big bang occurs, leading to the release of energy and matter from the unfurling of space curvature, and, later, a universe of galaxies and stars".

Hi again Henri!

well I talked a little bit of my country here

It's winter here, but it's not so cold (3°C); you can´t get less than -2°C. But in summer you can easily get 35°C!!! and I don't have air conditioner, just a big fan.....uffff you can imagine the rest :(

Try to read what I said on the other link, if you have more questions, just ask me ;)

I know you can't merge two accounts, I also had 2, but I decided to conserve the one with the Seti@home classic workunits, I forgot the other one, because you can´t deleter either. Hope this help you a little bit. Greetings

More about dark energy in this -almost Power Point presentation-website ;)

And this other site from Space.com:
"Dark Energy: Astronomers Still 'Clueless' About Mystery Force Pushing Galaxies Apart"

Full Story

"I find it very worrying that you have a universe where there are three constituents, of which only one [i.e., ordinary matter] is really physically understood."

"When you teach undergraduates, and they say, 'Well, what is dark matter?' Well, nobody's really sure. 'What is dark energy?' We're even less sure. So you have to explain to a student, that 90 percent of the universe, 95 percent, is in two ingredients that nobody really understands," says Ellis. "This isn't really progress."

Thank you, the web site was made by our team member Webmaster Yoda. He does that kind of thing for a living. If you ask nice, he might let you copy it but I guess you have an idea of what you want already.

Thank you Mike, yes I already have an idea, but thanks for the offer...

I read one of your posts earlier and you thanked Fuzzy Hollynoddles for knowing something about Chile. I know Chile! Out my drive turn right and turn right again. Don't stop for 10,000 K or until I run in to a big mountain range and I'm in Chile. The morning mist will be rolling up and over the mountains until they heat up. It makes a lovely video or picture.

Hahahahahaha! that seems a complicated travel for me :)
I have always felt something especial about Australia....maybe because I have an aunt there....hmmm could be....or maybe because of those great landscapes I have seen on tv ;-)

Thank you very much Jim for the information!

I found more about planemos here and at the ESO Science Release

I was wondering where the word Planemos came from (because is not a Spanish word, but it sounds like one). And this is what I found:

"A planemo is a celestial object of planetary mass - one that is larger than an irregularly shaped asteroid, yet smaller than a nuclear reactive star."

Planemo is a contraction of planetary mass object.

Under Gibor Basri's definition a planemo would be "an object [rounded by self-gravity] that does not achieve core fusion during its lifetime", regardless of its orbit. It is deliberately contrasted with Basri's suggested definition of planet, ("a planemo that orbits a fusor")

"A new space telescope concept has been chosen by NASA to help uncover the source of dark energy; the mysterious force accelerating the expansion of the Universe. Called Destiny, or the Dark Energy Space Telescope, the orbiting observatory would detect and observe more than 3,000 supernovae over the course of 2 years.

This data will help astronomers trace back the expansion of the Universe, and calculate if the rate of acceleration has changed over time. If all goes well, it’ll launch in 2013.

About Dark Energy

The discovery of a mysterious force now known as Dark Energy was announced in 1998 by two independent teams of astronomers who were studying distant supernovae as a way to measure how the expansion rate of the Universe has changed over time. These teams (both of whom used NOAO telescopes in Chile to discover the supernovae) were surprised to discover that, rather than slowing down, as had been expected, the expansion rate of the Universe is actually speeding up as the Universe ages.

To explain this surprising phenomenon, scientists have been forced to conclude that the Universe contains not only ordinary matter and dark (invisible) matter, but also an ingredient called Dark Energy that permeates all of space and propels this expansion. Understanding the origin and properties of Dark Energy is probably the most outstanding problem in cosmology today."

Hi Henri!

I was wondering the same thing....one day I thought: "how much is Seti@home really scanning??? and it's just the Northern hemisphere. So what if they are sending us a signal, but we can't see it yet....

There is a huge project in my country called Alma, but it doesn't involve Seti@home research...how sad, isn't?

Well, I hope things can change, and create more expectation about Seti@home again....like they used to.

I really have this curiosity, maybe is a dumb question... But I know we don't see the same sky (same stars), it depends on which part of the hemisphere we live...

So what happens in Arecibo, Puerto Rico? what if they are sending us a signal we can't see???

ok, I'll stop, I prefer to wait for your answers,

Thanks.
