Posted 5 Mar 2007 by BODLEY Post: I am not sure if I have enough credits left to post here ... But, supposing I have, ... To those who are my friends here - and who have been for quite some time ... I say a fond farewell. This site has become so anodyne ... that it is like chewing thru 10 Lbs of cotton wool. It has appointed totally ludicrous moderators such as to make a mockery of all who would want to play a part here. It is very much akin to handing the keys of the madhouse to the inmates. NOTHING has changed for the good since this was done ... But if that is what the great and good in the greater scheme of things at Berkeley and Seti wants ... then they are totally at liberty to do what they will with this site. They will do it without my support - BOTH entities. It is NOT the site for me ... I have therefore, with no sadness at all, decidied to terminate my association with Seti ... and furthermore, with Berkeley ... (I have been a long-time supporter of and donor to Berkeley). That ends now. Goodbye to my friends ... to the rest ... I could not care less. |

Posted 20 Feb 2007 by BODLEY Post: I believe you when you say the temperature in Võru was -25ºC for 3 days running. I had an Estonian girlfriend when I was in university, and the first word she taught me was "rohellineh" which means green. Did the vodka freeze over? i assure you that it was bitter ... although the Vodka did not freeze ... it certainly turned into the consistency of syrup, or honey ... It took almost ages to pour ... BTW ... in Võru - where Elina comes from - 35 kilometres from the Russian border, Vodka (or anything Russian) is NOT the flavour of the day. A couple of years ago I brought a bottle of Stolichnaya and hoped to share it. They all threw it into the fireplace! and the rest of what remained in the bottle, remained untouched. The Estonians are fiecely Estonian ... and that is something for which I love them. I have never left that Country easily. Estonians are so proud of their Country and history - they speak the name of their Country with a special feeling that I have never found before. Certainly for me, coming back to UK has always been a let-down. Nobody here could ever give two consecutive damns about this god-forsaken place. That is the only thing I have in common with the people of this Island. btw ... just a silly point ... "green" is "roheline" in Estonian! Maybe an insignificant change ... but when you consider that each word in Estonian has the stress on the first syllable of each word (which gives it and other Finno-Ugric languages) its esoteric quality (and when they then speak English, this is carried over, making the whole pronunciation - to my mind - immensely attractive!) |

Just spoke to the Police ... and they said it was down to young guys from the local housing estate ... I asked the Cop if I could go out and buy me a gat to protect my property ... and he said "NO! ... and if I were of the mind to ,I could book you for even asking the question ... " !!! Now, with the Police offering such a reaction ... I ask - what sort of Society are we living in? |

Posted 19 Feb 2007 by BODLEY Post: I was away this weekend, and let me tell ya.....it was FREAKING COLD!! There were ten of us and everyone was wearing everything they had packed! I had on 3 pair of socks, 2 pair of pants, 2 t shirts, 2 sweatshirts (one hooded), a winter jacket, hat and gloves. At night, when the winds picked up, IT WAS BITTER COLD! Pawly I can agree with you 110% I just came back from Estonia - where the cold just sucked the breath outta you. I had my REAL SERIOUS winter woollies on ... and I was defeated in less than an hour. The registered temperature in Võru was -25ºC for 3 days running - and even the locals, used to the cold in Winter were almost comatose from the effects ...(I think it is all down to Global Warming caused by the hole in the Ozone Layer (remember that?) and the same effects this Planet has regularly gone through countless times over the Millennia - er, um ... way BEFORE our forefathers ever had automobiles and jet aircraft!!!!!) But Estonia was sublimely ... COLD!!!!! |

How easy is it to crack your password?
(Message 517350)
Posted 14 Feb 2007 by BODLEY Post: I just need to remember the Network password and then I have access to all the rest. I understand what you are saying. It has been some time now that I stopped having a single password for all my needs - but never have I committed those passwords to a computer file - regardless of ANY consideration. I have a little list of them written down - but accessible only to me. It is funny, though ... I have never had to refer to the list ... because I remember them all. I am certain that if I dispensed with the list ... I would immediately forget the lot!!! Murphy's law in motion!!! |

Posted 2 Feb 2007 by BODLEY Post: Hong Kong is rightfully a part of China...it was originally stolen from China by the British. They forced the Imperial Dowager Empress to cede to them as reparations for the Boxer Rebellion with a 99 year lease. BTW, everyone is welcome here, just because we may not agree, doesn't mean anything personally...my disagreement with your first post was just that. What a load of utter tosh! If you wanna pontificate, DB, please read up on your history - heed the old dictum " Sometimes it is better for one to keep silent and be thought a fool, than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt". Firstly, "Hong Kong" is and was an Island. The mainland part of the ex colony was/is called Kowloon. The British, to redress their net outflow of payments to China for tea and to force China to conduct relations like other states, invaded China, winning the First Opium War in 1841. During the war, Victoria Island was first occupied by the British, and then formally ceded from the Qing Dynasty of China in 1842 under the Treaty of Nanking. Hong Kong became a Crown Colony in 1843 with the first urban settlement in Victoria City (now called Admiralty). The Kowloon Peninsula south of Boundary Street and Stonecutter's Island was ceded to the British in perpetuity in 1860 under the Convention of Peking after China's defeat in the Second Opium War. Expansive adjacent lands to the north, known as the New Territories (including New Kowloon and Lantau Island), were then leased by Britain from China for 99 years, from 1 July 1898 to 30 June 1997. For the first 20 years there was little contact between the European and Chinese communities. The first specially-recruited Hong Kong civil servants to be taught Cantonese were recruited in 1862, markedly improving relations. If your shotgun approach to history is indicative then a lack of erudition seems to be a prerequisite for the post of moderator here. |
