Been like this all day.

It's been such a roller coaster ride the last year. UP and DOWN. Many times I get to being just short of 30,000 average per day...and sincerely hope to get there. But then the servers have issues or they continually run out of work units and my system goes dry until I'm back down into the sub-10K range. *sighs*

I've recently reached a combined total of 10,000,000. It was a bit of a goal. But once my main gaming rig (shown above) reaches that mark on it's own, I'm thinking of retiring from SETI. It's become a bit of a headache and frustration. Also... It would really help alleviate some power distribution issues I've been experiencing in my office. (Not to mention...save me some money every month. Need to start saving for a new card. LOL!) 10 million is quite a hefty number and I have been very dedicated in my efforts to remain vigilant with my servers here. Seems like a nice, round number to stop at...if I'm going to. :P

Plus... I'm still unaware of the long-term effects of using the GPU's for it. They get very hot. Backplates for the two 570's really helped disperse the temps quite a bit. But I am still concerned about running it at 70C on a constant basis. I can't help but think that it'll shorten the life of the GPU.

Otherwise... I'm not really aware of whether or not this project can really keep on like this... Although I do appreciate the obvious efforts that the staff have put forward. Please don't misunderstand. :)

Opinions anyone?

Well then... I'm happy to report that I have finally begun to take on new work units on a regular basis. In the last 24 hours, I've received more work than I have in the last two weeks.

All without any special fixes or proxies.

Whatever you guys did... Keep doing it. :)

Well this is reassuring...

For weeks now, I've been holding off on commenting; instead favoring keeping my mouth shut. I refuse to be one of those people who will complain when there is naught to be done for it.

Not to backpedal and suddenly complain vicariously here... But I actually have been quite frustrated with this whole mess of late. Getting work units has been near impossible. Watching my RAC drop has been somewhat infuriating at times. These proxy fixes have yielded only occasional results at best. Changing the proxy for one project has led to issues with other projects being able to connect, etc...

I don't usually complain. Instead I normally just get another one of the projects in my list fired up and going again to keep my machine busy. But I would rather devote my CPU time to SETI as that is what I have always done for the now 12 years that I've worked with the project.

But I'm not one to berate the staff. It must really suck being them right now. This particular situation seems particularly evasive, too. It's always one thing after another with this project for the last couple of years and I'm sure that for however infuriating it might be for some of us, it's twice as much or better for the staff.

Although I've pondered the idea of a router somewhere taking on too much traffic and choking up... I've wondered if we aren't experiencing some kind of DoS attack at times - given the situation itself AND the poor, inconsistent results we've seen in trying to utilize proxies. Just a thought.

But I would like to at least take some kind of proactive role in thanking the staff and volunteers for their efforts and their willingness to put up with the impatience and confusion in the comments.

Do you guys maybe have a spare box laying around that you could turn into a temporary router maybe? Just a suggestion... Although I'm sure it's something that's already been considered. :P

Keep us updated. Thanks in advance.

Cory

If the ETs run into just a thenth of the technical problems SETI had the last few months, we will NEVER get into contact with them!

Too bad if arecibo unfortunately listens right into their direction just during THEIR weekly outage!!

You all should hope ET DOES consider HIS part of the job - sending the signals we try to listen to - as 24/7.

Just in the unlikely case we finally get into contact, we really should send them a list of the server names we used in this project, just to prevent them from naming their spaceship, bound to visit our planet, e.g. "mork" - another crash of mork would be very poor performance, then!

Chris

You're welcome to find a new project ANY TIME, sir.

Happy trails.

Just wanted to take a moment to thank the SETI crew for their efforts. I just hit 1,000,000 and am rather happy about it. Took about a year after starting over and it's been a great way to utilize the power of my newly-built server. (A year-long benchmark; if you will.)

That said... I also want to express my extreme disappointment in people who don't seem to be able to understand that there is only so much that can be done sometimes...

For example: I see comments like THIS ONE:

The fact still remains for what ever reason's in the last 30 days user have not been able to access or use seti more than 50% of the time

That's appalling
news of whats up over a week apart
come on
That's no way to treat CONTRIBUTERS

Get over yourself.

It's NOT COOL that there are people out there who are passive-aggressively complaining about the run time of the project - as though they are owed something.

When you began contributing to this project, you should have known from the get-go that there are NO guarantees made to you. They owe you NOTHING.

Quit acting as though someone just broke a contract they had with you.

Me? I've been working with this project when I can for some time now. (Ten years now I think...) I see that they are having difficulties. SURE it's kind of irritating having work units holding on my servers. But what can you do?

I for one am NOT going to just turn my back on these poor bastards who are likely losing plenty of sleep trying to maintain things and get it all up and running again.

Yes I have turned to keeping my servers busy with other projects. Yes I've put SETI on ice for now. But only because it sure as hell can't really be helping to have their systems constantly bogged down by work requests, etc. I recognize that continually hounding the servers only places further stress on them. (Which should be obvious to anyone.)

I'll just let things get back up and running and get SETI back online once things seem to be running smoothly again. I can grab work units when they're available. I can turn them in when the servers are able to accept them.

IT IS WHAT IT IS.

If you're so malcontent with the current standing of things and you just don't seem to think that you're going to make it through the rough patches...

...FIND ANOTHER PROJECT.

My piece is said.
