1) Questions and Answers : GPU applications : ATI GPU help please (Message 1292906)

Post:
Just coming into this late and have recently installed a Radeon 4650 into my system which is a Core 2 duo on Windows XP home.
Those cores are both crunching but BOINC says I have "no useable" GPU. My preferences are set to use GPU.
Is there any way to get the Radeon 4650 GPU to run while running SETI@home (non BETA)? Or is it just not up to the job.
The system previously ran an NVidia 8300 GPU which was not a CUDA acceptable processor apparently.

Thanks for the quick response. Not sure how to interpret "The first cutoff is the quota is reduced by one for every errored out task the host returns"...so I'll just leave everything running for a few days and see what happens. There is currently nothing in the "task" listing waiting to run or running. I'll just wait.
Thanks again.

Ok...thanks mate. Then I guess I'll leave my system up and running BOINC and see if and when it will start sending me some WU's. I guess it's not been happy with me sending too many Client Errors to SETI in one day so they shut me down for awhile?

Here's something I was just told...about 14 hrs ago the system was actually told to shut off by the operator and it failed to do so and when I come by an hr or so ago the screen was displaying the Windows XP error box saying that "svchost.exe" was not responding and the system had obviously been that way all day with no attention...could that have eliminated all the WU's in the que as it continued to try each one in succession and failed something? hence and empty que now?
I have no idea as to how to change or check CPU to 100% throttle, but will run a defrag now. Guess there's no way to get anymore WU's for now.
Thanks so far.

None of my preferences have been changed since this machine first went online last spring, and current setting is still "100% of the processors" and 98% of CPU time...nothing has been altered at all in the past 8-9 months. This is a Core 2 Duo...guess you already have access to that info..lol.

I've been fairly busy lately and have not checked my system for results in a couple of weeks and to my horror today I found that my system has been churning out nothing but Client ERRORS on the past 110 WU's since roughly Dec29th. What a waste of time! Now having read a few posts around the board it seems CUDA may be to blame. I wasn't aware that my preferences were going to default to a "YES" for GPU if available. (I have an NVIDIA 8300 with 512GB). Yesterday there were over 40WU's in my queue... today there are NONE and the system says I've used my quota of "2" for the day. I've gone into my preferences and turned off the GPU item and updated and run benchmark. Now what!

Yes, exactly the same problem. And it's been going on for the past 2wks (since installing 5.8.15

I'm begining to wonder if there is a bigger picture going on here.. If I read across various boards and posts, I'm starting to see a trend perhaps. There seems to me to be a disproportionate number of complaints about problems cropping up since folks started using version 5.8.15. I wonder if this is just coincidence or is there an underlying problem with this version. I started running it about 2 wks ago and now have no end of issues popping up. I also am aware that a lot of changes have been going on at Berkeley, but they have always been going on...this just seems odd to me.

Thanks John....I've dropped down to 1 day...see what happens....my system runs 24/7 for SETI...I thought I had recalled reading a post suggesting upping the duration, to pick up more WU's in the cache...the most it would hold has been about 4-5 which of course wouldn't carry me through Tue maintenance days...no problem...I'll wait for it to settle down for a few days and see what happens...thanks again.

Hey guys...thanks immensely for the helpful suggestions!! I really appreciate it. What the heck was I thinking of when I decided to try this upgrade just before TUE maint. day..!!! DOAH....lol. The WU that was stuck was a download but it has since cleared through. I tried to get you a few lines out of my "Message" tab, by clicking on the lines and then clicking on the "Copy selected messages", and I guess it sent those lines off to the "clipboard" wherever THAT is..I can't find it and XP help does not even acknowledge that the word even exists!....lol.
Anyway I still have the ...4.11.... error stuck in the "transfer" tab and it retries to communicate every few minutes or so. I'm not too worried about that for now.
The main reason I tried this version upgrade was because I couldn't maintain a WU cache of more than 21hrs of work despite the fact that prefs are set for 9 days....it kept saying computer was available for 0% of the time. I know it's still early to expect much with the new version just installed, but it appears no better and I'm crunching my final WU right now....oh well.
PS...just what the heck is a 'clipboard' and where do I find it?
and yes I still have a sense of humour (Cdn spelling).lol

Uninstalled old BOINC version and installed new 5.8.15. It did the usual initial checks, found the new application and found my computer's sytem info ie processor type etc, then showed the version change from 5.4.11 to 5.8.15...then it developed an error. "[error] No URL for file transfer of setiathome_4.11_windows_intelx86.exe" ...then it said it was backing off for 1 min on download of (above file).
What have I done wrong or still need to do. Can ya guess that I'm not computer savy...lol

There is a work unit 'stuck' in the transfer page.
Do I need to go to 'tools' and click on "attach to project" ? Reluctant to do that and maybe loose my credit history or worse....lol
TIA

Go over to the tech board and read the thread "Y2..." It sounds like the work being done at Berk. might be done today, 6th. I'm in same boat...no a single WU left to crunch.

I may have the same sort of problem also...I have my cache set for 9 days but the most BOINC will provide me at any given time is about 22hrs worth of work (4 WU's). It also has developed a nasty habit of starting a WU and then downloading a new one with a much newer deadline requiring abondoning of the one just started. Then it hops all over from WU to WU starting and stopping depending on the 'latest deadline' of new WU's as they arrive. Been doing this for about a month now.

Welcome to the board Kevin....hmmm..a fellow Canuck eh! You mention that Eric brought you in to the project..I wonder if in one of your future posts, you might mention what part of Canada you are from and if you are currently 'on loan' from a University up here and what projects you might have been involved with prior to coming to Berkeley. You know us, always interested in ex-pats...lol.
Oh !....I live in the heart of University country (Waterloo,ON) and thought I'd mention that any other Canucks in the area might be interested in an upcoming 'talk' being given at the PERIMETER INSTITUTE in Waterloo by Dr. Jill Tarter, Director, Center for SETI Research.
Anyway, thanks for providing us with an insight into what you're working on...much appreciated.

Hi Randy....I've been having the same problem for the past 5 days, until yesterday when it finally stopped all work...I just had a 'pile' of WU's seemingly stuck in the "Transfers" box....not getting here all the way and thus not available to start running. And I had run out of cache. I know there are issues going on in Cali right now and I know it is very frustrating for them. Anyway I decided that with no work I might just as well shut 'er down (not involved with any other projects yet) and save on my electric bill for a couple days...lol. Anyway prior to shut down I decided to run my system 'cleanup disc' once through to clean various caches and the drives of any privacy, regist. errors, junk etc. Then did a complete shutdown. BUT I couldn't resist going back to run SETI again a few minutes later (I'm addicted). Low and behold the darn thing finished all the downloads stuck in the "Transfers" box and started happily crunching again..and has been doing so for the past 20 hrs. Go figure.

PS. I should mention that my system had been online for 3wks nonstop...(not even a restart)....and crunching when SETI was available. My system may have picked up errors etc during that time, and by running my cleanup disc and shuting down, it may have cleaned out those hung up errors...who knows.

Hello "nobody"..here is another thought on publicity.
Dr Jill Tarter, Director, Center for SETI Research is currently embarked on a North American lecture tour. I am not sure how closely she might be affiliated with SETI@Home and the Berkeley folks, but wouldn't it be cool if she could add a small anecdote to her presentations ie '"Laptop calls Home" as part of SETI search, and is rescued.'

The good Dr. will be presenting in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada at the Perimeter Institute in early March 2007. Waterloo is the tech research centre of Canada (silicon valley of the north) and consequently 'tons of computers'here. Just image the exposure and potential BOINC recruits that might be found if she were to mention the 'benefits' of crunching for SETI@Home..ie if you loose your laptop, it could be found again if crunching with BOINC. I'm sure she would at least get a kick out of the whole story.

I plan on attending her lecture when it comes to town here next month, and I invite all fellow SETI@Home crunchers to also attend if in the Waterloo area. If anybody needs details, just ask me or email me via my site profile. The lecture is free but tickets are required.
