I still wonder why everyone still forgets to notice that with the HUGE amount of WUs this guy was crunching, the bandwidth used to move that data back and forth between AZ and Cal Berkeley had to be incredibly high over the period of time he was doing this. Bandwidth is NOT cheap and could have easily passed up the electrical costs depending on how the district is funded and who is providing said bandwidth.

In any case, from an information security standpoint, what he did was wrong. Without board approval (which I doubt he had), this should have never happened, especially at the district level.

I remember seeing his computer lists long ago... they were all identical machines and were generating around 300 cred/day avg, which led me to believe this (edu situation) was the case a year or two ago. It was just a matter of time...

and that probably doesn't even include all of the bandwidth he used to download/upload all those WUs... that adds up fast.

Man loses job after searching too hard for aliens
by Chris Matyszczyk

According to the Arizona Republic, (Brad) Niesluchowski was asked to resign after allegedly using his position at the Higley Unified School District to exercise his own (and our) need for an alien encounter...

...The Republic's sleuths got their hands on documents that suggest Niesluchowski was encouraged to resign after he downloaded free University of California (the terribly forward-thinking Berkeley branch) software that uses idle computers to examine information collected by radio telescopes...

...Niesluchowski, you see, enjoyed the authority to purchase all sorts of technology for his district. And his alleged downloading of alien-hunting software might well have used additional energy resources and caused other related damage or accelerated depreciation to the hardware. The school district estimates these losses at between $1.2 million and $1.6 million...

...Specifically, Niesluchowski stands accused of downloading a program called SETI@home to every computer in the school district...

...However, SETI might not have been the only software Niesluchowski donated to Higley. The school district also claimed it had found another program, with the heavenly name of BOINC, that also emanated from Berkeley...

...Perhaps Niesluchowski's alleged behavior was not entirely thought through. Perhaps he simply hoped no one would ever notice. But, using the moniker "NEZ" he had reportedly become one of the most active and admired alien hunters. The Republic suggests that he earned 575 million "credits,", representing the enormous hours he spent in the search for the next world...

So, there you have it folks. DISCUSS.

Also, this should serve as further warning to those of you in an "administrative" position at a workplace and are using "company" resources for BOINC projects. Many companies/education facilities/etc have policies in place regarding inappropriate or unauthorized use, and this qualifies. Unless you have express consent of whoever the ultimate authority is for your workplace, don't go putting BOINC/etc on ALL OF YOUR MACHINES. kthxbai

Seen the same thing. Can ANYONE with the project please verify if there was an adjustment? 300+ posts to get this across with speculation is BS. From what I have seen, it looks like there's been a 20% drop in RAC. After adding a couple more systems, I was looking at RAC of around 72k, but am barely holding onto 60k when my systems dump their data every other day...

Speculation started this thread... Confirmation and an explanation followed a couple days later, also in this thread...

Here is a link to a post from Eric Korpela, "SOMEONE with the project"...Message ID 789160

Damn would have been nice if this was an announcement on a separate thread... I read all over this one but didn't get that far down/up as I got tired of hearing all the bad math from people. thanks for the infos.

I watched my RAC go from ~136,000 down to ~99,000 before I put SETI on another 20+ machines to try and stop the bleeding.

I seem to have leveled off at close to 127,000 now.

My top performing machines are still losing RAC due to AP. Those that were getting close to 9,000 each, one is down to ~5,000 and others close to 7,000. After seeing a good deal of them not report in for long times and seeing upwards of 7 to 8 AP units (processing) on some of them at one time (8 cores) taking them out of the loop for 30+ hours I decided to stop processing AP altogether for now.

I have a goal I am trying to reach credit wise and then I will turn AP back on and most of the machines off. Particularly the low yeilding ones.

I only crunch SETI. I am in it for the science, but the large numbers of machines I can use on SETI are just for numbers. I wouldn't call myself a credit whore but it is nice to compare your machines and your efforts to that of others.

As long as the credit drop is evenly distributed I don't see there is much to complain about. IMHO

Rob

Seen the same thing. Can ANYONE with the project please verify if there was an adjustment? 300+ posts to get this across with speculation is BS. From what I have seen, it looks like there's been a ~20%ish drop in RAC. After adding a couple more systems, I was looking at RAC of around 72k, but am barely holding onto 60k when my systems dump their data every other day...

Let me also add that I am not processing ANY AP WUs, but am still losing credit...

8 mil, 20th place overall in RAC... and going up.

What ya got for a farm there, son? Care to unhide your computers and let us have a peek? LOL.

Nice RAC there!!!

Sure thing... forgot about the hidden thing.

Have a look in a bit once the stats pages update.

RAC should be a lot higher, got hit for about 10k when the outage occurred...

Some of that is due to the auto credit adjustments that have been put in place.....I was headed to 50k at that time.....now trying to maintain 41k+......

Eeew yuk... knew that was coming sometime soon. Luckily I keep adding systems. My mac server is still warming up, at 6.3k and still rising. May bring another 10-25 c2duo systems up in the next few months here... no way I'll ever reach people in the crazy 100+ks. :P I wish c2quads would drop in price... hopefully thats coming soon.
