Hogwash to 'price gouging' rhetoric.


OK Mr. Ecomomist please explain why the price of gasoline rose so dramtically on the fuel already in a gas stations 10,000 holding tank the day after Katrina struck in states not affected by people evacuating. I guess the Chinese needed it to fuel the increase in Wok usage.

I suspect there should be some rise in price to help deflect the price of recovery, but those price increases should happen weeks if not months in the future and not the day after the storm.

What we have seen is corporate greed!! Did you manage to see that Exxon announced record profits once again with-in days of Katrina landfall.




the same thing happened in the recent UK panic buying spree when the fuel protesters threatened to blocade the depots again... as soon as panic buying startted the fuel companies wacked prices up to over £1.10 a liter the highest they have EVER been here... as soon as the protest turend out to be an empty threat then it all came back down to a penny mroe than it was before.. (not what it actually was notice) this confirms taht at the chance of making a bit of extra dough teh pertrol companies will jump at the chance

i know somone who in the UK fuel crises a few years back ran his desil car on a mixture of streight vegatable oil (bought directly from the supermarcket in deep fat fryer sized drums) and a little turpentine substitute to thin it... her reported no major problems apart form the wierd smell though this mixture was not used for long enough to accertain wether it was damaging to teh engine....

anotehr problem is taht it is illigal in the UK as it contravenes fuel Tax regulations.... not that he had any trouble as all the police cars only had enough petrol at teh time to respond to 999 calls (911 in USA)

the cheapest fuel to run a car on would be paraffin (kerosine) at a mere 20p (36 cents) per liter
but taht woudl chuck out some really nasty black fumes aswell as geting you fines for not paying fuel tax

well petrol her shot to upto £1.09 a liter ($1.97 per liter)($7.45 per gallon!) here the otehr eday amid fearsd that protestors were going to blocade fuel depots like they did a few years ago and bourgt the whole country to a standstill..
so everyone was panic buying and the petrol stations put up prices to get the most of the panic!!!!
since nobaody has actually done anything more than wave a few placards at fuel trucks and drive a convoy of lorrys at 40MPH (65Kph) down the motorway...
the prices are back down to what they were before the scare 89.9p per liter ($1.62 per liter) ($6.15 per gallon) or so per liter)

teh easy way to get to work without any worry about the price of petrol or the rushour gridlock is to cycle if you live close enough. and while you all cry taht that would be suacide with all teh cars, in most major citys (here and in the USA) at rush hour you on a bike will most likly be mooving faster then the cars in the nose to tail gridlock!
the main hazard is all the rubbish taht comes out of the exhaust pipes (tailpipes)
giving you carbon monoxide poisoning

tahts another thing... catalitic converters are compulcery here.... how many cars have them in the USA? about 1 third last i heard!

here in teh UK we now have a relativlly free market for electrisity here... so every few min utes you get somone phoning up or knocking on your door asking you to change to them so taht they can save you money!!! GRRRRR
the advantage is that teh main spark compoanies prices have come down so spark is relativly cheap here... unlike petrol (gas)!

but it is still cheaper to power your heating off gas (the gasious kind not the liquid taht drives yor car) tahn sparks!

still some peopel use soalr power to heat their water and if that works in out climate (usially overcast) then it shoudl work anywhere!

2 ways...

all do as my uncle does... he has a totally solar powered house and uses no grid electrisity nor generators (it woudl cost more tehn the solar gear to get conected to teh grid as he is preaty remote)

or grow huge forests of quick growing trees, burn tehm as fuel in powerstations and plant soem more... (renewable and carbon neutral)

then again i dont really care taht it is so expensive here... i havent got my licence yet! and anyway 2 wheels are sufficent for most places i want to go. and that runs on fry up power!

eitehr taht or to get cheap fuel buy a desil (truck fuel) car and run it on cooking fat miexed with a little bit of white spirit (to thin it) smells like a fish and chip shop but runs a treat...


i have a mate from teh states at uni who wants to buy a smart car here (in the UK) and ship it back home as she would be able to run it on about $2 a week!!!! (they doo somthing like 70 miles per (uk) gallon)

How many gallons of gasoline did you vehicle use trying to save the extra 24¢?



i for one would be happy to pay $3.39 per US gallon.
here it is £0.92.9 or so per liter! thats a staggering £3.70 or so per Us gallon
that works out at about $6.80 per gallon at todays exchange rate!!!

mabie its time the americans learnt taht a 6L gas guzzeleing SUV isnt needed!
and that they would be quite allright with some of teh types of cars we prefer taht can do up to 40 miles per (uk) gallon (just over 1 US gallon)

mabie they should sign up to the kyoto (sp?) treaty aswell!

i have downloaded and installed ubantu for now thougfh with my anchent monitor it only seems to work with 16 colours (i know the monitor will handle at least 256 i think 16 bit aswell)
this in in 800 xs 600, (640 x 408 is just too small)

mabie if i purchase a KVM it can use my good monitor!

so far with ubantu it seems to be strugglening to run anything... could just be me...,
any ideas as to what i should do?

what type of partition did you use?
You may use Partion Magic or fdisk to repartition the drive. Linux uses ext2 or ext3 type partitions among others. If you go with ext2 or 3 then it should recognize the partition.
I've never installed Ubanto. I used to use fdisk to make partitions prior to installing but I have had issues with some distros not recognizing the partitions because of the ownership rights. But if I used the partitioner that came with the distro( If ubanto has one) then try it. I've had better luck that way. It will apply the proper ownership rights for that OS. For instance I have multiple Linux's on my boxes but some will recognize other OS's partitions while others don't, even though they are all supported by the other OS's. Once installed if you have high security settings then that OS may not allow access to other partitions even if they are recognized.


i used the partitioner that came with teh distro to make 1 ext3 and one swap partition, however half way through doing this teh installer crashed bacause of a bad disk so the drive has 2 corrupt partitions on it
when i tryed to install again using a good disk it wont recognise teh drive as existing at all,
mabie if i make a boot disk with Fdisk on it and manually repartiton it it will make it recognisable

i ysed the installers check disk integraty function and it finds the new disk to be fine, is it becausee the hard disk has been incompleatlty partitooned that it isnt being detected?

all it says is taht the installer cant find any partitionalable media

i tryed to install uguntu and unfortunatly my first CD was corrupt (that bach oc CD-Rs were useless!)

i burnt a new CD bun unfortunatly the now half installed system wont recognise my hard drive as existing!

(teh first attempt wiped teh disk then crashes due to currupt disk before it could finish partitioning it)

what should i do?

i have downloaded teh ubantu live cd and seem to like the look of it though the live cd by very nature takes half an hour to load anything!!!

i belive that most unis use debian though as i will not be going for a few years i just wanted to get familiar with teh linux operating system as a whole..

i am intending (once the 600MB disk images has downloaded which is takeng hours ewven with a ADSL (512kb/s) internet connection)
to put ubantu on mey experimental machine and see how well i like it...

i will look out for some other diustros and download some more live CDs, (once i nip to the shop and buy some more blank CD-Rs!!!) will keep you posted how i get on...

does any one know any good website tutorials for linux command line working? (Bash)

yep... exactly like that though it tends to say that it has no work 2 times :-/
i have just halted that machine for the night as it was defering for 23H 59M 59S i may as well! give teh elctricity bill a bit of a break!

mabie i will attach my einstein prodj to it then it can choose between both... i wish i could see some progress meter though even if its just a simple comand line output that says like 10% done 20% done etc
