The only time I ever got that error was when I tried to change the password in the remote_gui.cfg file. I was going to set a standard password across all of my clients and ended up with that error. Try to remove your remote_gui.cfg file (or maybe just move it somewhere else) and restart everything.

this is all teh files in my boinc folder, which one shoudl i move?

i woudl seriously recmed SUSE 10.1 for anyone who has used windoze for a whild and wants to start using linux, the installer is easy to use if a little slow and with KDE it is easy to use as you would windows, then you can experiment more and more untill you are fully competant in linux,

i woudl recomend http://www.linuxquestions.org to help you get started

Is your computer so slwo they are taking away credits as you crunch?

J/K!!

well allmost! it does take me about 30 - 40 hours of CPU time to crunch 1 WU
but running 3 boxes like this means i get through a couyple of WUs a week (not on 24)

you could i belive download the source code and then compile it yourself, that should get around the installation problems!

if liek me you are using a relativly low speck box and seti/boinc really slows down performance when it is running and you want to work, this is my fix
using SUSE 10.1 with KDE
using teh porcess table in system load
i changed boinc form Nice 0 to Nice 8
(any positive number will do)
this turns down teh prority so when you start soem CPU heavy app like graphic rendering, seti will take a back seat and just use up teh slack.
when you are doing nothing it takes full power.

i know you can jsut set it to pause when you are doing somthing but as my comp is only on when i am doing somthing by taht mesure i would never crunch any WUs

the time resource/time sharing is up to you :)

my prefered way of setting times is to lower them all so that the toatll cross project is 100,
then what you have in effect is the %age of time that prodj gets, so i woudl use
seti 75
einmstein 25
to get a 3/4 sahre for seti and 1/4 for einstein

Anyone else getting error 403 when connecting?

this is to do with the internet side of things not the seti side...
this coudl be because of your firewall, try turning it ff or decreacing the sucuraty,

if anyone knwos what port boinc uses then you could forward that port sespificly to keep high sucuraty on your firewall

when i launch teh graphics window (which i dont do often as it slows down teh crunch)
it shows an extreamly long NEGATIVE number for my totalk credit!
what is going wrong here?
see screenie below to show how long!

We paid two different prices, .08$ & .06$, not real sure what the deal is with that.

the .08 would be your daytime "peak" rate the .06 would be the night time "economy" rate
so it is cheaper to run teh computer all night and swich it off all day!
or at least taht is my justification for staying up all night,
still you guys have it easy your side of the adlantic, we pay nerly 10p per KWH here

still taht is cheap compared to petrol (gasoline)
at £1 per litre (thats about $9 a (us) gallon by my rough working)

and all your gas guzzelers are messing with our wether, we have a drought and hosepipe ban and yet it is tipping it down with rain! (all the boreholes are empty!) we had one of the driest winters ever and now one of the wettest mays!

This is all great information to know. Thanks to all who have posted here.
There seems to be a recurring theme with graphics driver malfunction, especially with ATI branded X*** cards as I have found out.

I'm still in the stage where I'm gathering info on Linux, but will be moving on to actual testing on a box shortly. All potential "bugs" aside, I'm really looking forward to this!

Again, thanks all.

one great thing with linux is that you can allways go to
www.linuxquestions.org to get help! ( i am around a bit there too with the same UN)

Dasy2k1 ... did you find the "command line" help you were after?
I gather from your earlier post and reference to going to uni that this will be in relation to doing things such as file creation/deletion/moving/copying, command line mathematics, system input/output, ssh remote host interaction, file and data manipulation, changing file modes, doing file tests, and doing scripting etc...

yeh im getting better at it all the time!

anyway with relation to windoew managers i am using KDE to wrote this with now as i coudlnt get on iwth gnome, kde is cool but uses a lot of RAM, (iu only have 128mb!!!)
]
hopefully i wiull get my new comp soon so i will be able to seti at blistering speeds! (i think an AMD X2 4200 will help a lot!")

if you need help the best forum i have found is www.linuxquestions.org

the eople there are usially very helpfull though i suggets searching the forum for you quetsion forst and only posting if there isnt an answer that solves your problem.

vert rarely are you told to RTFM or STFW though the less severe "google is your freind" somtimes crops up.

The points obvious, just remove your blinders.
If the objective is still not obvious, just reach
around and try the Helen Keller method.

i am slso leaving this conversation because what started as a normal discussion has decended inot a load of n00bs in a flame war! and i can think of better things to do with my time.
