What kind of system is this that you need risers for only 2 GPUs?

Er a cheap and cheerful one, you know you might have seen them, ordinary PC boards, one full length PCIE 16 slot only.

This particular board was the only new one I brought for my Linux conversions.

Oh yes and my GPU's are all second hand as well.

Never heard a peep out of the general rabble until this year.

Well you obviously missed the posts last year, and I think the year before. Then it was mostly about people with access to hundreds of "work" machines should have a separate category

However it is likely to be worse this year because there is the "special app" and the "GPU spoofing" meaning some will be able to bunker 6400 task per machine if they wish.

For reasons I wont go into here, I spent money on my machines and GPU's got round Linux, installed the special app, really for the WOW event ,mostly for my team.

I currently have the time and money to do this, but there are many who do not and would feel totally overpowered by someone running high end CPU and GPU's in multiple rigs.

So lets not call other posters "rabble" it helps to made the divide bigger.

See the bottom of my first post, the answer is yes and I have already successfully completed AP's

Sorry couldn't find that.

Looking at all the lines that Mike pointed out it looks like the problem with the riser again where it suddenly doesn't detect the card. Hence the 142 "waiting to run ".

I will see if there are any better risers around.

I am guessing this line is the problem

"WARNING: BOINC failed to provide OpenCL device, using own enumeration abilities"

Any assistance would be welcome, it also now has 142 tasks "waiting to start"

I have shut it down and checked the riser connections, and now rebooted OK and seem to be crunching OK

Yes it does detect OpenCL on startup

The WOW event is just a bit of fun, it has leader-boards, so yes there is competition and no I do't expect to be able to compete with someone running 2080 Ti's on Linux with the special app.

However I will do my best and try and beat my total for last year, and fly the flag for my team, and my country.

And yes there are people who only crunch to compete, but if they leave WU's un-crunched and abandoned , then we will crunch them later.

We actually need more events like this as we are currently only processing 1% of the Breakthrough Listen Data.

Lets try and keep positive.

Yes you are all right, they have started this way to early.

Well not necessarily, if you start bunkering a week before the event chances are a lot of WU's may not valid straight away as they have not been completed by the wingman.

Now if you start three weeks before, the chances are that nearly all the WU's will validate straight away is higher. Logic really, if annoying for others.

However the unintended consequence of this is it also helps others as all their pending tasks validate at the same time as well

No I have not started bunkering, I may do a couple of machines on the day but that is all.

This why I'm scared to make the switch to Linux, as there is no one close by to help me.. ( Would love to ) but I'm PC dumb!

Steve

It depends what you want to do, in the previous posts Stephen was trying to preserve his machine ID, if you don't care about that, as I didn't, it is not that difficult.

Also I converted crunchers only. I still need my WIndows PC's for gaming, and to be fair I prefer the look and feel of Win, however you can't beat Linux for crunching ;-)

What I basically did was put an SSD into each machine, leave the Win HHD in situ but disconnected, therefore if I need to boot to Windows just a quick replug.

Installing Ubuntu and getting the special app up and running I can now do in probably less that an hour.

Only the WUs crunched between aug. 15th 16: 00 UTC and aug.29 1600 UTC will count.

That should actually be only WU's "returned" not crunched, unless the rules have changed as "bunkering" was certainly encouraged last year.

Which means work can be crunched in advance but not reported until after the event starts.

There are machines out there with caches in the thousands that are crunching work now, but will not report till after the event starts

The reason why we have a 100 WU per device limit is because DA figured that was enough work to keep a 1 core Intel cpu busy for 10 days back at the beginning of the project.

Sorry but I believe you are incorrect. The limit was not part of the original Boinc, it was imposed as CPU's and GPU's got faster and could crunch more work per hour. I do not believe David Anderson had anything to do with it. It is a SETI@Home limit not a Boinc one

After any outage there were hundreds of machines trying to return thousands of task and this caused database problems.

As machines have got faster this has obviously got worse. So the limit is there to prevent the DB being swamped

If there is not a DB problem can I ask why you and others who use this "spoofing" are careful to not return all your tasks in one go after an outage. Because this is what you said when I questioned it before,

You said you didn't want to swamp the server after an outage, why not?

Whilst used responsibly I have no problem with it, however used in conjunction with bunkering, it will, I suspect, lead to more accusations of cheating in the WOW event as the opportunity to bunker thousands of WU's is now easy.

Why do we still have the screensaver when no screens today need saving.

Because it is good PR for those wanting to "show off" SETI@Home and there were many post about it when Windows 10 stopped it from working.

Wait a minute! If you have 2 GPUs in a PC, BOINC will only see 2. How can you tell it you have, say, 4 if you only have 2?

You er.. "spoof " Boinc into seeing the number you want. I personally have no idea how it is done, but you only need to look at the "Top Hosts" to see it in action.

How do I un register from WoW event, as feel people storing WU's are just cheating the system?

The organisers actually encourage this.

It doesn't actually prevent the WU''s getting crunched and results getting returned and of course the large influx of results in the first hours will benefit everyone as all the wu's validated will in fact count for everyone who has any waiting.

However if you really wish to leave the event I suggest you PM Termimator he has helped me in the past.

So, if you have one of these older machines stashed away, try converting it to run Linux and just the CUDA Special App. It will run the Special App just as well as a New machine without having to spend money on a new machine. Basically a Win, Win situation for You and SETI.

Well this MB is from 2008.

https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8762732

It is just sitting on a box in the corner of the room with a spare PSU, new SSD, special app and the old faithful 750ti, running tasks in 5-6 minutes.

Still have to wonder if the performance boost really justifies the hassle of SSDs.

Can't say I have ever had any hassle. These machines I converted are mostly old Windows machines, with existing HHD's which are still in place but disconnected.

I have never has much success with trying to dual boot with Windows, so a new clean SSD is easy and simple and doesn't require a 3.5 inch drive bay as they are so light they can be put anywhere.

If I want to boot to Win (unlikely on these machines) just swap the drive cables.

For all 5 of my conversions I just got a 240GB SSD, well known brands like Kingston, Crucial, and PNY all selling for around £25 ($31)

The question could be: Why the servers still sends new WU above the 100 limit to a non productive host?

Yes this is the question, 33000 tasks!! On that machine his "Max tasks per day" is 1 but 33000 days is 90 years ;-)

Why can that machine download more tasks without returning anything, that must be wrong.

Can one of the regular gurus have a looksee at this computer's tasks, 33,000 seems a tad excessive for built in graphics ;-)

8572161

It's fairly obvious the pc is doing nothing with the tasks at the moment despite it polling every day, but how on earth can anyone amass that many tasks?

Phil.

Yes this person has been mentioned before, I even sent him a PM but got no response.

Look here https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=69782 at the last few posts.

He also has another machine doing the same 8481944

He is obviously using something to fool the servers, what I don't know.
