I noticed what you said about not being able to upload to your website.

Do you use a router perchance? There were loads of problems after MS released a hotfix (K893066) that killed a lot of people's FTP programs (me included) and it seemed to only affect those of us who use routers.

My router (netgear) released new firmware and, although it didn't state as much in the documentation, this fixed my problem - as well as other users I got talking to at the time.

Sorry this is a bit off topic.

To bring it back on, I too have unfortunately waved goodbye to BOINC/SETI after only a week. I hope I tried all reasonable efforts before giving up but it just wasn't working for me - there are a couple of threads started by myself below that refer. I was just browsing in case they had been replied to.

Well, I still got E1920 when I tried installing as a service.

I deleted the BOINC folder first from Program Files, as suggested.

I'm sorry but BOINC is way too un user friendly (eg no instructions) and too buggy (eg won't install as a service option; needs folder permissions to be changed in safe mode) for my liking.

It's been a fun a week. I'll check back from time to time to see if a new version has been released and give it another go.

Good luck.

Yup, those are my settings.

I've just got up and all the work has cleared and uploaded so I'm just about to attempt the service install.

OK, I should clear my outstanding work tonight and then I'll try re-installing as a service option.

I'll delete the BOINC folder first, as you advised. However, if it fails, I'm afraid I shan't be re-installing (as a multi-user) as the whole idea was to have it running when the computer wasn't being used. At the moment it's running even when the computer is being used!

If I install it as a single user then it won't run if it is a different member of my family logged in, but aren't actually using the computer.

I'll post back with the result - obviously it depends how long it takes to clear my outstanding work.

Thanks for that. I tried installing it as a service the very first time I installed it.

I could try re-installing once more I suppose (I've tried installing as a service twice). How would I stop downloading any more work? I've just checked the preferences and I can't see anything there.

I tried installing as a Service when I first installed it - but I got E1920. This was discussed on this forum earlier this week:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=16462

That thread refers to another thread but to be honest I couldn't see anything in that which helps me install as a service.

I installed BOINC a week ago and after some initial stumbling blocks I now have it running on my computer.

My set up is: XP Home - One admin account, which is used purely for installing/uninstalling software and one or two other things that have to be done via an admin account; and four limited accounts - one each for me and my family. I installed BOINC as multi-user (the second option on install).

My question is: if I switch out of my account (ie I don't log off, merely switch user) and my wife logs into hers, does BOINC start running in my account after a while as it hasn't been used?

It looks like it does from the messages - there was plenty of activity while my wife was using the computer. And she complained that it seemed to be running a lot slower.

This wasn't how I imagined it would be. I imagined it would be one program that would start running in the background if NO ONE was using the computer - not just the account.

If someone could confirm the situation I'd be grateful as I will have to reconsider my position if this is the case. I did have a look at "Paul's BOINC Documentation" but I couldn't find anything.

Thanks.

I'm having the same problem. I've got about three sets of results ready to upload but they keep failing. Since last night.

I think I've downloaded some work since but the uploading fails. I'm at work so don't have access to my log but the messages are similar to the ones posted above.

Well, I think that's cracked it! Thanks.

I used the safe mode method as I figured I wouldn't be touching the properties of this folder again, and besides, the MS page it linked me to didn't say anything about installing it onto XP.

So, to summarise, to run BOINC on one or more limited accounts:

1. Install BOINC (with an admin account), choosing multiple users (second option).
2. Reboot into safe mode (I use the MSCONFIG method as F8 doesn't seem to work for me).
3. Open Windows Explorer - right click on the BOINC directory - properties - security tab - add button - type "everyone" (no quotes) - click the check names button - click the OK button - click full control - click ok.
4. Reboot into Normal mode.
5. Touch wood, that should be it. That's as far as I've got!

Caveat: Others with a similar problem: follow that guidance at your own risk - if you read my posts above you'll see that I only have the faintest grasp of what I'm doing ;-)

I'll post back if there's any developments.

To set the rights in XP. Open Windows Explorer - right click on the directory - properties - security tab - add button - type "everyone" (no quotes) - click the check names button - click the OK button - click full control - click ok.

This is really starting to annoy me!!!

I uninstalled my BOINC and did a fresh multi-account install (why can't you change this option after installation??)

Then I went to follow your instructions about setting the rights to the folder.

I don't have a "Security" tab when I choose properties. I have the following tabs:

General + Sharing + Customize

I've tried looking at the Sharing tab before (see my earlier posts).

There isn't an "Add" button on there; nor on the other two tabs.

I'm going to uninstall BOINC again as otherwise it keeps opening up useless sessions in all my families' accounts.

I'm ready to give up with this crock to be brutally honest with you.

Cheers for that. I might try that some time but I have managed to half solve this by doing the following:

I set my user account to admin status and did a fresh install in that account. Then I reset this back to a limited account (do they call these User accounts in the USA - I've got a feeling they do?) I also installed it as a single user.

Even though this is a limited account again, it works in that account. It won't work in any or my family members' accounts (not only because it's a single user set up, but I figure they would get the same problems I had trying to access it when it had been installed via my admin account).

So as long as I'm logged on, it will be running in the background. That's enough to satisfy my curiosity for the time being :-)

I hope ET appreciates all the trouble we're going to!

I tried installing it as a Service Account (the third option when installing) - which I tried to do the first time I installed it anyway. This is through my admin account.

Both times I got this error message:

E1920: Service BOINC failed to start. Verfy you have sufficient privileges.

Or words to that effect. My admin account has all the privileges possible, AFAIK.

Apologies for what I said about it being "pants" by the way. But it does seems a bit tedious to set up. To be honest I'm just about ready to give up on the whole idea; I'm sure ET will let us know he's there when he's ready.

BTW, if it helps, I have XP Home, not Professional. Maybe that's why I can't grant or deny limited users access to certain folders? I've tried looking into this in the past as I have various pre-XP programs which don't work properly with Limited accounts (Paint Shop Pro Version 5 for instance).

Hmmm... cheers for your help but still no go I'm afraid.

I uninstalled it, re-installed it in a separate folder on my C drive (ie not Program Files), but it still gives me exactly the same errors.

There are three distinct ways of fixing this. The first is to grant your limited user group write access to c:Program FilesBOINC and all of the directories under that directory. The second is to create a BOINC account that has write access to only this directory, and install as a service using this account (or you could allow BOINC administrative priviledges). Third is to install to a directory that is not in the Program Files directory tree.

OK, I tried 3. and that hasn't worked.

1. I'm not sure how to grant my user group write access to the folder(s)? I right clicked on all the folders, selected Properties > Sharing and checked the "all users on this computer" box (or the one in the middle, can't recall the exact name I'm afraid). Is that how to do number 1? Or do I do it within the modify user groups function from the control panel? If the latter then I can't see where to do that.

2. I don't understand your second suggestion (in light of the fact that I don't understand how to grant or deny users access to certain folders, perhaps this isn't surprising).

From reading other posts on here, it is my considered opinion that BOINC is a bit pants, innit? ;-)

Do you use a router? There were loads of problems with people who FTP and use a router with a recent hotfix (can't recall if it was this one).

My router (netgear) issued new firmware which solved this problem and I am now FTPing again.

I have no idea if this would affect BOINC but it's just a thought. Sorry if this is barking up the completely wrong tree.

OK. I downloaded this BOINC thing, which as far as I can gather is a piece of kit that is used by various projects as well as SETI.

I can't work it out at all. There's no instructions for how to use it, and googling hasn't turned up anything that has helped me either.

OK, Rant over :-)

I use a limited (XP) account for my day-to-day stuff. I only use the admin account when I need to (installing programs for example).

The BOINC thing seems to work on the admin account, but that's no good to me as I rarely log in to the admin account.

I can't seem to get it running on the limited account. It worked when I changed my limited account to an admin account so I suspect that the program needs to write to the file in the Program Files folder.

But I want my everyday account to be limited. I tried setting the BOINC folder to allow access to all computer users (it was in the Sharing tab in Folder Properties) - which at least allows me to open the program from my limited account.

But it does nothing. Not a sausage. It doesn't even display the project. I tried adding it again (URL and account key) but it does nothing.

It seems to be trying to connect to "the local host", then after a while it says Disconnected - so I suspect this is the problem. BOINC manager is allowed by my firewall.

I'm stumped. Anyone?
