This hurts me as much as it hurts you.
(Message 2037285)

Post: You know speaking for myself I would never have considered staying on the cutting edge with my computer hardware had it not been for SETi@Home. Having said that I would seek out some corporate sponsors for this very reason as I am sure Intel, AMD, Nvidia, and perhaps others would be willing to pony up some moola if it was explained to them, like they were two year old kids, that the vast volunteer body of the distributed computing had upgraded hardware MOSTLY as a result of the projects themselves. To have a shutdown would be counter productive to their bottom lines. Food for thought during the hibernation, so get those spiffy suits ready boys, there are some doors that need to be knocked on and telephones waiting to ring. As to the other I really do appreciate your response to us, looking forward to more in the future. Please by all means stay in touch!!! Antony |

SETI@home hibernation
(Message 2036870)
Posted 9 Mar 2020 by Sir Antony Magnus
Post: Good luck those of you @SETI! I hope that in your research there are some more WOW moments! I personally have enjoyed all the time that was permitted to me to be able to participate in such a great undertaking. As others have said such a wild ride! I too look forward to the day when SETI comes out of hibernation with something new and until that day comes, there are other project ventures that need computing power so of course I will be contributing. I was kind of hoping to hit a few more milestones myself before the inevitable conclusion but alas, life! Eh Good tidings to all of you and thanks! Sincerely, Antony |

BOINC wishlist task progress conundrum
(Message 2019523)
Posted 18 Nov 2019 by Sir Antony Magnus
Post: It appears that BOINC has an issue with regards to saving completed work progress on a specific task after having rebooted a computer for updates/etc.. As we well know regardless of what operating system one uses, a system reboot is a necessary for keeping the said system up to date. Therefore I propose a system by which a user/contributor can initiate a "save task progress to the HDD" prior to any system reboot. I have seen this problem where no matter the platform or project when a reboot is done there are times where a task's progress has been reset to 0% or fails altogether. This is unacceptable, and I think having this feature to write task progress to disk before a system reboot occurs would help stem the tide of lost research and wasted participant time. As I would have it done a participant would simply have the option available in BOINC to do so before doing a system reboot. Would be nice guys! Surprised this feature has not been implemented before... |

Linux Ubuntu 16.04 LTS BOINC multiplies itself in memory
(Message 1979703)
Posted 10 Feb 2019 by Sir Antony Magnus
Post: I am pretty sure it was the BOINC manager GUI in Ubuntu 16.04, I even tested it by opening, closing and exiting multiple times. Perhaps it was the version Ubuntu had in their repositories? I am aware Ubuntu is never rapid in releasing newer software versions through their repos, and whatever they had was what I used at the time. |

BOINC resource allocation
(Message 1979701)
Posted 10 Feb 2019 by Sir Antony Magnus
Post: Thank you kindly sir, appreciate that feedback. I had forgotten that it allocated resources in the 100 percent range, for some reason or another I had it set to 200 Seti, 100 CPDN, 80 Rosetta, 40 Einstein. Not really a good setup considering that it works only within the 100 percentile range. |

Linux Ubuntu 16.04 LTS BOINC multiplies itself in memory
(Message 1979630)
Posted 9 Feb 2019 by Sir Antony Magnus
Post: I was running a BOINC install on a Linux Ubuntu 16.04 LTS machine awhile ago and noticed that when opening viewing, and exiting the BOINC manager BOINC manager will multiply itself in Linux memory. Very unusual. Do not recall the version of BOINC I was using at the time or anything. It happened then and I do not know if that is still currently happening or not. More or less this is an FYI for users to be aware of if running Linux Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I know currently Ubuntu is 18.04 LTS not sure about this version at all, perhaps someone running this currently knows? |

BOINC resource allocation
(Message 1979628)
Posted 9 Feb 2019 by Sir Antony Magnus
Post: Hello all, I have recently returned and been out of the loop for awhile, my question is regarding resource allocation. For instance in my case I set BOINC up for the following project priorities; 1. SETI 2. ClimatePrediction 3. Rosetta@Home 4. Einstein@Home Now after having allocated the resources appropriately on a newly installed BOINC cruncher it downloaded large quantities of Einstein@Home which if you refer to the sequence above I have set to lowest priority settings. is this a normal way BOINC handles the resource allocations? |

Post: Well as for me I would like to hear the forensic examination of how the Sun set as it were. Also would like to hear the why's as to the rejection of the donated hardware. Mere curiousity. In regards to donating, everyone here is responsible for keeping this alive one way or another IMO. Nuff said on that. P.S. @ WaveMaker good one. Will have to try my luck out with a lazer next time I frequent a liquor establishment. Beats those silly pickup lines, eh? Thanks for the idea. Antony |

Post: I was considering the recurring donations program. We support you SETI and will do what we can! Also I figure that at this rate if donations keep up the way they have been then in approx 12 ($750,000US divided into 12= $62,500US a month) months they should have enough in the budget to keep them afloat, and meet current objectives. Although personally I am still shooting for the big 750K this month. Would be nice I am sure:) Antony Magnus P.S. Does anyone know if you choose to opt in to the recurring donations program if SETI keeps sending you that tax deductions forms? Personally I say save the money for the stamp and put it online for printout via users accounts. Just an idea:) |

Post: Antony Magnus- thanks, that makes at least the 4th time I 've run into that sond since lunch ;) 3 of them in about half an hour (different stations on the dial, but still). Apologies, I know that at times the radio stations overplay songs. hehe. It was said that it is not the fault of the radio stations, but rather the callers who request it incessantly. The important thing to note is I am not the one who is requesting, I have the CD. OK, so get the microphones ready and the karaoke machine fired up cause here comes one from Genesis.. Misunderstandin by Genesis Lyrics provided by Rockmagic.net There must be some misunderstanding There must be some kind of mistake I waited in the rain for hours You were late Now it's not like me to say the right thing But you could've called to let me know I checked your number twice, don't understand it So I went home Well I'd been waiting for this weekend I thought that maybe we could see a show Never dreamed I'd have this feeling But seeing you is believing That's why I don't know why You didn't show up that night There must be some misunderstanding There must be some kind of mistake I was waiting in the rain for hours You were late Since then I've been running around trying to find you I went to the places you always go I rang your home but got no answer Jumped in my car, i went round there I still don't believe it He was just leaving There must be some misunderstanding There must be some kind of mistake. |

When trying to access stats while they've been doing their updates I've seen a try-again-later page before, but today I'm just getting missing-server or connection-refused errors. Aye, I have been experiencing problems connecting as well there for the past 2 days. Was just about to post about this myself. @ Willy thanks for the update Antony Magnus |
