What a lot of people also forget that if the AP science database runs again, there isn't a whole lot of AP tapes left to do (for as far as i know) so eventually we will run out of those too. We've reached the point that we surpassed the amount of computer power to realtime run the application therfore we will have times without work untill there is a bigger data volume, a other program with it's own calculations (as AP). On the other hand, look at other projects which you think has potential or your interest.

I've chosen theSkynet as another project. Although this program is only for getting the experience in distributed computing and likely to run out of work(thus I am going to look for a third project) for that matter I do keep it in the loop. Along with seti@home even if they don't have work available. with the right priority settings they will go and do stuff once able.

Just my thought on this all.

What you can do is sign up for TheSkynet pogs. This is the test project for getting acquainted with distributed computing with data from the Pan-STARRS1 telescope. It is my backup project. Although they had for 3 years of data and they just added new galaxy's to process as they did run out a few days ago.

As I am running boinc as it is origionally set up, to use idle processing power(except for my teams annual stampede) I don't get to upset if there is no work. My computers are not running any more or less and I only have these two projects attached at the moment. Is there no work than the computer has a day off.

I can't help but believe that S@H needs to be broken into 3 separate projects .... not visible one from another.

Astropulse is a addition to Seti@home, Seti@home searches for narrow band signals over a longer period and astropulse is searching for shorter pulses but with a much broader band.

(we are down now ...this is a good time to do it and reduce the size of associated DB's)

There are multiple databases at seti@home, but for 3 of them we feel the effect directly if they get stuck.

from the stats page:
BOINC master database: The mysql database that contains all BOINC related information (user stats, forum messages, basic workunit/result information, etc.).
BOINC replica database: A back-up server which contains an identical copy of everything in the BOINC database. Read-only queries can be aimed at this server to lessen the load on the BOINC database.
SETI@home science database: The informix database that contains final science products returned by SETI@home clients.
Astropulse science database: The informix database that contains final science products returned by Astropulse clients.

Splitting the separate programs into it's own project also means that we run out of work even faster, also the staff than need to maintain 2(or 3) projects. Which is always more work than 3 as one.
Also that we don't have more work to crunch doesn't mean that the staff isn't doing something. They are doing some scientific "stuff" over there

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOINC_Credit_System

This is the way the boinc credit system is designed.

In short, if a computer does 1 Gflop/s it wil give you 200 cobblestones per day. Giving a fixed number of cobblestones to a Wu is possible if you know exactly how much flop's a Wu takes.

To be fair, as seti is the first project which used boinc and the new program's were developed with each other, the seti project is one of the few who's giving the correct amount of cobblestones.

The reason some projects give more is because of the people who do this solely for the credit's will go to the project which give's the most per time spent.

The number of credit's a machine can gather is therefore project specific and that's the reason I only compare machine's with each other which are doing the same project.

It's the stats sites who are making a mess of it adding the credits from multiple project's and comparing those. This could only work if all the credits are calculated the same.

Oh yeah! The K80 is rated 8.7 TFLOPS/s for single precision and therefore would/should be considerably faster then the fastest consumer GPUs.

http://www.computerworld.com/article/2848128/servers/nvidia-reaches-high-on-graphics-performance-with-tesla-k80.html

Problem really is the price, it should be around $7000 :-(

just a thought.

From the article
Dell's PowerEdge C4130 is a 1U server that looks more like an appliance and will be able to accommodate up to four K80 cards

At 8,75TFlops a card. 4 cards per 1u server and a 40u rack(2u for switches).
8,75*4*40 = 1400Tflops
That's a lot of crunching, with six of these racks you could double the output of the boinc program entirely. (boinc site says 8,4 Pflops across all projects.)

As a side note the press release from dell says it has up to 7,2Tflops per server. What I find a strange number as the K80 has 2,91Tflops double precision and that makes for an 11,64Tflops for four cards.

PS. This is just some thinking from someone who has no experience with rack servers. Do know the power an cooling can be problematic with so much in a rack.

Or it's the results coming back.

I hope it's new work. But there are over 1million results returned.

This is asuming they are 10kB a piece(i have returned larger results)
1000000x0,01=10000MB

about 300Mb incoming(outgoing on cricket) makes 37,5 MB/s

10000/37.5/60=4.44Hr this is the amount of time the graph is up.
So i'm not getting my hopes up yet.

OOPS, Messed up big. it's 4,4 minutes. Mybe 3:30 local time makes me not as sharp

Even if there was no disabling of an account after so many unsuccessful login attempts, there's the issue of network latency. Even if this GPU monster could check billions of combinations a second, good luck with hitting that remote system at that rate. You'd probably end up with under 100 per second, maybe not even close to that.

Usually I set my servers up to hold the server response, on a false password, for about 4 seconds, so they can't use more than 15 passwords a minute or 21600 passwords a day. And with that many false login attempts i wil be alerted

As discussed a while ago there is an "offline" nitpicker that it being used, just not talked about for some reason.

I've recently watched the 10yr anniversary video's again and from what i could tell.
The way they do it now is that there's a machine, server, desktop or something which run's intermittent , where the nitpicker is a piece of software which should be able to run the results as they are comming in.

For those who are interessted in the video i believe is was in Eric Korpela's presentation. (just looked it up it's around 53m:45s).
Just on the subject the presentation from Jeff Cobb and Matt Lebofsky is also verry interesting as it's about the backend in 2009.

My own laptop which i normally don't use except for our annual stampede of our team, got around 95°C, so i took it to the garage and gave it a few short shots of compressed air (not to much as the fan starts to spin really fast, short test with an rpm meter and an old fan shows 15k+rpm).

after this the temps got down to around 55°C with the fan going slow.
I only use the cpu and it's an core-i3 so no heat generating monster.

Well i've read somewhere some time ago that they optimised the entire distribution system for the 100M link. I can imagine that those optimizations are an extra strain on the servers which make the servers the bottleneck at 2 times the demand

Thanks now it works. I did lose my work unit but its oke. the program runs now, wel if it gets a new work unit

I have to come back on that, the boinc program started to download new work, and then came the same download of the program, i have tried almost every possibility with the program, manual adding the seti program, reinstalling the entire program. nothing worked.

I have Seti@home running for a while now, I have com up with lot's of trouble along the way, but the program hasn't been so stubbern, as far as I can remember.

On my laptop the program was running fine but after a reinstallation of boinc the setiathome program doesn't download. It's in the download list but it just doesn't come in. i've tried to copy the same program from my main computer but he just overwrites it.
