I'm sorry if this has already been suggested and tried but, have you turned off you throttleing? I used to throttle my quads but they always locked up or else corrupted packets. I dissabled throttleing and all was cleared up.

Hope this helps.

Ok, this one I don't know how to do. Where are the throttle controls? In the bios? if so, is that what ASUS calls it?

If Throttling is the same as OC, my cpu is factory set at 2.4, only the video cards are OC'd and again, factory.

I have found new video drivers, the last ones installed were March 2008, the newest ones are June 23, 2008 from NVIDIA, evga has May 12, 2008 drivers. I installed the June drivers tonight. I suspect it won't make a difference, but we'll see, I just may be surprised.

The BIOS is up to date, and all the chipset drivers are current. They were all released in Oct 2007, and I have installed those drivers so many times, I know them off by heart.

I was right, this morning, FROZEN, with the new video drivers, but this time, it didn't even get a chance to turn off the screen saver. When I turned the monitor on, the screen saver icon for BOINC was sitting there. That means it froze within the first 3 minutes after kicking in. It is only on for 5 minutes before it shuts down the monitor.

...Boinc is the culpret. Stable without boinc, unstable with boinc...

I'd suggest reverting to stock for a while, and/or perhaps 2.4V. If it still freezes I suppose there could be a problem with either the machine or the Boinc installation itself [or configuration settings perhaps?]. If it doesn't freeze anymore then I'd suggest there maybe issues occurring only under sustained load.

[Later: I notice some restarts in some of your WUs I looked at, I think I heard that sometimes suspend or hibernation is known to behave 'funky' on Vista with Boinc, perhaps setting "Leave applications in memory while suspended?" to "Yes" may help]

As for reverting, I may have to, but I would rather not, since I am pounding through approx. 50 wu's every 24 hours if not more, depending on freeze downtimes.

If it freezes right after I go to work, it sits here doing nothing for 8 to 10 hours, but otherwise, if it doesn't freeze until later in the day, then it really zips through 'em.

So wo do I revert. Do I have to uninstall the current app, then download the 2.4 and install that? or is there a rollback feature?

"Funky" is not necessarily the word I would use for Hibernate mode... more like Flakey, useless, frustrating, I am sure there are more f-words, but I need to keep this clean. My machine has all the hibernation and sleep modes turned off. It is not allowed to go into any of those modes, except to shut down the monitor and the Hdrive. Or in the case of a power failure, shut the whole machine down when the UPS drops below 40%. Which happened there a week or so ago.

My machine has been load tested by the store that sold it to me. I have already replaced the Hdrive and CPU under warranty, maybe it is still my hardware, I actually suspect the motherboard after talking to a friend of mine, but that is going to be a hard one to prove... I think.

However, the machine runs fine with my games, but when Boinc is up and running full out, set at 80%, -> FREEZE. It Freezes always after I walk away, and Boinc is set to screen saver at 4 minutes.

I was getting system freezes about a month ago on my Q6600... Yes system freezes, NOT BSOD. Swapped out my "high performance" Ballistix PC2-8500 with old faithfull Kingston ValueRam PC2-6400 and been stable even since. The Ballistix ran for about 2 months before starting to fail... this was the 2nd set of the product that failed for me and seems to be a recurring problem from reading reviews.

So, after I posted that, my machine froze twice a day. After being frustrated, and reset button rebooting, I decided that it froze twice a day for three days, don't run boinc again for a couple of days. I restarted it here today, Saturday, so far my machine is freeze free, but I just had it upload to my account just a few minutes ago, some time after midnight. I have the Network connection inside boinc disabled. I turn it on when I want to upload because I am on Satelite internet, and they have caveman style download mb limits.... how archaic, but I digress. Boinc is the culpret. Stable without boinc, unstable with boinc. I would be willing to bet that this machine is frozen again tomorrow morning.

So after all the power failures, having to shut the machine down for one thing or another, reboots due to DVD burning etc., BOINC updated to my account this morning around 7 am, and when I arrived home at 5:30 pm, my machine was frozen. Counting the number of completed work units at 14, and my machine completes 4 per hour I'd say it was slightly over 2 hours that the system froze up.

Again, my machine ran fine for a week without boinc. With boinc, 2 days.

I see a pattern here. Anyone else suffering from this problem? Or is it just me.
Thanks.

Hi, I am back.

I posted to this thread almost 2 full months ago.

Thanks for the info to upgrade the app, I am running 5.10.45 on q6600, not oc'd but with factory oc'd 8800 gt vid cards in a case with 7 fans, and vista 64.

The CPU temps out at 36c. But here is the problem. About every two days, the machine freezes. No rhyme or reason. It can freeze up while I am using it, when only Boinc is running, and either during the day or over night.

Now I wasn't sure if it was the machine or BOINC, but now I am convinced it is something to do with BOINC. I have had the machine running for 1 week now without BOINC running, Vista blocks it at startup and I have to manually override vista to get it to start, so it was easy to not let it run. No freezes at all, runing 24/7 for one week. I have restarted BOINC less than 1/2 hour ago, so we will know later tomorrow if it starts freezing. There are no warnings or errors in the event log for Vista.

The freezes are irritating.

But to let you know, the Work done has climbed from just around 300 in May 2nd, 2008 to 135,000 on June 30.

Caddy: "Think you can keep your head down that long?"

Golfer: "I'd move heaven and earth to break 100 on this course."
Caddy: "Try heaven, you've already moved most of the earth."

Golfer: "Do you think my game is improving?"

Golfer: "Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?"
Caddy: "Eventually."

Golfer: "You've got to be the worst caddy in the world."
Caddy: "I don't think so sir. That would be too much of a coincidence."

Golfer: "Please stop checking your watch all the time. It's too much of a distraction."
Caddy: "It's not a watch - it's a compass."

Golfer: "How do you like my game?"
Caddy: "Very good sir, but personally, I prefer golf."

Golfer: "Do you think it's a sin to play on Sunday?"
Caddy: "The way you play, sir, it's a sin on any day."

Golfer: "This is the worst course I've ever played on."
Caddy: "This isn't the golf course. We left that an hour ago,"

Golfer: "That can't be my ball, it's too old."
Caddy: "It's been a long time since we teed off, sir."

NICE CAR

A elderly man walks into a used car dealership ready to buy a car. The
salesman brings the old man over to one of his finest cars and starts
describing all the features. The old man gets into the car and discovers
a bag of tees in the glove compartment. He asks what these are for, to
which the saleman replies "These are used to prop your balls up while
your driving". The old man replies, " boy this car really does have
everything.

Joe was teeing off from the men's tee. On his downswing, he realized
that his wife, Lucrecia, was teeing up on the woman's tee directly in
front of him. Unable to stop his swing, he nailed it, and hit her directly
in the temple, killing her instantly.

A few days later, Joe got a call from the coroner regarding her autopsy.

Coroner: "Joe, your wife seemed to have died from blunt force trauma to
the head. You said you hit a golf ball and hit her in the temple, is
that correct?"

Joe: "Yes, sir, that's correct."

Coroner: "Joe, I also found a golf ball wedged up her butt."

Joe: "Was it a Titleist 3 ?"

Coroner: "Yes, it was."

Joe: "That was my mulligan."

A big flood comes and washes a town away, frightened, this one old guy is hanging frantically onto a tree surrounded by rushing flood waters, cars and trailers all rushing by him crashing into the tree as they wash down stream.

The old man looks to the sky and cries "God, I have always followed you and tried to live a good life, please save me now!"

Finally a guy in a canoe comes along and says to the old man, "QUICK! Climb down into my canoe, I can hardly hold it steady, Hurry!"

The old man says "No!, God will save me"
The guy in the canoe tries desparately to get the old man in the canoe, but he refuses to budge, tired and unable to hold the canoe steady, the man moves on with the rushing water.

Again the old man cries "God, I have always followed you and tried to live a good life, please save me now!"

A few minutes later a power boat comes by and again, the man in the boat tries desparately to get the old man out of the tree.
The old man says "No!, God will save me"

The guy in the power boat shakes his head and moves on to save other people.

Again the old man cries "God, I have always followed you and tried to live a good life, please save me now!"

A few minutes later, a helicopter shows up, the pilot through the loud speaker says to the old man, grab the rope that I lowered, I will take you over to the shore.

The old man says "No!, God will save me"

After 20 minutes, the guy in the helicopter is low on fuel and leaves, unable to convince the old man to grab the rope.

Suddenly the old man, tired and shakey, loses his grip, falls in the river and drowns. He dies and comes before God. The old man says to God "Why God, after all these years have you foresaken me. I have always tried to live your ways, followed your teachings, been kind to others, and in my darkest hours, you left me? Why God? What did I do wrong?

God says to the old man "What are you talking about, I heard your cries, I sent a canoe, then a power boat and finally a helicopter to rescue you. What more did you want, a personal invitation?"

Okay, I'd keep an eye on it for a while if there's any reoccurrence, and be doing basic things like running memtest86+, checking drivers are up to date etc. One thing I've noticed that if there's any kind of glitch in the system, then the app being a tad faster means they error out faster too if there's a problem. At least compute errors are recognised as such, and reissued.

Looking at your WUs, one thing that doesn't make sense is while some report the stock 2.4GHz, others are reporting well in excess of 3GHz... That's a bit odd, and I'm not quite sure what that means just yet, perhaps you're running at stock speed but with reduced multiplier? that would OC the RAM/FSB wouldn't it?

Jason

I have no idea what that means.... reduced multiplier? ques que ce?

as for setting the app for more than 2% I guess I could, but I normally use this machine for gaming, and COD4 is pretty demanding on this system.... I haven't tried it yet with the app still running in the background. I am constantly fiddling with the preferences though. Maybe I screwed something up?

And yes I realize that COD4 only uses one cpu... however, when it does, it is maxing out the cpu according the the readout on the G15 keyboard lcd screen.

I have had some problems with this machine. Right out of the box it had to go back to the shop for a CPU replacement and hard drive replacement. The Video cards had been swapped in and out of their slots a couple of times, and finally I am able to run the games without freeze up.
Maybe all these problems are related the CPU again, The techy that fixed my machine was sure the CPU fragged my hard drive.
I have lots of warranty left on the CPU so I will keep an eye on it incase it is about to chowder again.

Thanks.

Hi There Bits of Guy, I note you're running Vista, could you tell us what directory Boinc is installed in please ? (This may be a Boinc issue)

BOINC is installed in the c:\\programs\\Boinc
I am running 64bit vista.

BOINC doesn't seem to have any problem normally. I have been uploading a pile of stuff since May 2.

I used to be a member a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, but I moved and lost touch with my account, and then tried boinc on an AMD 3000, running xp under a new id, but BOINC or Seti wouldn't run on my ATI card with no idea when they would get a fix in for it, so I uninstalled.

I only recently restarted with SETI on May the 2. I have been plowing through wu's at about 50 a day for the last 4 days. I just happened to notice those WU's that were Ready but wouldn't go, everything else around them, stuff received before and after had no problem sending.

Additionally,

I had about 23 instances of AK_v8_win_x64_ssse3x.exe running in my task manager but not using up any CPU cycles. Only 2 are using any cpu cycles.

Why are there so many instances of them? Can't you reuse them? or close them down when they are not running any WU's.

I ask this because I would think that so many would start to use resources, such as RAM or swap file space, etc. Maybe you should look at cleaning up some of your code to eliminate all these open ended instances of the exe file.

Just a thought, and just my opinion.
