The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected former president Donald Trump’s request to block release of some of his White House records to a congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The order turned aside Trump’s request to block the records release while the case continues through the courts. It means there is no legal obstacle to release of the materials from the National Archives.

The order, with only Justice Clarence Thomas noting his dissent, did not provide reasoning for rejecting the former president’s application. Nor did Thomas explain why he would have granted the request. Neither is uncommon when the court is addressing an emergency request.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A hospital in New Orleans says it has identified two patients infected with a rare, drug-resistant fungus — the first time it’s been found in Louisiana.

Candida auris has already been found in Washington, D.C., and at least 20 other states including Georgia, Florida and Texas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The fungus is a harmful form of yeast that can be resistant to the most common antifungal drugs.

The CDC considers it an emerging global threat and says it is especially dangerous to hospital and nursing home patients with serious medical problems.

Although the patients at University Medical Center are the first known in Louisiana, other undetected cases are likely, Dr. Nirav Patel, chief medical officer told The Times-Picayune / The New Orleans Advocate.

“This bug could have been here in Louisiana for quite some time,” he said, noting outbreaks in Florida, where 135 cases have been reported, and Texas, with 30.
More than 1,100 cases had been diagnosed nationwide as of Aug. 21, according to the CDC. California had reported 245 cases, Illinois 243, New York 235, and New Jersey 70.

A laboratory leak is now the more likely origin of Covid, MPs have heard, because after two years of searching an animal host has never been found.

Speaking to the Science and Technology Select Committee, Dr Alina Chan, a specialist in gene therapy and cell engineering at MIT and Harvard, said there was also a risk that Covid-19 was an engineered virus.

Dr Chan, said: “I think the lab origin is more likely than not. Right now it’s not safe for people who know about the origin of the pandemic to come forward. But we live in an era where there is so much information being stored that it will eventually come out.

“We have heard from many top virologists that a genetically engineered origin is reasonable and that includes virologists who made modifications to the first Sars virus.

“We know this virus has a unique feature, called the furin cleavage site, and without this feature there is no way this would be causing this pandemic.

“A proposal was leaked showing that EcoHealth and the Wuhan Institute of Virology were developing a pipeline for inserting novel furin cleavage sites. So, you find these scientists who said in early 2018 ‘I’m going to put horns on horses’ and at the end of 2019 a unicorn turns up in Wuhan city.”

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – Three residents of The Villages have recently been arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into voter fraud, court records show.

Jay Ketcik, Joan Halstead and John Rider are each charged with casting more than one ballot in an election, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

The probe into the allegations of voting irregularities was initiated by the office of Sumter County Supervisor of Elections Bill Keen, according to prosecutors. Keen declined to comment about the cases, citing the ongoing investigation.

With him on the plane that Saturday evening were dozens of people — senior aides, Air Force One personnel, junior staffers, journalists and other members of the large entourage typical for a presidential trip — all squeezed together in the recirculating air of a jetliner.

“Stop the president,” White House physician Sean Conley told Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, according to a new book by Meadows set to publish Tuesday that was obtained by the Guardian newspaper. “He just tested positive for covid.”
“Had I been there, and Dr. Conley would have told me they would have received a positive test, I would have assumed it was accurate and frankly canceled everything right away,” said John F. Kelly, one of Trump’s previous chiefs of staff, adding that he also would have rushed Trump to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. “To do anything else would be irresponsible.”

In fact, Trump was hospitalized at Walter Reed about a week later. [Oct 2nd] From the day he tested positive until his hospitalization, Trump came in contact with more than 500 people, either those in proximity to him or at crowded events, not including rallygoers, according to a Washington Post analysis of the president’s interactions during that period.

That seven-day window reveals a president and chief of staff who took a reckless, and potentially dangerous, approach to handling the coronavirus, including Trump’s own positive test.

By the end of October, more than two dozen people in Trump’s orbit would test positive for the coronavirus.

BERLIN (AP) — A man in Germany has discovered the hard way that it’s best to get a driving license first before trying to use it.

Police in Bergheim, near Cologne, said Tuesday that the 37-year-old drove himself to his driving test, parking an Opel Zafira outside the test center in front of an astonished examiner.

They said he told police officers who were called to the scene on Monday that he had only driven because he wanted to make sure to get to the driving test on time.

His test was immediately called off. The man now faces an investigation for driving without a license. Police also opened an investigation of the car’s owner.

A new coronavirus variant found in 22 cases in South Africa is a “reason for concern”, according to researchers.

Three cases of the variant - B.1.1.529 - have also been found in Botswana and there has been one case in Hong Kong, in a patient who had recently visited South Africa.

Scientists have flagged the variant’s unusually high levels of mutations, particularly in the spike protein, which the virus uses to infect cells.

Professor Tulio De Oliveira, director of the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP), said the variant had a “very unusual constellation of mutations” and was a "reason for concern" in South Africa.

Unlike other variants, including delta, which is now dominant globally, and beta, which was detected by Prof de Oliveira’s team in South Africa earlier this year, the new variant has not yet been officially classified as a variant of concern.

The Trump Organization has reportedly reached a deal to sell its prized Washington hotel for $375m (£279m).

Under the planned sale, the Trump International will be renamed the Waldorf Astoria and managed by the Hilton group, according to reports.

Last month, a US congressional probe found the hotel lost more than $70m during Donald Trump's presidency.

Boeing has agreed a settlement with the families of the 157 people who died in the Ethiopia 737 Max crash in 2019.

The plane maker accepts liability for their deaths, according to court documents in Chicago.

In return, families of the victims will not seek punitive damages from the company.

Lawyers for the victims' families said Boeing would still be held "fully accountable", welcoming the agreement as a significant milestone.

The agreement opens the way for families outside the US, in countries such as Ethiopia and Kenya, to claim compensation through the US courts, rather than in their home countries, which might be more difficult and result in lower payments.

A number of passengers have been injured in a crash between two trains near Salisbury.

The collision happened near London Road with police, the fire service, paramedics and British Transport Police at the scene.

About 12 people are thought to have been injured and one of the drivers is believed to be trapped in their cab.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue declared the crash a "major incident" and 50 firefighters are in attendance.

Mayan artifacts discovered along train construction route in Mexico.

Archaeologists say they have discovered hundreds of Mayan artifacts, including ceramic vessels and burial sites, along the route of a train construction project in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

Researchers have so far discovered nearly 2,500 pre-Hispanic structures, 80 burial sites and thousands of vessels and fragments along the route of the "Maya Train," Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) announced in a statement Thursday.

The artifacts were discovered with the help of GPS georeferencing, satellite topographic images and LIDAR sensors in the periphery of just one of the sections of the project, which runs from the cities of Palenque, in Chiapas to Escárcega, in Campeche.

Discoveries ranged from mounds to bases with complex architecture, INAH archaeologists Ileana Echauri Pérez and Iliana Ancona Aragón said. The pair also worked with INAH investigator Silvianne Boucher Le Landais.

MONROE, La. (AP) — Growing up in the piney backwoods of northern Louisiana, where yards were dotted with crosses and the occasional Confederate flag, Jacob Brown was raised on hunting, fishing and dreams of becoming a state trooper.

According to a report in the Washington Post, allies and lawyers employed by Donald Trump set up what was called a "command center" in a Washington D.C. hotel the week of the Jan 6th Capitol riot from which they coordinated efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

They took the decision to ban or suspend Mr Trump after the January riots, which followed a speech in which he made baseless claims of electoral fraud.

The Trump Media & Technology Group will merge with blank check company Digital Acquisition Corp to make TMTG a publicly-listed company.

The way the test works is by identifying whether or not the virus is active, in a similar way to how a flower bud can appear opened or closed.

If the spike in the virus is active, the bud would be open as it would use this to enter human cells. If it is closed, then this would mean the virus is inactive, and the person would not be infectious.

PHOENIX, Sept 24 20211:19 AM BST (Reuters) - Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden in Arizona's most populous county, a review of results by his allies in the Republican Party has reaffirmed, capping a widely panned effort spurred by Trump's false claims of voter fraud.

Arizona Senate President Karen Fann, the Republican who paved the way for the so-called "full forensic audit" of 2.1 million ballots in Maricopa County, said the review's overall vote tally matched the initial results in November.

"Truth is truth, numbers are numbers," Fann said at a Senate hearing on the review, which found only small variations, yielding 99 additional votes for Biden and 261 fewer votes for Trump. "Those numbers were close, within a few hundred."

The conclusion will dismay Trump supporters who had pushed for the review, many in the expectation that it would prove his unfounded assertions that he was robbed of re-election due to orchestrated fraud. So far no such proof has been produced either by Trump or his backers.

expese, an independent third-party e-discovery firm (the "eDiscovery Firm") to oversee the
identification, collection, and review of electroñicãlly stored infor=etion ("ESI") responsive to
OAG's ebpoeñas. The eDiscovery Firm shall be chosen by the Trump Organization, subject to
the approval of OAG, such approval to not be uñreasonably withheld.

Sept 21 (Reuters) - Changes to the main U.S. flood insurance program will raise rates for 77% of policyholders, according to a new study issued on Tuesday, although property owners in some poorer neighborhoods will see premiums decrease.

The study by the QuoteWizard unit of financial services provider LendingTree Inc (TREE.O) reviewed price changes due for the roughly 5 million participants in the National Flood Insurance Program, set up in 1968.

Under the new "Risk Rating 2.0" system from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) taking effect Oct. 1, new premiums will be based on a property's value, risk of flooding and other factors, rather than simply on a home's elevation.

Meant to account for climate-change-driven shifts like increasing flood frequency, the new plans also will make the program more equitable, said Nick VinZant, QuoteWizard senior research analyst.

In the past, insurance policy has been vulnerable to political pressure. In 2012, Congress rolled back some of the subsidies in the flood insurance program, only to reverse course two years later after voters objected to higher costs.

But the growing threat of climate change may make that kind of intervention less successful, said Roy Wright, who ran the flood insurance program until 2018 and now runs the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety.

“We cannot hide the truth of this increasing risk,” Mr. Wright said. “We shouldn’t hide it. Tell people the truth.”

Leaked test results suggest the government and construction industry had early evidence of the dangers posed by cladding, 13 years before the Grenfell Tower fire.

Panels, commonly used on buildings in the UK, failed fire tests carried out in 2004.

The results, marked "Commercial in confidence", were circulated within an industry advisory group.

They were recently passed to the BBC and, until now, never made public.

Five cladding systems were tested, including one with aluminium panels, although the primary aim was not to assess the risk of particular designs

The aluminium and plastic cladding at Grenfell has been blamed for spreading the fire.

Two were constructed from high pressure laminate (HPL) boards, formed from wood, or paper fibre, widely used on modern apartment blocks in the UK.

In the tests, all five cladding systems were judged to have failed against "proposed performance criteria".

Most of the tests were carried out without using "fire breaks" - extra components which should be fitted to block the spread of flames.

The latest lawsuit filed against Stone was by seven Capitol police officers, who allege he was among those responsible for the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Other defendants include former President Trump, Rudy Giuliani and Alex Jones.
The suit, filed in August, accuses Stone of disseminating false claims of election fraud that ultimately led to the attack on the Capitol, as well as promoting and helping to fundraise for the "Stop the Steal" rally that preceded the attack.
"Trump's and his co-conspirators’ repeated cries of election fraud caused many of his supporters, including other Defendants, to plan to employ force, intimidation, and threats on his behalf to keep him in office, should he lose the election," the suit reads.
The officers are seeking punitive damages from the defendants, with the amount to be determined by a jury should it go to trial.
Stone was served just days before a Sept. 18 rally in D.C. meant to support the insurrectionists who attacked the Capitol in January. Law enforcement officials have ramped up security ahead of this event, re-erecting a seven-foot fence around the main Capitol building and installing high-tech security cameras for better view of the area.
Around 700 people are expected to be in attendance at the so-called "Justice for J6" rally.

TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) — California authorities are investigating why a man found passed out in a car had more than 300 unopened mail-in ballots for the gubernatorial recall election.

The man was arrested Aug. 16 after being found in a store parking lot in Torrance, police said.

Investigators with the Torrance police special investigations division, the U.S. Postal Service and Los Angeles County district attorney’s public integrity unit were trying to determine how the ballots ended up in the suspect’s vehicle and what his intent was in having them, police said in a Facebook statement Monday.

Sgt. Mark Ponegalek told KABC-TV that the ballots were unopened and had not been tampered with.

The man was a felon who had drugs, a loaded firearm, thousands of pieces of mail, a scale and multiple California driver licenses and credit cards in other people’s name, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, was arrested for investigation of weapons, narcotics and forgery violations.

Replacement ballots will be sent out, police said.
