Hello Everyone,

I am interested in getting a new computer that will use the GPU for more compulations then my standard computer I currently have which is just a Gateway 2.8 dual core with 3 gb of ram.

I saw a quad core at best buy with a raedon card in it for $400.00 would this be a good machine to buy or should I look at something else with another card in it?

And if you have a home built, do you have a list of what you used that I could work from?

I would like to stay under the $500.00 mark for this project.

I have read a few threads about how some have gotten 10x the work with one computer and would like to start taking advantage of this through the use of a single or double GPU unit.

Thank You all for the help

Hello all,

I am looking to build a new computer (my first home built)and would like to know .. If I build a new machine and want to take advantage of the new GPU's ability to crunch more data for various projects then a standard Windows computer using just a Cpu, will a computer use both the GPU and the CPU(S) on a machine or only use the GPU with the new software made to run on Boinc projects?

I ask as I am not clear about that and wondered if it only uses GPU then I would not go out of my way to build a high end quad as it would not use the Cpu but if it does use both Gpu and Cpu, going with a quad would make sense with a good Gpu over just the gpu and single or dual core.

Any help - thoughts on this to help me out?

Also, anyone build a good machine that would be willing to send me a detail list of the parts they have used to make their machine??

I am thinking no more then $500.00 is where I would be good.

Also, has anyone looked at the quad that best buy is selling for $489.00, is that a deal for using a quad and gpu for seti and einstein or would I be better off building?

THANK YOU ALL in advance to the help/adice.

Jim
