Post: These are the error messages that are displayed... All these failures have the same thread -- that of an error code -106 Temporarily failed download of '(file)': '(error-code)' A temporary failure because the Data Server dropped the connection due to an I/O error. The Data Server referred to in this message is part of the BOINC system that builds and distributes updated files and Work Units for processing. Bottom line here: if you are on dial-up, you may have a noisy telephone line. If via your cable TV circuit, there is possibly a line amplifier going bad - complain either to your phone company or your cable company as applicable to your use ... (edited for syntax) |

Post: Laptops seem to be somewhat slower and comparable desktop models. The Dell unit will probably run in the 6-7 hour/unit range, and the Toshiba slightly slower (7-7.5 hour). What kind of results are you actually getting?? |

Post: Hhmmm -- My Dell Gx110s put out 2-3 WUs a day each if allowed to run 24/7 on SETI alone. You might want to recheck your P4, cuz my machines are running slightly less than 1gig speed and 256meg RAM (edited for content) |

Post: I've got what could be termed as a case garden (not enough for a farm) Four Dell GX110 sff - clock speeds run from 900Meg to 1Gig - 256meg RAM and 10gig drives. I'm using Windows200 Pro for OS. On these machines, I run a mix of SETIclassic, SETI BOINC, Einstein, Protein Predictor, LHC, PrimeGrid and the Alpha projects Orbit, Lattice and Folding@Home I've not tried ClimatePrediction All the machines have small UPS backups (20 min), so I can shut down smoothly during an extended outage (like Katrina). If anyone has similar machines they wish to dispose of, drop me an e-mail, and I'll be glad to discuss terms ... (edited for syntax) |

I've never noticed a glut of errors like you mention -- Just a thought, are you on dial-up, and if so, have you had your line checked for cross-talk or electrical interference? Might be getting scrambled data before you can even work on it ... |
