Posted 12 Aug 2005 by ![]() Post: @SuperG OK...so money is what we need? If we have 250,000 people crunching packets out there...could we ask that they donate $0.50 a year for the cause. That sounds like $125,000.00 worth of upgrades to me. I think that some of us might even appreciate the work SETI does to actually donate more. Maybe that would create a "For Profit" service. I'm not an accountant so I don't know. As far as people donating Items..I looked at the sponsor page and SETI has sponsors like SUN, NVIDIA, QUANTUM and HP. To me that sounds like you guys have several home run hitters in the line up. Maybe SETI could ask for some upgrades to more than just their servers... I enjoy having my machines crunch packets for SETI. I do beleive that 1 day we will come into contact with other intelligent life in this universe. I just want the search to be a smooth one. Besides...who is to say that E.T. life isn't already here on earth? SuperG |

Posted 12 Aug 2005 by ![]() Post: We have a backlog so be patient..... That’s actually funny; although, I prefer lettuce to the salad...you know...less fattening...:) I realize that comparing these Sun systems to P2s might have been a bit off but I suppose that I should have made the post more geared towards the actual age of the servers. I think I may have faltered there too. I have older Xeon units running as “doitall†servers in different businesses too and they can handle the workload quite easily. If SETI is getting backlogged due to directory structure and Ethernet then what will it take to get these issues resolved. It seems every time I am checking status or pending credit, I am reading about some failure that is really testing you or about how the scheduled outages are getting harder to recover from. If it takes longer to recover than the time between outages then you might need to tap Sun on the shoulder again or even ask Intel for some donations. It is nice to see that you actually do have a server that is faster than 440MHz even if it has Opteron CPUs. How long would it take to re-create the directory structure so as it does not slow you down and…can you fix your Ethernet issues while this is taking place? I think most of us know that there are a lot more factors involved than just CPU speed here. If we all know that then why does it take so long to implement solutions? We know we need bandwidth, CPU power and Storage etc. I know very little about the inner workings of SETI but I know enough to look ahead and formulate a plan to accommodate the expectations and demands of tomorrow. Kind of like a game of chess…always plan a few moves ahead or more. Anyways, I was not trying to offend anybody here. I hope that what I have done is more like create a desire to do better. It’s easy for 1 SETI cruncher to get impatient and for that I apologize. Maybe some of us out here in crunching land might be able to lend a hand or even pass on some good ideas. Regards, SuperG |

Posted 11 Aug 2005 by ![]() Post: We have a backlog so be patient..... I think everybody on this SETI project has been patient... I may be mistaken but I thought it said in the Server Status section that you guys are running nothing faster than p2-450 machines. kosh: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 2 GB RAM) klaatu: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 2 GB RAM) koloth: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 1 GB RAM) kryten: Sun E3500 (6 x 400MHz Sparc, 6 GB RAM) galileo: Sun E3500 (6 x 400MHz Sparc, 6 GB RAM) milkyway: Sun U60 (2 x 400MHz Sparc, 1 GB RAM) penguin: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 2 GB RAM) philmor: Sun U10 (1 x 350MHz Sparc, 1 GB RAM) sagan: Sun E450 (4 x 400MHz Sparc, 2.5 GB RAM) Even if they are duals or quads or better, maybe since SETI has become so popular you should consider upgrading the lot of them to faster machines. The hardest working machines should definately get upgraded. These machines were fast enough in the past but not anymore. Considering that BUS speed and cache size is so important, I think these old 100MHz BUS speed machines should be swapped out! What would it take to get these old machines replaced? I thought I should get my 2 cents in as I have over 800 Work units to be processed! Thanks http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=7839025 |
