Hi, Thanks for the response OzzFan,

Problems all started when I checked this machine 1 morning back at the beginning of March.. checked the "Tasks" for their status like every other day and found that everything was marked: "Computation Error" Sadly there were probably 60 WUs. After that I could not get WUs to download and this PC sat idle for about 3 days or so.

I was reading the forums and at 1 point read to detach and reatach and then re-apply the location prefs... so I did. Helped a bit, machine downloaded about 20 WUs and thats it. It would not DL anymore until the next day and then another 20 WUs. Anyways, likely that is my "client detached" error right there. I am surprised that it took 2 weeks for that to clear itself up. Oh well.. we all know the systems have been very busy.

Here is a link to 1 of the failed WUs:

WU 1179033360

and here is a link to 1 of the "Completed, Validation inconclusive" WUs.

WU 1173439548

I will wait for a few more days to see what happens with the validating...

Also some trouble with a "client detached" error.

This is all rediculous.. Isn't it obvious by now that we have stumbled upon some real ET signals and the men in Black have showed up to blank the memories of the project people. Anyways...

This is the first time in quite a while that my quads have been idle. Seems strange when I hit crtl-alt-delete click on Performance and find my CPUs at 0% usage. I'm all weirded out over here. What ever will they do?

I wonder if the electrical company will call curious why my demand went down..

hee hee

OK.. back to work...

I'm sorry if this has already been suggested and tried but, have you turned off you throttleing? I used to throttle my quads but they always locked up or else corrupted packets. I dissabled throttleing and all was cleared up.

Hope this helps.

It must be friday I see not one of our systems is doing any Seti work!! You can count on, when theirs a long week end, the Seti server well be down! Bet the farm and the house on that it's a sure thing! And I'm not a betting man but I would bet that!! The funny thing is I have a web server built in 1997, a dual Pentium Pro 200MHz system with 2 9Gig SCSI H/Ds' running FreeBSD 2.something that has never been off and never shut down and wroking for 3,000+ days with not one break down, but them $100,000 SUN systems with 40 Hard Drives and 10Gig of RAM you guys run, every other week end it's down?? whats up with that?? Oh well I told I would bitch if I came in and found our systems on and doing nothing so theirs my bitch.

"Reverend", you sure know how to use irreverent language. And checking your posts, you have been known to complain before. Often.

You might help your cause if you maintained a small cache of work units, and if you had a back-up project. Since your main interest is SETI, you could even consider SETI Beta as your backup; it does have work at the moment. (These points have been made by others. Often.)

The SETI servers are not down at the moment. (I have managed to snare a few work units during the past 10 hours.) As explained by Matt, they're straining under a heavy load brought about by a convergence of adverse circumstances. They therefore cannot keep up with the demand. As Martin points out, demand is the essential difference between your setup and that of SETI@home.

He has a point though. Seems to be the long weekends when these strange problems occur. Of course I can't prove that.. just seems that way.

Anyways, there is no point in complaining about these little outages. The servers will be up when they are up. Some things just take time.

I upgraded 1 of my PCs to a C2Q 6600 from a P4 2.53GHz. Then found out that the splitters were down.. lol.. ran out of cached WUs in less than 2 hours.

Anyways, good luck getting that index copied over. Hopefully you can get those splitters back up for a few hours today so I can download another 4 days worth of WUs.

Cheers

I have the same problem. I have a Windows XP Home, 3.4Gh HT, Memory 2.5 Gb and disk space of 1 Tb. I am not on a server, I am a single user. I run only S@H. As suggested, I set the CPU to 100%. I have not used the threading utility. For me, I am not sure it really is necessary.

I do not need to repeat all the details said in this thread. I, too get message of "Restarting Task...". I have yet to complete one unit of work for S@H in quite some time. I would like to continue, but many days, weeks or whatever of procesing time have been wasted.

I need help. I request a reply from SETI. I may need to give up processing seti.

Thanks.

Hi,Could you please try what John McLeod VII suggested here:

Let me know if you would like the file I created and used.

Please post a portion of the message file that is created so we may have a better idea of what is happening. Are you running any custom SETI apps? What version of Boinc are you running? Have you recently installed any new or updated your antivirus software?

Unfortunately, response times are affected.

I am really surprised to hear this. My own tests have shown that response time is affected in the microseconds range and thus not enough to really worry about. I work as an IT Admin at an Intermediate Care facility for the Mentally Ill and I have BOINC on their machines (with proper permission from the General Manager) without any lag.

In this industry I have learned to not let anything really surprise me.

The lag might have something to do with SQL or something else. The lag was expected when I originally installed the science app. and thus is not a big deal. It just gets to be a bit of a pain when people start complaining, I turn off the app. and then everything starts working ok again.

Anyways, to each their own...

Being the boss, I really don't have time to listen to it..:)

The science app runs at the lowest priority, giving all standard apps CPU time over itself. There should be no slowdown in the response time of the computer. You should try it an a few machines to see for yourself.

Actually, I have tried it and that is why the throttleing is a
must have. In theory it is a great concept to have the science app run at the lowest priority thus giving everything else the higher priority and minimizing response times. Unfortunately, response times are affected. I have found that a throttle set at ~75% has provided the best response times. Of course I don't pay attention to milliseconds or microseconds but ultimately how often I get called into the users office for unexplainable application lag etc.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks for all the great help.

When I used to crunch on a regular basis, Threadmaster was the way to go if one wanted to limit the cpu usage. Setting it up was always simple though as I always set the maximum cpu usage of any app to 75% and also set the threashhold for 30 seconds. So if any app asked for more than 75% of the cpu for more than 30 seconds it automatically got throttled. Worked great.

None of my desktops are having trouble running at 100%. I have a couple of P4s and Athlons that I am throttleing just to increase the responsivness when using office apps and internet etc. Otherwise the employees might start complaining. Being the boss, I really don't have time to listen to it..:)

I can't beleive how fast this C2D and C2Q are crunching.. holy crapola..

Thanks again.

OK.. so that seems to have cleared it up. Any idea as to why the throttleing seems to be a function of time instead of power? Or why these Duo and Quad CPUs do not like the throttleing? Should I use Threadmaster to throttle instead of the built in method?

TIA

WOW.. This Q6600 is pumping out the packets now.. :) I have to assume that the problem is with the CPU throttleing. Since I set the CPU usage to 100%, Boinc has not crapped out. I will continue monitoring and update again tomorrow.

Thanks, I will try to figure that out asap..

OK.. I have the config file loaded and collecting data. I reset the CPU throttle to 100% so that I could avoid a huge log file with the constant stopping and starting. If the issues go away then I suppose that was the problem. I certainly hope not.. Anyways, I will post the messages soon.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Monty,

I have had this happen to a couple of my machines too. I found that when running Boinc with 2k3 Server SP1, I would get the occational lockup/reboot. I didn't notice if it was having issues during download or not but did find that by setting the maximum number of CPUs to 1 solved most of my problems. This, of course, set the work load to approx 25%. By doing this it eased the workload and thus reduced the temperature of the processors. Hope this helps.
