So it's mystery, and I hate mysteries when it comes to computers (since they just shouldn't happen, by definition). ;-)

lol...I know...it keeps me awake at night!

Case in point:

Richard Haselgrove wrote:
"the only worry I have about the messages in your log is - why on earth was the user active at 2:06 AM and 4:44 AM - don't you sleep in your part of the world???!!!"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm comparing the dupes and even some of those the same size (5KB) show appreciable differences.

(Thinking caps on?)

btw...I seem to recall (but don't hold me to it) that when I copied the saved XML files to the "new" BOINC Directory I was asked if I wanted to "replace" those that were already in there and I said "Yes to all"...but apparently "new" files were created instead?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, here's an interesting question that just came to mind...

why are the XML files showing "date Modified" as 12/6/2006? (that's TODAY of course)
...when I have NOT done anthing to those files (e.g. edits)?
...and notice that these "12/6/2006" XML's are "single-dots"...
...while the "older" XML's are "double-dots".
duh!...I guess it means that each time I log on (actually stop using my computer since BOINC only works while I'm away) something changes in that file.

The plot thickens!

Telstar

***Guys! I'll be away for a couple of hours...I'll check back at that time.
Hopefully this effort that y'all are putting into this mystery is going to help someone else down the road...then it will all have been worth it.

Ok, I suggest cautionary moves here....because (I refer back to something I pointed out in my earlier posts:

    account_*.xml File
    statistics_*.xml file,
    scheduler_request_*.xml
    scheduler_reply.xml
    plus...
    client_state.xml
(basically, ALL of the XML files)

Saving these to a temp Folder turned out to be my salvation...
because...I was NEVER able to successfully attach my SAH Project to the new version of BOINC (would NOT accept my email or password)...

Let's think about this while I compare those .xml files in my Directory.
Deleting the "wrong" one might interfere with my ability to contact SAH.

(It never was determined WHY my email and password were rejected during the installation of v5.4.11 and attaching SAH...only that I was able to by "replacing" those XML files with my saved ones from v5.2.13)

Could it be, that you now have to account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml files in your Boinc directoy (one named "account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml" and one named "account_setiathome.berkeley.edu..xml" <- two dots at the end!)?
My guess is that, while Boinc is scanning the directory for account files, Boinc finds both of them (due to its fault tolerance) and thinks, they are for the same account/project.
Alinator, how about that?

Hold the phone guys!

I believe "good catch" Andy may have something here!

I'm not doing anything to my BOINC (Directory) XML files until we all agree on what has to be edited/deleted.

This behaviour is normal by default, but you can fine-tune it by going to 'Your account' on the navigation bar above this forum, and choosing the link for 'General preferences'. There are lots of things to play with, but your question concerns nos. 2 and 4 in the top section: 'Do work while computer is in use?' and 'Leave applications in memory while suspended?'.
I guess you have 'no' for both of these.

You are correct sir!
I've now changed no. 4 to "yes": "Leave applications in memory while suspended".
Seems that should take care of it (I'll check Messages later on).
Since my computer is not a "muscle" machine I still prefer BOINC to do it's work when I'm NOT at my computer to save resources for other tasks and avoid that "sluggishness" you've aluded to.

So this might take a little bit of time to get to the bottom of, if you don't mind bearing with it.
Alinator

Take your time Alinator, I'll check back later on.

That error line has NOT shown itself since the one I posted that I received yesterday (at 2:20:50 p.m.[PST]) so, it's been almost 20 hours or so since I received it, so this doesn't seem to be a major issue since it's not recurring with any frequency and doesn't seem to be inhibiting BOINC or the SAH server from doing their job.

Just while you're at it, please have a look at my latest Messages and see if anything stands out as odd.

My only concern is on the lines where it says in parentheses"
"Pausing task xxxxxxxxxx (removed from memory)"

Is this ("removed from memory") normal behavior?

Thanks again Alinator,

I think John was saying you have a duplicate of the:

<project>
|
|
|
</project>

element content for SAH in the client_state file.
Alinator

Ok guys, wanna take a stab at checking this for me?

I converted client_state.xml to a Text(.txt) document so I could upload it to one of my file-sharing sites that allows me to upload this type of file.

I believe I've "EDITED OUT" those I've been cautioned about and the file is now benign.

I'm not going to do anything to the actual XML file until advised to do so.

client_state.txt

Please take a look and let me know what's causing the error and what I should edit out of the XML.

Thank you,

Telstar

It looks like you have two of something. You probably have two sections in the client_state.xml file that point to SETI@Home.

Hi John,

It's been about nine hours since that line in BOINC>Messages, but it did appear before that a couple of times though.

I looked through client_state.xml and don't see anything that stands out as obvious duplicates, (course, I'm not sure what to look for either).

I could post a link to the file but, doesn't that file also contain info that would compromise my security?

Can you tell me exactly which lines I could check and I'll take another look?
...I sure don't want to go deleting anything unless I'm sure.

Hi again Alinator,

A couple of loose ends...

1) I read your new thread re: "Tips for folks..." and regarding your advice (Item #1) on info that a user should not post...I refer back to a comment I made earlier in this thread:

Do you think new visitors could make the same mistake I did?
Just wondering if this (misconstrue) could have or should have been addressed for further clarification.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My BOINC Manager and connection to SAH seems to be working well and Messages indicates good communication back and forth to their server...BUT...I'm seeing this new error occasionally in Messages and wonder if it should be addressed:

Any thoughts about this?

>>>SUCCESS!!<<<

Or, so it would appear to this point (about six(6) hours of BOINC running undisturbed)....

But, not the result of the "traditional" repair methodology we have discussed.

Synopsis:

>If you recall, I had saved these XML data storage files from my original BOINC Manager Directory "before" starting the first clean uninstall of v5.2.13 and upgrading to v5.4.11:
    account_*.xml File
    statistics_*.xml file,
    scheduler_request_*.xml
    scheduler_reply.xml
    plus...
    client_state.xml
(basically, ALL of the XML files)

Saving these to a temp Folder turned out to be my salvation...
because...I was NEVER able to successfully attach my SAH Project to the new version of BOINC (would NOT accept my email or password)...

Only after EDITING (to remove that "period") from the (SETI@home)url: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu./ in ALL of those .XML files, and then copying them to the NEW BOINC v5.4.11...did BOINC Manager>Messages show NO indication of any "RED" alerts (as you can see in the image above).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Editing process:
In opening the XML files in Notepad in order to do the editing,
I used the Tools>Edit>Find what>Replace with>Replace all function...
Find what: berkeley.edu./ (note the "period")
Replace with: berkeley.edu/
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you to all of you who jumped aboard here to offer your assistance, advice and expertise...you were all a great inspiration to me to finally get this thing resolved.

I really appreciate ALL of your help and guidance.

There is always something to be learned during the process of "fixing" and I've learned a lot, especially the importance of saving important files as backup before proceding on any major upgrades..."just in case".

Hopefully, time will show that this has been indeed a permamanent fix (Murphy's Law?).

If you really want to try (this is NOT for the faint hearted).

There is a directory in the BOINC directory that needs to change names.
The Account_*.xml File, Statistics_*.xml file, scheduler_request_*.xml, the scheduler_reply.xml all need to change names.

You need to edit all occurrences in client_state.xml.

I think that this is the entire list. The simplest thing to do is to search all files in the boinc directory for the wrong name and change it to the correct one. You need to change all file names and directory names that have the wrong name to the correct one.
good luck.

Thanks for your input John.

Yep, I've been trying to think this thing through but my limited troubleshooting experience re: BOINC is holding me back.

The latest thing I tried, is what was suggested in the latest Messages...

BOINC Messages wrote:
When convenient, detach this project,

So I...
1) Clicked on BOINC Manager>Projects>Detach
(well, that wiped away all the Project info of course, leaving a blank window)

2) Clicked on BOINC Manager>Tools>Attach to Project

At this time I was prompted to enter the Project url.
According to Messages...
BOINC Messages wrote:
...then reattach to http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/

Upon doing this I was prompted for my email address and password...

Upon entering those I received the now all too familiar:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, so...based on your instructions, I presume you agree the url I'm using is incorrect?
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu./

and that the correct one is:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
***WITH THE "PERIOD" REMOVED
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And your instructions are for me to go to these XML files and change all the URL's to remove that "period"?

account_*.xml File
statistics_*.xml file,
scheduler_request_*.xml
scheduler_reply.xml

plus...
client_state.xml

Does this mean that my email and password would then be accepted?

I don't want to proceed unless I'm sure I'm doing the right thing.

Thanks much,

Telstar

THANK YOU MODERATORS FOR THE EDIT !!
(I received an email explaining what action was taken.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, where are we?

After a few hours, I clicked "Allow new tasks".

Here's my Messages at the point (on the bottom) where activity was suspended (user active)...

I'm all for a re-install but,

I know my email and password (good that they are) are going to be rejected when I try and attach SAH...

Maybe it's the result of that infamous "period"....

What can I edit to remove that period that would allow BOINC Manager to accept my password and email??

Or...I'm listening for any other ideas.

<edit2> One thing to try before the reinstall would be to do a project reset once the current work was completed.

If I have to do clean uninstall again, I'll probably have the same problem (where the workaround was for me to use my "saved" XML files which will still carry with them that error)...

I'll take a look when I get back.

Yup. remember the failing mission to Mars (or was it Jupiter/Venus?) where they screwed up inches and centimeters? LOL

BTW: the period/point is/was wrong, should work fine without.

Yep, you're probably referring to the failed Mars Polar Landing Mission (1999?)

Ok, I'm just going to:

1) Close BOINC Manager

2) edit out that period in account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml

3) save the change.

All should be well.

I'll check back to Messages later on and see what it says.

Any new information, ya'all please post (I'll be checking).
Same with me, I'll post if anything goes awry.

Thanks all....

Yep, because the period is telling the parser to expect that another domain element follows. It works now because the parser is smart enough to realize it has enough info to complete the request as submitted, but it would cause a failure if the URL really needed 4 specifiers to define it uniquely.

Alinator

Ok, so here's the plan...

1) Go to "account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml"

<master_url>http://setiathome.berkeley.edu./</master_url>

2) Edit the file by removing the "period".

Anything else I should do?

What about this by Alinator:

Ok, here's what my feeble little mind is picking up:

Messages indicates that the "correct" address is:
-------------------------------------------
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/

The one that appears in Jacob's suggestion of looking in
the "account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml" file is:
----------------------------------------------------------------
<master_url>http://setiathome.berkeley.edu./</master_url>

And I point out the missing "period" after "edu".

Could it be as simple as that...can a simple "period" alter the

Check this line in your client_state.xml file in the main BOINC directory:
<scheduler_url>http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi</scheduler_url>
You probably need to add the ".ssl.". You'll have to exit BOINC make the edit and restart it.
Alinator

Ok, this is exactly what is there now:
<scheduler_url>http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi</scheduler_url>

And what it's telling me that is correct in Messages is:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/

What would you suggest (before I really screw it up...LOL)?

Also, where in the client_state.xml file would I make that change...that address appears many times (use the Tools>Edit>Replace function?).
Only on the "<scheduler...." line?
