No Gort!! No "Klaatu Barada Nikto"!! Uncapie Goes Postal On THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL Remake Script!!

Yo! I'm Uncapie!

Everyone has seen the stand alone, classic 1951 film, "The Day the Earth Stood Still" directed by Robert Wise starring Michael Rennie as "Klaatu". It was based on Harry Bates' "Farewell To the Master" and is science fiction at its best.

Now they're remaking it in Vancouver. Keanu Reeves is in the lead role as the visitor from another planet with a warning for Earth.

Why?

What was wrong with the original that merits a remake?

After I read the script, I threw it against the wall.

BEWARE SPOILERS!!!

The story starts out with a promising beginning. Astronauts aboard the space shuttle discover a glassy sphere, which they recover through their bay doors.

No sooner as they do, the sphere (as if it has a will of its own) lets itself out, joining thousands of other spheres that head towards the surface of the Earth.

That's only the first two pages. Now it gets worse.

Scientist Dr. Helen Benson (portrayed by Jennifer Connolly) has a whiny son, Jacob. He's not as interesting as Bobby Benson in the original, and I'm real tired of the dysfunctional family theme. Jacob plays too many "violent" video games, Helen scolds him for it. She might as well put a dress on this kid and get it over with. Yet, they live in a violent world - we discover that Jacob's father was killed in Iraq.

An enormous energy sphere shows up in New York, and good ol' Klaatu makes his appearance. The entire army and air force are ready to stomp his butt if he gets out of line.

Of course he gets shot, and we do get a robot to come out of the ship. But its nothing like "Gort" - nor is it as fierce as "Gort."

Its called the "Totem". It walks around on all fours, does its destructo-ray stuff, and stands upright like a totem pole when its finished.

Oooooh, I'm soooooo scared.

Cut to the chase.

Klaatu enters the hospital. He escapes in a military uniform. There is no allusion to the "Major Carpenter" or "Carpenter" name, which is the subtext in the original film (Klaatu was a metaphor for Christ).

Klaatu befriends Helen and Jacob, enlisting their aid to meet with a "Mr. Wu" who is from Klaatu's home planet. Wu who has been monitoring Earth's behavior for eighty years - at a McDonald's of all places.

Okay, logic problem here.

If Klaatu is sent from his planet to destroy the Earth, why do we need Mr. Wu to tell us that it needs obliterating if he's already here? What? He couldn't do the job himself? How did he get here in the first place? Where's his space ship? Why wait eighty years? Why would Klaatu have to travel a hundred million light years for Mr. Wu to tell him that - when Klaatu is already doing the job he's sent on (coming from his home planet to destroy our world)?

Turns out that...because of Global Warming (and the destruction of our own planet with industrial waste and pollution)....the other galaxies deemed that we are not fit to survive. The glass spheres they sent down were to collect land and sea animal specimens to take back to their planet for study.

Visions ran through my head when I was reading this script: episodes of the sixties versions of "Ultraman" or "Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot." Maybe "Prince of Space: Part II" with Klaatu as "Krang-Kor." "Ha...ha...ha..."

And no, the immortal words, "Klaatu Barada Nicto" are never uttered. Ever.

Needless-to-say, Earth goes through a violent energy field released through Klaatu's ship (wait a minute - wasn't Gort supposed to be the ultimate bad ass in this story?). But Earth survives, with Klaatu giving we humans a second chance as he dies - telling us that we must change our ways in order to survive, in a delivery that would rival Steven Segal's speech at the end of "On Deadly Ground."

Maybe the title song from "Godzilla Vs. the Smog Monster" would be more appropriate.

And you can bet they'll be no Theramin music either. Maybe a few tunes by Dogstar, though.

Gone are the interaction between Bobby and Klaatu at the Lincoln Memorial, the Arlington Cemetery, and the visit to the space ship.

Gone is the scene with Bobby discovering Gort taking out the two guards - and finding out that Carpenter is an alien.

Gone is the Hugh Marlowe character.

Professor Barnhardt is in it, but his role is limited. Plus, he gets killed. Why? He was the voice of reason. This makes no sense.

Yes, there is a scene where everything in the world stops for an hour and chaos erupts, but it was done in the original much better...and with style.

There are so many books out there just begging to be made into films, why does Fox have to remake a classic? Why not film Joe Haldeman's,"Forever Wars"? Or "Alfred Bester's "The Stars My Destination"? Or Arthur C. Clarke's "Rendezvous With Rama"? Or "Childhood's End"? Or the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson? Or quit stalling Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" as a movie?

I have no hopes for this as a film. It can't hold a candle to the timeless original. Call it something else, but don't call it "Day the Earth Stood Still."

hey everyone
Just thought i would ask your guys/gals opinions on this. Would you rather see a stock bumper on it (current one), European bumper or no bumpers at all

Euro bumpers because they streamline the car and with the right ones they don't look just hung on like the stockers. Match them to your paint job too.

Well one of the first things you have to learn is how to make your links clickable. Lots of people are inherently lazy and don't bother copying and pasting. It's not terribly difficult.

More Pics of my car

It looks like there is a little ouch on the left hand side of the hood (bonnet).
But it looks like a clean car otherwise, even the engine looks fairly clean.
and with only 196632 Kilometers (122,181)miles it is a great buy.

can you circle where you see the little dent, as im going over the car with a fine tooth comb and dont see where you are seeing it

I think he means the red writing on the corner of the hood.

Midnights so dreary, tired and weary.
Silently pondering volumes extolling all by-now obsolete lore.

An ominous vibrating sound disturbing my chamber's antedoor.
"This", I whispered quietly, "I ignore".

This is actually very easy ;)

UC Berkeley begins felling disputed trees

Sep 6, 12:38 AM (ET)

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - The University of California, Berkeley has begun cutting down trees at the center of a dispute over its plans to clear the area to make way for a new sports center.

Protesters sitting in a nearby redwood tree on Friday refused to move.

University spokesman Dan Mogulof says school officials want to make it difficult for the tree protesters to remain, although they do not want anyone to get hurt or to get into a confrontation.

"The last thing we want to do is to get to that forcible extraction," he said.

The tree felling will continue over the next few days, Mogulof said.

He added that university officials have not decided what they will do if the protesters do not come down peacefully.

Protesters swatted at the workers in cherry pickers with sticks. Officials say a worker was hit on the head by a bottle from the tree-sitters' perch but was able to keep trimming.

"It's surreal to see the grove finally be cut down, after so much energy and effort and spirit was put into protecting it," Daria Garina, a UC Berkeley junior and supporter of the tree-sitters, told the San Francisco Chronicle. "It's tragic and awful." .

The cutting began after the California Court of Appeal on Thursday denied a request from two citizens groups for an injunction barring construction of the athletic training facility. The groups say they plan to take the case to the state Supreme Court.

Nancy Pelosi Invests In Energy Scheme and Water Grab By T. Boone Pickens

August 11, 2008

William R. Collier Jr. Upadaria@yahoo.com
The American Freedomist

Nancy Pelosi may have an ulterior motive for opposing an ALL OF THE ABOVE energy plan, and for refusing to allow a vote on such a plan!

An overlooked story last November shows that the T. Boone Pickens plan involves the private control of water, which Pickens wants to be able to sell to big cities via giant water pipelines which will be built on land seized under eminent domain.

How did he do this? He did this by pushing through a “water district” which consists of only 8 acres of land and then applying eminent domain to expand that district and seize land from local ranchers which, in the end, puts vital water resources under his private control.

The Sierra Club, which you might think has an opinion that means something to Nancy Pelosi who just wants to “save the world”, had this to say, “We have real concerns about private control of water,” said Ken Kramer, director of the Texas Sierra Club. “Water is a resource, yet in some respects it is a commodity. It’s as essential to human life as air. That puts water in a different class.”

Pickens plans to sell 200,000 acre-feet from parched West Texas Staked Plains annually. His plan is opposed by water policy planners as economically infeasible. This extensive extraction will affect natural spring flows and the rural Texas Panhandle communities that depend on that water. It will also adversely affect family farming and sustainable development from Texas to South Dakota, according to opponents.

Pickens needs money and he has not been able to find investors to pay for a $110 Billion Bond he wants his new “water authority” to issue, therefore he is piggy-backing the windmill plan on to the water infrastructure development plan to use the money obtained for the wind farms in order to pay for the water infrastructure, which was his original goal.

While these plans were in the works as of November 2007, with the creation of this “water district”, the energy company, CLNE, was offered for public investment in an IPO in May of 2007, an IPO that was not advertised, but which resulted in Nancy Pelosi quickly jumping on board. Nancy Pelosi Purchased between $50,000-$100,000 in CLNE stock on May 25, 2007 apparently on it’s initial public offering.

It is hard to tell if the water scheme is the device being used to seize the land or if the wind turbine scheme is the means by which he will fund the water scheme, but no matter what the case may be, Nancy Pelosi will personally profit from whatever he does as an investor.

Nancy Pelosi is one of the richest members of Congress with a net worth of over US$25 million, which comes primarily from investments a large portfolio of jointly owned San Francisco Bay Area real estate, and, now, of course, stocks in CLNE.

While the stock was initially offered at $14 and is now valued below that amount, the low of $10 in early July of this year is bouncing back, especially in light of ads by Pickens and growing consensus that the Pickens plan will gain support, especially if Pelosi is firmly behind it.

Pelosi and pals COULD be hoisted on theiir own petard if new rules THEY pushed go into effect.
