Reminds me of the first part of how Loki came to my wife and I. Some friends of my mother-in-law found him in their engine compartment at the end of a trip home -- thankfully unharmed.

They looked after him for a while, but he was a kitten, and too rambunctious for them. He was going to be turned over to the local Animal Control, but we agreed to take him on to keep him from that. We had to have him neutered, vetted, almost everything. But he has turned out to be an awesome cat. Playful, affectionate, mischievous, and full of personality.

And because we took on Loki, we decided to get another kitten for him to play with ... and things progressed from there!

I've been away from the forums too long...

I'm under 40, and I saw the bespectacled kitty as John Lennon :P

And the robotic thing doesn't look remotely life-like.

The six we have are all well. Loki continues to alternate between being the most mischievous and the most snuggly, while Keegan's confidence continues to increase in leaps and bounds - he's demanding to be petted a lot more, and he's a lot more aggressive when it comes to trying to be first to get the canned food!

The cutest LOLcat I ever saw!

ah, well that's an easy one for me.. I don't do that whole deal. I have a card that is plenty capable, but I want it to be used for what I bought it for, and that is entirely my choice.

Same here. I tried once to have a game running at the same time as a CUDA WU; it was not pretty. That was one of the factors that led me to brush off GPU computing for the time being.

Kitties are doing well here. Been trying to spend some time doing things like using the dangle toy to play with them (it gets a lot of attention) and so one. One of the older cats has started again with her habit of lying on top of my wife at night - she'll stay there all night - while the shy one is adorably cute when he sits on top of the climbing tree we have!

I think it's just best to abstract it to politicians describing rival politicians...

I've posted the best of the pics from the last month or so in my kitty gallery! You'll find them on the last couple of pages.

The kitties are all well at the moment. Artemis especially seems to have gained a new sense of gusto with life, and none of them seemed to have been upset by the furniture rearranging we had to do while we were decorating the front room. Apollo continues to outgrow his litter-mates, while Loki continues to be by far the most mischievous! Keegan, however, seems to be taking a few leaves from his book...

And welcome back, Mark!

Glad to hear that your elder kitty is doing better!! You didn't say what needed treating, but moving to a new home can be VERY stressful for kitty.

As for the shy one.....you can fix that with a lot of loving attention. Be very gentle with him...he will slowly find that he loves the attention and petting. I have been doing this with my Tigger II for the last couple of months. Once very stand-offish, she now will come up to me looking for affection, which she rarely did before......

Same story with my shy one...Bandit...she usually stayed in the bedroom and rarely came out looking for me, but a few months of extra special pettings, and now she will come out looking for me to say meow and get a little attention.

I think it was some sort of allergy thing. She's had some other problems in the past, some very very serious, so we're more than a bit protective of her. I have to admit my wife does most of the actual vet related care of the cats; I just feed 'em, keep their water fountain clean and filled, and love on 'em as and when they're amenable to it!

We've done our best to be very gentle and loving with the shy one (Keegan), and it has paid off as he is much more trusting of us. Occasional treats, playing with him with the cat lure toy (although rarely stays exclusive to him as it'll draw all the younger ones - one will even do a standing jump of two feet to get to it!) and just making sure he never feels trapped or confined have all helped I'm sure.

Still haven't got the latest pictures off the camera yet. I promise, I'll try and do that during this week...

I'm using the stock cooler with a 965, which is better than the one than comes with the 920 / 940.

Interesting. Didn't know there is a different one just for the 965.

Yep, it's slightly taller, has a blue LED, and mixes copper and aluminium fins. With Seti@Home running on all 8 threads, the CPU is at 56C, which I think is reasonable.

I do have it in a very good case with lots of airflow (3x 140mm fans as input, separate heat zones for HDDs, mainboard and PSU, 140mm and 2x 80mm low RPM fans as exhaust).

Sounds good !!

It has awesome aesthetics as well. Tall, black ... I call it The Monolith for a reason.

I've not done much in the way of checking temperatures, but I have found out that my CPU is happy enough with the amount of heat it's kicking out for it to automatically add 1 to the multiplier for each core.

If you look at your cache, does it appear to be around 750 hours worth (24 hours x 8 threads x 4 days)?

One of our older cats had worried Mir and I for a while, as she wasn't eating much, had lost some weight and wasn't quite acting herself. We got our local vet to check her out, and there were a couple of things that needed treating. Now, she's a lot happier and has regained her old mass. It may have been something triggered by the stress of moving late last summer, so hopefully this indicates that she's finally fully settled in!

The shyest of our younger kitties has also started to be a lot more friendly. Previously, I had to be very careful about how I approached him as he would just scamper away, but he's a lot happier around us big clumsy humans - if I sit on the floor, he'll often be part of the group of kitties that invariably come up to me for playing and petting.

I've taken some more pictures of the kitties, and I aim to upload them to my gallery (link in a previous post of mine in this thread) soonish!

Reasons to skip Microsofts windows 7 beta download

Flawed article:

  • The author states his Macintosh bias at the outset.
  • The author mischaracterises Windows 7 as 'Vista SP2'. Vista SP2 is a separate thing, is already in beta and should be out Q2.
  • The author doesn't seem to understand what 'Beta' status actually entails.
  • The author suggests the beta's expiration date of August is a problem. Microsoft's historical pattern indicates that there'll likely be a Beta 2 before then, and at least one Release Candidate (RC) release before it goes into production.

Yeah, I could approach this with a more tongue-in-cheek viewpoint, but I've had a morning with AV deployment issues, and seeing idiocy like that article just makes me want to dismantle it.

19) Message boards : Cafe SETI : personal opinion on pc vs consoles (Message 851019)

Post:
It wouldn't be too hard to make a PC play like a console; just add the right controllers. Rockband, Wii Fit, and so on - if the controllers could be connected via USB with reliable drivers, then there's no reason why any / all of that software couldn't be ported. Edit: and, of course, modern graphics cards are capable of using HDMI to link to modern massive-screen TVs.

At the moment the trend is to try and marginalise the PC as a gaming platform, and try and use things like exclusive platform deals to try and keep gamers away from alternative platforms. Worse, publishers are pushing developers to try and develop "triple A" titles that are pretty hollow in terms of gameplay and longevity but which have impressive graphics, which make for great hype and preview articles, which helps to drive sales.

I am very, very jaded about the games market these days. Much of the soul and love has gone out of it, driven away when the grey-faced money-driven crowd realised there was plenty of cash to be made by it. There are exceptions, of course, but I don't own a console (although my wife wants a Wii), and I buy very very few titles these days, and never when just launched.

A couple of new milestones for me:

  • 300,000 cobblestones.
  • Top 20 of those who signed up the same day as me.
  • Have reached the approximate worldwide SETI ranking as when I last had multiple computers crunching for me. I've gained 13,000 places in the world ranking since I woke the Monolith in mid-December.

Next goals:

  • 500,000 cobblestones.
  • Top 1000 for the UK - the current #1000 has a shade over 376k cobblestones. While I'm currently living in the USA, Britain is my country of origin and where I lived until just over a year ago.
  • Top 10 of those who signed up on the same day as me (current number 10 has just under 492k).
  • Get under my Jan 2006 world ranking minima of ~21,000 (the current #21,000 has 318,000, so that should be fairly quick).
