I have become interested in the alleged hardware changes coming down the pipe. I think Intel and AMD may be at odds again (finally), given that Intel has dominated the processor market for the last few years.

It looks like AMD is making superior inroads in the CPU, APU and GPU market with their announcement of the 14nm process and possibly a FM3 socket, among other things. Only time will tell.

Personally, I am an AMD fan. This is mostly due to cost, but also due to habit. I am not an Intel/Nvidia basher.

What do you folks see, is it relevant, is it significant?

Mention of hardware not working as well, or, at all, on older systems is a bit of a sick joke. At a stroke, with Vista, MS dropped support in the OS for the humble 'game port' - much to the annoyance of just about everyone who had an MS Sidewinder 'stick with a 'game port' connection - never mind those of us with expensive CH or similar spec 'sticks! For Heaven's sake, even their own hardware became paper-weights! This of course did much for user experience, in a very negative manner and may be why XP is rightfully, still held in high regard by many.

I must admit, I miss my Sidewinder Precision Pro. I used to play MechWarrior 4 until the wee hours of the morning (I do miss Win XP). I am a keyboard/mouse convert now, playing Hawken occasionally.

I haven't installed a Joystick in Windoze 10, not that I've needed it, but are they available and functional?

Anyhow, just my two cents worth...(if that)

Dont get me wrong Louis but your CPU times aren`t that good.
You could do better.

Really not concerned about my CPU times, a substantial jump in RAC would require an intel processor(admittedly). As far as AMD, I am doing well. If you have advice that may help, I am all ears....

That's about what I would expect from the Bulldozer/Piledriver/Excavator/[I swear there's a fourth one, and I can never remember the name of it] shared-FPU architecture, especially if you're running more than 50% of the cores (the example I looked at was ~37k seconds for 2.39% blanked).

I've got a first-gen Bulldozer (6100) at stock speeds (3.3ghz), and I run 50% of the cores to get stable times (otherwise, the elapsed times increase by 20-40%, but overall productivity doesn't increase by that much; essentially, running all six cores yields ~4 cores worth of actual production). You can see here what my Bulldozer manages in the best of conditions (half-utilized, optimized apps).

AMD on this project isn't really all that great. This project heavily favors Intel clock-for-clock, just because of the design differences of the CPU. You might be able to decrease your elapsed times (but not necessarily the overall production) by dropping down to 50% of the CPU cores in BOINC. That would also cut your heat by a bit, and you could probably squeeze more OC out of it, being water-cooled. I'm on air and mine idles at 31C, 38C at 50% load, 47C at 100%.

I have never been an intel fan simply because of the cost. Like most people here, I build my own rigs. It is actually strange that I have only one, I usually have two or three at any given time. Maybe its time to build an intel/NVidia rig.

Currently I am running 4 CPU units and 6 GPU units at a time (normally), depending on AP availability. My CPU temps hover around 42C and my GPUs around 75-80C. I have played with it a lot over the past few weeks, this seems to be my sweet spot.

Correction; 2 CPU units and 6 GPU units...

Again, I have had my own problems with Windoze 10. However, it seems to have settled down. I have made adjustments to my clocks and I haven't had a problem lately. My RAC seems to indicate that in the affirmative. I do not run any third party antivirus (I don't frequent the websites and downloads I did a few years ago). My Rig is stable and powerful, given the hardware I have.

I really don't understand the angst, Windoze Defender and Malwarebytes cover all of the bases for me.

Are the rest of you overthinking your protection, or are you paranoid? I don't know.

I am however thinking about building a Linux system, just for Sh&%$ and giggles. we'll see.

Peace, Merry Christmas and happy crunching.

This rig will run just about anything at high res. All components are at least two years behind the curve...

I haven't tried any of the latest games. Hawken, Titanfall and Mass Effect 3 all run at max....

My point; you don't necessarily need the latest greatest to enjoy your games.

It's been another good run for me. Keeping my rig stable and avoiding lockups has been helpful. Running stock values across the board for now. Comparing my rig to others, it looks as though I should stay around 40K RAC, maybe a bit higher, we'll see.

AFAIK, at 72°C the FuryX clock down a little (from 1050 to 1018 MHz), at 75°C clock down up to 300 MHz and the fan run at highest speed (3000 RPM) (stock liquid cooling).

I searched the web but couldn't find at which temp the fan run faster than 1000 RPM.

At 45°C the fan(s) run at 15 %, this are 1000 RPM.

At which temp the fan start to speed up?

Thanks.

I don't remember for sure, but I think Sapphire Trix and MSI Afterburner both show you the default fan curve, also allowing you to adjust it.

I really don't understand the angst. I have Win 10 Pro, all updates included and have had no problems, lately anyhow. I have turned off all of the tracking and I don't need or use Cortana, on my desktop at least. My phone is a different situation altogether, it also works quite well though.

I have had more problems with the CCC drivers than anything else. They are stable just short of Crimson.

Yes, Win 10 gave me problems in the beginning (I've been in the Insider Program since very nearly the start). Now though, everything seems to be working quite well.

ok,sorry its kinda hard to follow here what the answer to my question is... im running 2 290x's ..2 workloads per card ..currently usuing 14.4 as it seems to be the best for more then 1 WU... do the new crimson drivers work with more then 1 WU? or should i just stay with what i have?

Stay with what you have.

Got to agree, Crimson is a bit buggy on my 280Xs...

I'm looking at going to a Samsung Galaxy Note4 or something like that phone, when I can afford it. I have a Samsung Galaxy Ring now(a CDMA phone), a 4" screen and 3G is a pain in the ass, the Note4 has a 5.7" screen and 4G LTE, of course I'd have to switch to Sprint I think, I'm with Virgin Mobile now, Virgin uses the Sprint network.

Yep, not a phablet fan. I need to be able to put my phone in my pocket. I have guys on the job (electrical construction) who hang huge phones from their hips. I don't see how they do it. Even the Lumia 640 is a little large for my taste. I just came over from a HTC One Mini. I haven't given up on that one yet... It taunts me from the shelf it sits on...

I have a Note 4. It's a tad big for doing stuff with only one hand, but other than that I like it. I had (still have, sitting there crunching Seti) a Note 2 and only got the 4 because the 2 was in my back pocket when I fell on my butt and the screen shattered. Fixing it was going to cost half the price of a new phone, and it was starting to have issues with the USB jack too, so instead of fixing it I got a new one. It still operates just fine with the broken screen; it's just a bit hard to read and I worry a tad about cutting my finger on a glass edge. Since it just sits still, the USB usually isn't a problem either. Honestly, I think I liked the 2 a bit better than the 4. BTW, I'm on Verizon.

I think I've finally resigned myself to the idea that a phone needs to do three things; Make calls, text messages and e-mail. Anything else is all but useless to me. The Lumia 640 will save me some money in the end. Another Android would have done the same, I simply wanted to give Win Phone a chance. Win Phone 10 is not ready for the Lumia 640. It somehow screwed up the Bluetooth and USB connectivity, so I restored it to Win phone 8.1 and I have not been disappointed. Again, it is just a phone. Samsung is still the best bang for the Buck as far as Android goes. I am to receive a iPhone shortly through work. Kinda looking forward to the new experience.

I'm just glad I have an Android phone, it works well with Windows 7 Pro x64. :)

Agreed, my Android phone played quite well with my PC. I only went to Windows for a test drive. I just came off of contract and the Lumia 640 was only $60. I had to at least give it a chance. The jury is deliberating...

All too often when one tries to force BOINC to run a few tasks before their time the result is that other tasks fail to run. It is far, far safer to allow BOINC to do the scheduling for you, and accept that task may sit for longer than YOU would want.
Don't worry about two days, even with my crunchers I see tasks waiting to run for several days, and don't forget that unlike many other project SETI@Home has deadlines that are set to take into account slow return of results.

Personally, I'll suspend all other tasks in order to push APs through, But only if it is a few APs and I have time to monitor the progress. Otherwise I must agree, let BOINC take care of the scheduling.
