Posted 16 Feb 2016 by ![]() Post: Why? Because neither today's HDDs nor SSDs have the capacity or speed to maintain said index. Precisely how does this 'improve the user experience?" Seriously? MS can access the Cloud more quickly than it can access my SSD? I think not. I don't use the cloud either, except for very specific files, just like using Box...you can turn that off also. But I'm sure you know that already... Anyhow, I don't keep tinfoil in the house, so no hat for me.... |

Posted 9 Feb 2016 by ![]() Post: Years ago, I remember reading a tech news site article that translated an article from a German tech site which discovered something unnerving about the (then) shiny and new OS known as WinXP. They discovered that whenever Windows Media Player (or Center) was used to play a DVD, XP would contact Redmond and inform them of what was being played. I still use Windows Media Player. With ALL Privacy Features turned off of course. I also use Soundspectrums Gforce visualization. It works just as it did with XP or Win 7. I wouldn't trade it for another media player, at least as far as music is concerned. |

Posted 1 Feb 2016 by ![]() Post: AMD can be problematic also. I experienced a black screen myself, a reboot recovered the rig. Now I won't install new drivers without using DDU in full clean and reboot mode. I have the latest Crimson drivers installed now. My cards were purchased open box and used; 2 R9 280Xs. They are Powercolor and actually didn't receive very good reviews, they work quite well though, crunching or gaming. I got both cards for less then $200 each, great deal. |

Fastest available HDD (2016/Jan)?

Posted 30 Jan 2016 by ![]() Post: From what I get on Internet the Helium filled disks are the fastest. But they cost a lot more. 8tbs for $1000! I couldn't find the transfer rates, but the power savings (23%?) alone make them worthwhile for server farms. Still only 7200rpm... Interesting though... |

Running two R9 280Xs here, 4 GPU WUs at a time (APs) 6 GPU WUs otherwise, with no problem with the latest Crimson driver. Also running the latest Windoze 10 Pro. Posted 30 Jan 2016 by ![]() Post: If you want the absolute fastest then probably the Intel 750 Series NVMe PCIe SSD's that plug straight into a PCIe x4 slot would be hard to beat. You need a large bank balance though. Seriously! It would cost me an upgrade to my MOBO also. Those drives are scary fast.... |

Posted 29 Jan 2016 by ![]() Post: Personally, I am a SSD convert. However, I help maintain the Family PCs and the HDDs I encounter do their job. It really comes down to personal preference. A quick search on Newegg or TigerDirect will give you an idea of the quality and performance of any drive based on user ratings. In the end, BOOT and application loading are greatly enhanced on SSDs vs HDDs. Just my 2 cents worth.... Peace and happy crunching... |

Posted 27 Jan 2016 by ![]() Post: Putting the OS on a separate drive is always a good idea. If you have enough RAM, you can gain a small speedup for s@h by using a ram drive (Linux tmpfs) for Boinc. Let us know when online :-) Happy fast crunchin'! Martin[/quote] RAM Drive...that's a term I hadn't heard in a very long time... I am a SSD convert myself. The load time for applications is amazing, I don't wait for long. The RAM drive is interesting though, but can it really help? Even with an image to be loaded on boot (because RAM is volatile of course) it still needs the CPU and GPU for compute operations. Now you have me curious. With 16gigs of RAM though, I could try this.... Peace and happy crunching! |
