Is is possible to have the seti folks trace the IP address of one of my machines?
(Message 499114)
Posted 7 Jan 2007 by paul Post: I'm following this too. We had a team member a couple of years back that got his laptop back the same way, with the cops tracing the IP returned by his SETI client running hidden as a service. Also, in both instances, Scott had given the information to the investigating officers, who quickly used the IP address to track down the suspect. Just give your investigating officer a call, they'll be thrilled to solve one so easily. |

(Message 499092)
Posted 7 Jan 2007 by paul Post: Hi John, Anxiously awaiting the new clients here! You and the coding crew's work is very much appreciated! My dual core clients, all desktops substantially overclocked with good memory, using Simon's app across the board.- (2) E6600's @ 3300 mhz one is at 2180 RAC, the other 1800, should rise to the same level (1) E6400 @3300 mhz 1940 RAC (1) E6300 @3300 mhz 2000 RAC, has had weird hdd issues lately, and has dropped off, but on the way back up (2) 920/30D's @4000 mhz 1300/1400 RAC (1) Core Duo 2.0Ghz laptop, 1000 RAC, has dropped a bit due to the occasional Pirates work received |

BoincView 1.4 released
(Message 497178)
Posted 4 Jan 2007 by paul Post: When you use BOINCView to attach your hosts to a project - it brings up a list of projects to make the attaching process easier. Unfortunately, it was only current at the time when BOINCView was released (and it hasn't been updated in ver 1.4). Indeed, now that is a useful feature, thanks! |

Uh-oh.......can't upload completed results?
(Message 495530)
Posted 1 Jan 2007 by paul Post: During this refusal by the U/L servers (or whatever) to accept returned results, the concensus seems to agree to "suspend network activity" using the drop downs in BOIN C Manager! I'm seeing the same thing on a Conroe running Crunch3r's 5.7.5.32 32bit client, but not on the standard 5.4.11 client. |

T2500 or T5500
(Message 483090)
Posted 15 Dec 2006 by paul Post: Hi. I tried to find this information, but i'm totally lack of time. I checked with some people on our team running Conroe desktops @ 2Ghz to see wether or not I should replace my T2500 with a T7500, came to the conclusion that there was not going to be a huge difference in RAC between the 2 versions. Here's my laptop - Inspron E1705 with T2500 Of the cpu's you list, the T2500 would have the better RAC, IMO. Paul |

best cruncher for under 500?
(Message 482778)
Posted 15 Dec 2006 by paul Post: How about a mobo with 965G chipset, like Asus P5PE-VM or Gigabyte GA-8I865GME-775, with inbuilt graphics and forget the graphics card. The 945/65G boards I've seen do not have a PCI lock on them. So OC will be limited to 340fsb or so, and even then, your pci bus will be running pretty high. In my experience, not a good thing for a dedicated cruncher. I'd also stay away from the 63, since the multi is low, you'll need some really fast ram to get a decent OC. Now, I'm not sure how far you'd like to go with the OC, a lot will depend on this. All my Conroes are running 3200-3350 Mhz. They start needing a bit more vcore at that point, which I'm hesitant to do for a 24/7 cruncher. The 63 needed some good binned fatbody d9's to run 470 Mhz to get there, the 64 , 420, the pair of 66's 370fsb. I'm running them all on Gigabyte's 965P S3's or DS3's, both boards perform the same for me. Getting away from the 500 price tag a bit, but there is a lot of potential in the Conroe's, quite a few of our team members wish they would have spent a bit more on cpu and ram once it's all said and done.... |

TSWB hacked our Team page here at Berkeley
(Message 413995)
Posted 3 Sep 2006 by paul Post: As most may know TEAMSTARFIRE had a split and the other members formed a new team TEAMSTARFIRE World Boinc before leaving and transferring team founders they changed the team logo to their server. Knowing this is a long holiday week end they changed the team name and graphics. so that it would be hard to correct the changes they have made. This is an offense that Berkeley should not let pass with out penalties. A: No, the pic was hosted on our server for quite some time, Hank. It was there long before the DCS actions forced us to form our own true World BOINC team, something we had long fought for. B: You know what they say about assumptions..... The holiday weekend had nothing to do with it. What happened was a post was deleted where some TSWB members posted about passing their old team, DSLR Starfire, in Seti RAC. After all the recent events, and especially the heavy handed moderation that has been going on over there, the picture was replaced to show their extreme displeasure at the events. While I don't condone the action, I can certainly see how it came about. Paul |

Strike requests
(Message 329341)
Posted 7 Jun 2006 by paul Post: I for one appreciate the long hours and tireless dedication to the project, Eric. Your response echoes many of our opinions at BBR Team Starfire. While Starfire hasn't endorsed the strike, some of our members have switched to other projects until the bugs get worked out, a few in support of the strike, some actually ramped up production because of the it. We feel the credit system is fair, even to the detriment of Starfire as a ranked team. My personal comparisons to the Rosetta credit on identical rigs shows Seti credit a bit low to it. What more could be asked for is roughly the same credit between BOINC projects? I thank you for your time, and am sorry you've had to deal with this. I've yet to donate to the project directly, but will soon do just that, I've been inspired.... edited for clarity... Paul |

A Resolution to the Credit Disagreement
(Message 328892)
Posted 6 Jun 2006 by paul Post: Hehehe, I should hope they know I'm posting this. I'm the Starfire moderator. ;-)I see absolutely no problem with the new credit system, since everyone else's RAC has dropped just as much. It did bother me a bit at first, until I wondered about the litmus test.....How does Enhanced RAC compare to other projects? Will two equally configured rigs report the same RAC, with each running a different project? We like RAC as much as the next guy. But to want it to favor our team, that's unethical. Here's Daniel's thread he posted at Starfire, hoping for our support- http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16224883 Also a couple other threads at Starfire pertaining to the "strike"- http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16223135 http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16233949 Some of us have backed off on Seti this past month or so, until they get the bugs worked out. Some may back off because of the strike. Me, I'm on strike against the strike, and am ramping up Seti production. Paul |

A Resolution to the Credit Disagreement
(Message 328710)
Posted 6 Jun 2006 by paul Post: With me not really trying to understand the method behind the old and new credit system, I still don't get why people are upset with the new credit system. Didn't we know back then that we were actually getting inflated credits with 4.1.X? I had a 21K RAC back then, and have dropped to 9K. I also had the fastest Intel dual core in the world running Seti for a while. I adopted Enhanced as soon as it came out, even though I lost the crown immediately. I say this, because I am one of those who build large fleets with my own money, and tweak them as fast as I can. Given the power users arguments, I should be on their side I see absolutely no problem with the new credit system, since everyone else's RAC has dropped just as much. It did bother me a bit at first, until I wondered about the litmus test.....How does Enhanced RAC compare to other projects? Will two equally configured rigs report the same RAC, with each running a different project? I setup my D @4Ghz running Seti Enhanced, and the wife's D @4Ghz running Rosetta. Same fast ddr2 memory, same timings and speed. Gave them both several weeks to equalize a bit, the Seti rig kept dropping, but has leveled off, the Rosetta rig kept rising, has leveled off. Results? My Seti D is claiming 1545 RAC, wife's Rosetta D is claiming 1612. This is how it should be, in my book. The playing field has been leveled. Paul |
