hi guys. i run boinc at full power at all times.
however, one or two particular games i play really struggle.
is there any way to throttle boinc by 50% when playng those games rather than pausing boinc altogether?

im never really idle so i dont think any idling based suggestions are likely to work.

Well, my 24-CPU setup got a slew of about 24 Wu's last night some time, all with filenames ending end _2. So apparently, I'm doing a bit lf "validating". Better than nothing I guess. My personal goal is to reach a total 20M WU's by the end of the year. Prior to the ongoing shortage, that was easily going to be obtained around then end of November. Now, with my total just over 19,980,000 and the fact that 4 hard drives of raw data are on the way, I just "might" do it. But we'll see.
I still remember my first year of doing this back in the early 90's with a 2400bps dialup modem on a "lighting fast" 200Ghz processor with an "astounding" 4MB of memory. I was disappointed that I was but one WU short of 1000 at midnight, December 31st of 1997-1998 I think.

is my memory a little funny? i started seti classic right at the begining under the name of GiGaBaNE (account lost to the ether). if my memory serves (which does not happen very often), Seti was out before the pentium chip...i was crunching on a DX120 and was very pleased as most people i knew only had 100mhz ;)

But keep in mind that BOINC will not crunch at all while those apps are running. You mentioned facebook, that is, browser. I think these days most use browser opened constantly (bad habit actually, but perhaps most have it me including). If this is the case with exclusive app option configured BOINC will never crunch at all.
Better to stick with user activity monitoring per se and also increase number of minutes to start when idle (to not interrupt long clip watching over youtube when keyboard and mouse stay idle ;)

So, IMO your best options are:
1) to use CPU and GPU only when PC is idle.
2) to remove apps from memory when suspended.
3) to set idle period to let say 10 or 20 minutes.

Also, I would set BOINC CPU usage monitoring to zero. Quite useless option and pity it was made default. It actually did not help with lags if any but leaves PC unused when it could be used.

Thanks! was thinking the same with app exclusion, your bang on, her os choice would be 'boot to firefox' lol

the other apps are pretty constant too. i think this is the perfect advice.

if cpu monitoring is off, how does it know when its idle?

An easy way to do that would be in computing preferences, just turn off use CPU and use GPU when computer is in use, and set it for an appropriate period of time.

Thanks. i have done this and it does indeed kill cpu usage, but does not let go of the memory.

conversly, is setting each option to always run, the best way to go from its stealthy state to its most productive?

im sure we have all had the use of family members computers before for extra work and got speeches like "my facebook loads too slow now, remove it please".

im just trying to use every second i can when the machine is idle and to be as slim as possible when she wants to use it. =)

My partner uses her machine pretty heavily for picture editing and facebook.
i would like to set up boinc (just for seti) so that it works when she afk and frees up all its resources as quick as possible when she comes back.

does the 'computer in use' auto detect work well enough?

are there any extra tweaks i could do to maximise the work while keeping boinc off her annoyance radar?

just went to have a go myself with a completely open mind.
I dont like the website. right off the bat, when you goto the download screen you have several choices of files to download (3 for windows i think) and no real description of what each file is meant to be. dont know if you are suppose to download all 3 or just one of e.t.c

there doesnt appear to be any install guide within easy reach in the faq.
i understand the basic concept but there is no simple way to know what the hell your installing.

not knocking the concept or the program in anyway, but access to simple data is not easy.

i shouldnt need a 'buddy' to explain things either. a random person who discovers this thing by accident and wants to explore the options, should be able to download, install, configure, run and update and change their mind and uninstall and remove from computer without ever having to ask for help.

im out till their procedures are more friendly.

ha guess im still out of luck.
no graphics card here.

what i do have is a fairly brand spanking new A8-6600K APU. and its onboard graphics seems to be doing work faster than all 4 cores put together.

however im currently throttled by 50% due to the slight oversight of forgetting thermal paste. lol

should be here in a week and that will help loads....

If i stick any old graphics cards in my machine, would they class as mini computers too and boost my workrate!?

Hi folks
Doesnt time fly!
I used to be a hardcore cruncher back in the days of classic seti and experienced the birth of setiboinc, but have been out of the loop for about a decade.

Could someone bring me up to speed please, in my day it was a given that not nearly enough computing power was being used for seti. Used to love jury rigging many scrap parts into usable computers just to help that little bit more.

now as i check the news, i hear work shortages! shock horror

Did we really catch up on all that work in just a decade or have things gone really bad.

Im certain everything i should know will be in the threads somewhere, but ten years of reading is a bit much to start on if someone can just give me a super condensed version =)

We in the states generally poke fun at the UK'ers for having bad teeth. I wonder what things the UK'ers poke fun at us statesiders?

we 'UK'ers' generally find how fat your people are quite hilarious.

Seriously tho, "Millions denied access to dentistry in the UK" has to be the biggest load of rubbish i have ever heard.

i have never seen a more open and publicly availible system, it is perfectly possible to walk into a dentist, give a false name and tick a few forms saying your entitled to free care, then get the work done.

Its even easier going for dentistry legitimatly, but my point is any joe bloggs can just walk in and get service.

and if anyone thinks its wierd wanting to go in for medical care under a false name, your probably right, but i try to take real good care of leaving a paper trail.

i put my reccomendation forth that this thread be closed...i sat reading this entire thing for over an hour and i feel i have not gained any new understanding or insight into the situations involed. Instead all i see is random citizens of various countried, sniping at each other with increasing levels of frustration and degradation.

The truth is, whether the American administration lied or not, gave falsestatement or not, they have spin doctored the situation so much, we will probably never know the truth.

as to my personal opinion, i dont care whether it was 'lies' or 'false statements', i belive the whole situation was handled with extreme incompetance, the consequence of which should be an impeachment and fresh election, and a full public review of the intelligence service and its ability to gather acurate info (obviously for security certain things cant be disclosed, but the value and accuracy of current techniques should be ripped apart and the truth of success rates be told to the people that own them)

If you tell someone to tell you a lie, and then you repeat the lie that they tell you, are you then telling a lie? Or can you say some bull crap like : it was bad intelligence and I didn't know it was not true?

That is how I see the bad intelligence argument. The Bush administration strong armed the intelligence services to tell the administration what they wanted to hear to go to war. Then Bush could say that he was only listening to bad intel. Bush & Co wanted war and did everything in their power to go to war.
They got a war and we the people got stuck with the bill and a faultering economy.

I just paid $16 for a gallon of automotive anti-freeze. If that ain't inflation I don't know what is. It was at one of those gas station convience stores, which are always a bit high, but $16 for anti-freeze? Jeez. Batten down the hatches, the seas are going to get rough.

lol only a gallon?! thats 3.785 litres and im pretty sure it costs at least 4 quid for a litre of the stuff here so roughly our 'gallon' compared to yours would cost $30 after conversions...you got it easy pal.

I gotta tell ya, after being unemployed and persecuted since 911, I'd welcome them with open arms...

i find it very hard to believe that the entire state that you live in is prejudice against you. im afraid i suspect one of three things, either your unskilled (therefor work will always be tight when the economy is running hot), your not really looking very hard or your not casting your net far enough. my missus has to goto the next county every night to do her job and mine covers a good chunk of the south of england, fortunatly i dont have to travel long distance very often, more for emergencies. but still i bet there are plenty of black/asian/arab/ and generally globally cultured people in all sorts of skilled work like doctors and business managers e.t.c

Long story short.
Why there is no plan to invade north korea?
Because there is no oil.

Because North Korea has nukes.

exactly!!!!!
America is just a big ol' self rightious bully, and they dont like to pick on countries that have teeth...that why they so desperate to prevent others from having them..its not really because they are afraid they are actually gonna be used against us, by some random foreign leader who suddenly decides one day he is gonna commit suicide by nuking the west...even tyrants, maybe especialy tyrants desire to continue living.

im not saying our country is any better. with ppl like blair in power we have become a nation of sycophants, i may not have agreed always with thatcherite policy but she truly was the 'iron lady'

hi guys, just thought i would add my tuppence worth.

Ok, i dont know the specifics of bush's life as he is your leader not mine, but the general impression we, your special friends across the pond get of the man is that he is a bit of a cowboy with a speciality in quick fire policy making. the iraq war has been the downfall of our primeminister blair, and has caused a lot of misery for the planet...

i suspect that blair and bush had a nice little chat, probably with too much whiskey, and said how nice it would be to 'fix' the worlds troubles, a quick seige here and a quick 'shock and awe' there, and they can be written down in the book of history along side the likes of churchill.

didnt quite go like that tho did it=/

these middle eastern problems we are facing can be split into 3 distinct issues.
iraq - al quieda - islam..

well our troubles with islam in general are the consequence (among others) of the other two issues.

as to al quieda (appologies, i probably am spelling it wrong), well there is always some nasty little group out there looking for its path to glory and we certainly gave them a target for their wrath =(

finaly we have iraq.. all i hear is WMD this and NBC that..the option to invade that country with conventional armies should never have arrisen.
when all is said and done, we the west and the majority of iraq itself had a problem with saddam. if i was the leader of the UK (or USA for that matter) i would not have even tried this whole hype about how vunerable we are and how dangerous that country is...i would have gone the humanitarian route and simply explained to my people that he is a very evil man that kills his own people and we would like to remove him..then i would have held a referendum, if it failed i would keep appealing to the populous again and again till they said yes...then i would have just authorised a massive (massive by the standards used in covert terms) covert operation to assasinate saddam..no destruction no civilian death e.t.c now i know a lot of people would say that just creates a power vacuum and yes that is true, but its not like the iraq people WANT to be ruled over by this kind of person...sooner or later with their own desire for good leadership, backed up by our removal of those tyrants willing to risk their own life by harming their citizens the country would self right..all the iraq people ever needed from us is to dislodge the tyrant(s) that have grown too strong for themselves to remove.

using this style of liberation, backed up with regular contact with the lesser leaders ( to understand what the people want), we may never of had a problem with 'islam' at all...now we are just starting to bully our way through the situation. prime example is the iran situation.

wait america has the ability to nuke us all in a few mins, should we pre empt them? no...abolish ALL nbc warfare or let all genuine nations have the right to build it too..IF they decide to use them againt us the 'allies' then we will just blast them from existence....in short friends..if it isnt freedom and liberty for all nations then it isnt really freedom at all.

Christian pastors who want to recast the “war on terrorism” as a “war on Islam.”

There are Christians:

Qur'an 5:83
And when they listen to the revelation received by the Messenger, thou wilt see their eyes overflowing with tears, for they recognise the truth: they pray: "Our Lord! we believe; write us down among the witnesses.

And there are hypocrites:

Qur'an 2:89
And when there comes to them a Book from Allah, confirming what is with them,− although from of old they had prayed for victory against those without Faith,− when there comes to them that which they (should) have recognised, they refuse to believe in it but the curse of Allah is on those without Faith.

As the Bible clearly stated:

Matthew 7:21-23
Not every one who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, `Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' And then will I declare to them, `I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.'

Not only are these people wrong about Islam

But they are wrong about their own religion as well... ;)

i love the nice little 'terms and conditions' in these books which basicly say, 'i was really written by god, honest...and if you dont believe me then you'll goto hell'

well i am a devout non-believer and my 'faith' urges me to call out to the masses and say 'please see sence, the world is burning. stop believing that some vague deity speaks to us through incredibly easy to fake means, and spend more time DOING good works..we do not need a god to fix this world any more than we needed a devil to break it'.

aww dont take it like that jeffrey, i remember from seti classic we haad a thread somewhere titled 'honk as you pass'. I just happened to notice that i was coming up to your position and thought i would wave as i pass, just like old skool. besides i have had many ups and downs over my seti years and im entitled to what little pride i have with regard to keeping my network pumping out credits and there is nothing like little 'good sport' competition to keep the numbers up.

Now, as to -
dont you think he is getting a little touchy about it

I think a public forum is no place for personal issues...

i wasnt the one that started using personal circumstances to ram religion down peoples throat, i just reacted. and its true i react badly to the whole self pious thing...if i was ver gonna be converted to the faith by someone it wouldnt be because of what happened to them in the past or what came out their mouth..it would be their actions in life that would impress me.

but we are still talking about the people posting in the thread, can we please be be grown up about this, unpleasant things have been said and we need to move back onto the topic of the gods.
