Rookie mistake
(Message 1119562)
Posted 21 Jun 2011 by Careface Post: Yeah, uploads are slow with everyone trying to hit it all at the same time. The problem I'm running into is all the pending credit. sheesh I've got a lot of WU's sitting there waiting for wingmen to upload. The only thing I don't understand about that is that always seems to be the reason why "no one" can upload and download anything: because "everyone" is uploading and downloading o_O. Sounds to me like it's a small portion of the community (probably not even the ones on forums) who tie up the servers with their 10+10 day cache on fast (or numerous) crunchers that can happily saturate the 100mbit pipe simply with how fast they get work done, leaving stuff all for the smaller crunchers (sad that my 'normal' 23k RAC is considered small these days, too!) Really, I'm almost all for a per-user speed cap so "everyone" can at least get -something- through. Of course, this is a bad idea and I'm just venting my frustration at this months-long issue that seems be getting only worse :( |

Posted 21 Jun 2011 by Careface Post: Lucky. I've not been able to get work for a heck of a long time. And I have a couple hundred WU uploading that simply won't upload, which means as far as SETI is concerned, I've not done my work and won't get issued any more WU :D Nothing like waking up in the morning to see everything in 12+ hour project backoff. Goodness knows how long it's been in project backoff overnight, heh. And short of me sitting at home all day spamming retry, means there won't be any more work for today at the very least. :( Been with this project (on more than one account) for 10+ years now, and I must admit, tempting to just stop bothering with it, given this.. whatever it is. Spose the plus side is it means less demand = more supply for other users, and my powerbill would go down.. hrm.. |

38g / 275.33 = Much better GPU loading
(Message 1119238)
Posted 20 Jun 2011 by Careface Post: Indeed :) This is what I've attributed my decrease in WU time to. My GTX216 has had ~10% solid increase in GPU load, and it's nowhere near as spiky as it was before. Very consistent and never drops below 80% usage with 1 WU (GTX2xx can't handle more than 1 WU at a time :( ) |

Ah! I never bothered to check priority, as I just assumed it was always been in below normal :) Turns out the system-wide hanging I get is 10seconds into loading the WU, when the thread gets bumped up from below normal, to normal :) So I'll try out an automatic priority changer and see if that helps. Cheers :) |

Posted 19 Jun 2011 by Careface Post: if I'm watching a video on youtube or dvd, playing a game or whatever, the video and sometimes entire system hangs until it starts crunching I've been crunching on this card for 2.5 years now without this issue, so something has definitely changed. I'm wondering if any other GTX2xx users have had similar issues... If not, I'll just revert to x38f where this I can literally just set and forget BOINC and I don't even notice any kind of slow downs (and get no WU errors) no matter what I'm doing... Either way I'm fine with it :) just would be nice to have best of both worlds, so to speak :D |

Posted 18 Jun 2011 by Careface Post: I put x38g_cuda32 and 275.33 WHQLs on my GTX216 last night (my time) and I've noticed a definite speed up :) The only 'issue' I'm having with it is that whenever it's loading the WU into the GPU (that first 15-20seconds or so), if I'm watching a video on youtube or dvd, playing a game or whatever, the video and sometimes entire system hangs until it starts crunching. Doesn't seem to happen if I'm -not- watching a video/playing a game, though it could just be that I don't notice it. Other than that, I've noticed temps have increased ~2C, nothing major, and GPU load sits at a constant 80%+, mem controller load 40%+ and it never dips below these values. Previously, I'd see spiky dips anywhere between 70-85%.. so that would explain the speed up, if nothing else :) Thanks for the release! |

recent server woes
(Message 1114107)
Posted 7 Jun 2011 by Careface Post: I mainly just wish tech forums was staff-only. The only reason I come to tech news is to have.. you know, NEWS. Really frustrating seeing "Last post 2 minutes ago", and finding out that its just someone whinging and moaning about about a non-related issue (even if it's a related issue, it's still not tech news from the people who create the threads).. Of course, my posting this is adding to the problem, but hopefully also exemplifies it, seeing as this post (which will now make it seem as though the thread has been updated) is in fact entirely irrelevant. EDIT: also, on that note, having to scroll through the 50-100 replies in a thread to see a -staff- reply is also the reason I wish this to be staff-only (posting in, AND creating threads) |

Posted 4 Apr 2011 by Careface Post: My 5 day cache has nearly run out.. I attribute this to the fact that when I woke up this morning, the 100 or so WU I had been assigned overnight were in 12+ hour project backoff due to failing to download so many times in a row lol How come the second download server is offline? I've checked news/tech news and I can't find any mention of it.. Same with the backup database.. :o |

Posted 1 Apr 2011 by Careface Post: While the cross-project credit granding discrepancies frustrate me for the exact reason in your thread title, I do this for the science and because I enjoy the atomosphere of other like-minded invididuals who "gently persuade" each other to squeeze that extra bit of performance out of their setups. Having said that, I suppose I'm biased given the team I crunch for, but it's the community here that keeps me coming back and "caring" about my performance :) Truth be told, given that stretching my e-peen isn't high on my agenda, every now and then I do look at my total FLOP count and go "awww yeee, big numbers there :D time to see how long it takes me to get to X" and so on and so forth. I just don't share the info with other people :p well, except for now >_< |

Oh boy, tell me about it! I much prefer XP to 7, but after experiencing some rather hefty bugs with XP 64bit (as I have 6gb of RAM, needed the 64bit OS), I was forced to switch to Windows 7. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, I just miss the old features from XP that they got rid of, for some reason (like quicklaunch! :( this "pinning" things to the taskbar crap is.. crap) Who knows, maybe I'm just overreacting because this is the first time in, quite literally 10 years, that I've 'upgraded' the OS on my main pc (service packs excluded, obviously :p) |

Stat site question
(Message 1090780)
Posted 27 Mar 2011 by Careface Post: Thanks for the reply :) I'm mainly just wanting to see any kind of result from X GPU/CPU - I can calculate RAC from that (so even if there was a couple of results, say it took 20,000 seconds on average for an AP unit, and gets ~600credit/WU, calculating daily output shouldn't be too bad) I forgot about the other stats sites >_< usually I just use BOINCStats, when the BOINCSynergy site didn't update for the longest time. I'll look into it, thanks for that :) |

Need some help picking a Optimized app
(Message 1090577)
Posted 26 Mar 2011 by Careface Post: that all depends on the CPU. IIRC the newer Intel chips (i7's) run faster on the sse4.1 I may be mistaken since I don't do intel chips Though I sense a rather strong hint of condenscension, a quick forum search shows I've asked once, and been told once. Furthermore, I fail to find a reply from the author of the application. Forgive me for trying to help someone else out. |

Stat site question
(Message 1090571)
Posted 26 Mar 2011 by Careface Post: Hello all! So, I see questions popping up on other forums I frequent that are "What kind of numbers can I expect from X GPU/CPU on SETI?", Now, it's nice and easy to get these numbers for the more common cards (GTX series, mainly) as there is so many of them around. But finding out numbers for some of the 'budget' cards is somewhat of a nightmare. I use the BOINCStats.com site, and that's great for CPU breakdowns, but is there a site (or even a way on the SETI site) that will simply let me search for any PC that is running X CPU/GPU? Google searching doesn't seem to work as well as I'd hoped. For instance, searching "site:setiathome.berkeley.edu HD 5670" brings up a massive.. well, 0 useful results. I'm fairly confident that there is a non-zero number of those cards crunching SETI. Am I just overlooking this simple function in stat sites? o_O thanks in advance! |
