My favorite piece of bear encounter advice.

Montana Grizzly Bear Alert:

In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Montana Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert of bears while in the field. "We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear." It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear excrement: Black bear excrement is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear excrement has little bells in it and smells like pepper.

It's been running on my XP machine for over 24 hours. So far it's behaving but I don't like the way it displays pages compared to the IE6. The lettering isn't as crisp on web pages now.

The text is fuzzy because of Microsofts decision to turn on ClearType by default in IE7. It can be turned off if you don't like it. Here is a link to a Microsoft blog that talks about the decision IE7 ClearType

Toby,

If you upload a PNG file don't worry about the 4K limit. I also tried cutting down on the number of colors to get to the 4K file limit size. But after doing some tests it appears file size does not matter as long as your picture is a 100 X 100 256 color PNG. I made this current avatar from the jpg file in you previous post. The PNG file that I uploaded had a size of 7.98 KB.

edit:
This avatar is from a pic I got from google images.

Based on all the sugestions in this thread I think I have the put together the steps currently needed to upload a good quality avatar.

I started with the tiff from Joseph's post.

Using The GIMP photo editor I scaled the image to 100 X 100. Then I changed the Image Mode to Indexed and a max of 256 colors. I then saved it as a PNG file using max compression.

Then uploaded this image. This is the best I could get it.

PS

If your photo editor does not have an easy way to change the number of colors in a PNG image you can use these steps to achive the same results (at least they worked for me.)
Scale the image to 100 X 100 then save it to a GIF file. Then re-open it and save it as a PNG. Then upload.
