Does anyone know if there will be a new type of Seti@home in the future??? After 20+ years of donating my time and computing, I'd hate to think this is it.....

Very sorry to hear that it was time consuming. Hopefully, with the clean up that you did, you won't have to do it again next time (a little house cleaning goes along way).

Sorry for the troll thing, heat of the battle you know (me vs computer software). Everytime boinc changes I have to play this game and it gets old. Have a great day!

I can't read threads on the forums. I recieve this error: Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /disks/setifiler1/home/boincadm/projects/sah/html/inc/forum.inc on line 177

Funny thing is the fact I won't be able to read any replies given to fix this problem. I see others are having the same issue so I can only hope that a fix will be posted on:

  • A)the home page.
  • B)the help page.
  • C)or someone writes a way fix to: bnkyboy@yahoo.com

lol thanks

Oddly enough, it doesn't happen on every thread, it's kind of random. Hmmmmmm

Nope still didn't work and I can't uninstall Boinc either because of the same issue. I can install/uninstall others programs, just not Boinc. My system isn't overclocked either, besides my problem isn't stability(I love how people DON'T READ): I can't update the client to the latest version. Also I never said it wasn't stable "ONCE you got it running". And here I thought Trolls were reserved for newsgroups.

Please keep comments like that out of these boards. It will not get you better help by calling other people (who you never met before) names that you do not want to be called either.

When people don't read the posts correctly, then I don't want their help. IMHO

If mmciastro's post doesn't help, then try the following:
- For now put the Seti project (and any other project you have) to No New Tasks/No New Work.
- Run your cache dry. Report all results.
- Exit BOINC.
- Navigate to your \\BOINC\\ directory.
- Make a copy of your account_*.xml files and write them to another directory for safekeeping.
- Delete your whole BOINC folder by hand (make sure it is out of the recycle bin as well).
- Use regedit to open the registry and delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley
- Delete BOINC.msi in C:\\WINDOWS\\Downloaded Installations (can be more than one, check all subdirectories.
- Delete BOINC.scr in C:\\WINDOWS\\

Reboot the computer.

Install BOINC to another directory, preferably on another partition or physical harddrive. When installed, exit it. Copy the account_*.xml files back from where you had them for safekeeping. Restart BOINC.

I ended up manually deleting all references & files to Boinc/Seti on my hard drive & then repeating the process in my register(Very time consuming). Then I was able to install the new version of Boinc. So I guess I'm good until the next version is released and I have to do it all over again. I can only imagine the troubles I'd have if I use this PC for something other then Seti.

Oh well, I'll run this until it becomes obselete, then I'll be done too after 7 years. Bionc has been nothing but a pain in the @#$ anyways. They should have stayed with the old SETI. I just wanted to help in the search, not become a programmer.

Well, that's your choice.

Personally, I've been using BOINC for a few years now and have not had one single problem on any of the 20+ systems I've installed it on. I've even had non-tech friends install BOINC on their systems without issue as well.

Before you think the above is bragging or a putdown, please take note that my intention of divulging this information is to simply let you know that it's usually user error or overclocking/heat issues that have made BOINC a nightmare for most people. BOINC itself, despite what people have claimed, is quite stable and runs well on most systems without needing a computer degree.

If you really wanted to help in the search and still wanted them to stick with the old SETI, then you'd no longer be able to help (and if you kept up to date with their information, you'd know that). See Ageless's reply for link to the information about SETI Classic's demise.

I certainly hope that Ageless's suggestion to clean up the Windows Installer helps and you can continue with us to find E.T.I.

Make sure you have the latest Microsoft Installer (download it using Windows Update). Reboot once you've got it installed. Re-download BOINC and try again. That usually solves the problem.

I went to M$ and downloaded & installed the new installer thing, but still no-go for installing the latest version of Bionc 5.4.9. My system keeps asking that I locate Bionc.MSI and when I do, it says that version is incorrect. Oh well, I'll run this until it becomes obselete, then I'll be done too after 7 years. Bionc has been nothing but a pain in the @#$ anyways. They should have stayed with the old SETI. I just wanted to help in the search, not become a programmer.

I've been a Clasic SETI user for years and have had no problems. Now, Bionic is giving me a headache!

When I click Attach to a Project, I enter http://setiathome.berkeley.edu

The next screen that appears is Proxy Configuration. Franky, I have NO IDEA on what to enter. Please let me know so I can run Bionic.

There should be simple instructions for non-geek types like me. Any of that form of help available?
Stan

Seti is having problems right now, so give things time. Also make sure you firewall is set to let Boinc run.

Firewall Settings:
Go to Control panel, Windows firewall, then the exceptions tab and then the add program button. Add these two programs to the exceptions.
Boinc.exe
BoincMgr.exe

I'm having the same problem with one of my computers. The other one updated without a hitch. My firewall has Boinc & Boinc Manager listed as an exception and I can connect to the internet ok, so I'm really confused.

I guess when all else fails, start over from the beginning. I do like the new release 5.2.2 or at least 50% of me likes it. lol

I've disabled the screensaver on the Boinc Manager(ver4.45) and everything seem to be functioning properly. I'm still baffled by this. Why does the Boinc screensaver cause me to lose my client IP address on my wireless? How does the screensaver interfer with the AP's operation? Oh well, it's working and that's all I need! lol

I think I've narrowed the problem down abit. It seems when I'm running The Boinc Manager I lose my client IP address to the wireless. It will show up as Address 000.000.0.0 instead of the normal 192.168.xx.xx. When I close Boinc the wireless re-aquires the IP. I'm more confused now than I was before. I'm going to try disabling the screensaver.

I recently had some problems uploading finished WU's when I was running BOINC Manager ver 4.25, so it was suggested I update to version 4.45, which I did. I still can't upload WU's but now I can't access the WWW when Boinc is running (even in suspended mode)Hmmm! I must exit the program(boinc Manager) completely, then open my browser. It doesn't matter if I using IE or Firefox.

  • P4 2.4GHz, 512RDram, ATI 9600 256ram
  • Belkin 802.11g with WPA2/AES Encryption.
  • Windows XP (sp2)
  • IE 6.0 or Firefox 1.0.7
  • DSL 1.5/256 (Frontier)
  • I checked for any hardware/software updates

I didn't have these problems when my network was wired. Any Ideas? NO! I won't go back to wires. (But thanks for playing our game) lol

Does Boinc not like wireless? lol

My problem is Boinc doesn't send completed WU's unless I "Update project". Boinc will upload new WU's to process, so I know my connection works. I do notice a terrible decrease in proformance of my wireless when Boinc is running.(Ex. slow internet, slow loading of pages & page not found stuff). When I increased my wireless security from 128bit WEP to WPA-PSK/AES is when things started on Boinc. Why would encryption of my wireless mess things up?

I'm not a network guru, hopefully one will be along to see this. But I did notice that you're using BOINC core client v. 4.25. As I recall there were some issues that have been fixed in the current recommended version, 4.45. You can get the newer verion here, it may help. Helpful instructions on upgrading are in the Wiki.

Duh!!! Thanks
That should have been my first thought, Guess I need a vacation after moving from Las Vegas to Southern Arizona. Usually an update will fix your problems.
lol

Thx again

What a waste of bandwith, Robthewog. I think a simple statement like: "I can't upload my work units." would have worked. Try reading the Technical News and Server Status page.
