On this morning's ride to pick up the son at work I was listening to the local talk radio show and they made a couple of interesting points:
1) One year ago, Hillary, the DNC, and mainstream media were pressing Trump if he would abide by the election's result and how it would be the end of Democracy if he didn't. Here we are one year later and it is Hillary, the DNC, and mainstream media that are the ones refusing to abide by the election's result.
2)How Hillary and mainstream media blame the Russians for leaking the emails of the DNC that were damaging to her, but in the last year, they have never denied that the contents of the weren't true.

The way to get Boinc to stop replacing the r2572.cl file that was the simplest way. was to turn off checking of file sizes by changing the setting in cc_config.xml. This does leave the client less secure, but I can live with it. The changes to the file were mainly to some define statements to activate the Petri NVidia code which involved changing a couple 512s to 256s. I also changed a some of the kernel sizes. If you would like to look at the file it is available here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!ArIvftV8roEagXbgN2hVhHdobR4s

Still waiting to get some AP tasks from the main Seti scheduler to see what effect the changes have with real data.

What most leaders of the Western world and the progressive left fail to realize is that the "Religion of Peace" has been at war with other religions since its inception. Christianity was like this until its Reformation in the late middle ages. The leaders of the "Religion of Peace" refuse a reformation and that the so-called moderates in the religion are unable and/or unwilling to reform it. President Trump and the President of the Philippines recognize this war; The question is will the other Western leaders and progressives realize this in time to do anything about it?

c) speaking to one of the CERN guys in a coffee break, CERN does not run as many experiments in winter as in summer because the price of electricity is higher then!
Well that certainly seems counter-intuitive, but there must be a good reason for it, I just can't think of one.

Summertime => air conditioning => higher electric usage => higher price per kWh
Wintertime => heating => higher electric usage => higher price per kWh
Spring + Fall => natural cooling and heating => lower electric usage => lower price per kWh

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The top House and Senate Democrats said Wednesday they had reached agreement with President Donald Trump to protect thousands of younger immigrants from deportation and fund some border security enhancements - not including Trump's long-sought border wall.

Love it. The RINOs had their chance and blew it. He's shaking up the GOP which is why I voted for him in the primary over Cruz.

As far as I know, the only way to get to the Boinc subdirectory to create or modify a config.xml is to root the device. Of course, this tends to void any warranty the device may have.

Hi Dave and Grant, if you look closely at her tasks results you will find that the ati_cat132 tasks run and complete successfully with the preference settings EOL uses. The ati5_SoG_cat132 and ati5_cat132 tasks are the ones that are being postponed due to a lack of memory. After 100 postponements, the task errors out. This is the problem that EOL originally asked help for. Hopefully, with the right command line parameters, we can get the tasks to run. Once this problem is solved, we can offer EOL ideas on how to get the system running more smoothly.

If we are unsuccessful in getting the tasks to run, EOL will have to abort any ati5_cat132 until the server learns to just sent ati_cast132 tasks. Or EOL will have to use an app_config or app_info file to tell the server to only send the ati_cat132 tasks.

Edit: Good catch Dave, hate it when things get posted while typing a long reply:

Looking at your stats I see you are using Rosetta as well, is this a new project on this PC? Please try suspending Rosetta as it has a graphics display and maybe this is preventing SETI running on your GPU.

If EOL is also running a Rosetta task or a Seti CPU task and using the screensaver which only runs when the computer is not in use. This would definitely be the cause of the lack of memory for the Seti GPU ati5_cat132 tasks. The ati_cat132 tasks are probably just squeezing in with the amount that is available.

Sorry for the "detour" but I thought it would be better to be clear on this.
Hopefully, BOINC will figure out eventually which tasks can the specific pc handle or the problems will disappear as they came (i am dreaming right?)

Yes EOL, Boinc will learn, but it will take awhile. Since you have so many ati5-cat132 tasks still in your cache that we know will fail, let's try to get them running.
I have not upgraded to Windows 10, so I am going to make a few assumptions here that the file manager is still called Explorer, and the basic text editor is still called Notepad.
One other assumption I will make is that you are running BoincManager in the advanced view.

Now we need to find the empty command line text file in the Seti project directory. In a typical Windows 7 install, this directory was located at:
C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu
Once you have found the directory using Explorer, scroll down and find the command line file for the ati5-cat132. The file name should look something like:
mb_cmdline-8.22_windows_intel__opencl_ati5_cat132.txt
Once you have found the file, double-click it to open it up in Notepad. Type the following parameters in on the first line. DO NOT hit the enter key.
-v -sbs 64
Save the file and exit Notepad.

The changes to the command line file will not affect the current task executing but will take effect on the next one that starts, be it a new task or a postponed task. Open BoincManager to the tasks tab. If tasks say in the status column "Suspended, Computer is in use." Please click on "Activity" and under GPU select "Use GPU always". Observe what happens to GPU tasks and let me know what happens.

Edit: Looking further, your ati5_Sog_cat132 tasks are also failing, so please put the same parameters into their command line text file:
mb_cmdline-8.22_windows_intel__opencl_ati5_SoG_cat132.txt

The article has to use the "If" because the investigation has not been completed. Read the entire article, it is about "possible" fraud involving same-day registering voters that used an out-of-state driver's license to register. The possible fraud involved was noticed in that many of those voters failed to obtain a new state ID from New Hampshire, so were they really residents as they claimed or were they really from the neighboring states? The President's committee investigating the possible voter fraud doesn't meet until Tuesday. An investigation takes awhile, someone has to physically go to each of the new registrant's address to verify that they are actually living in the state and inquire as to why they haven't obtained a new state ID and/or registered their vehicle with the state. If the voter can't be found living within the state, then the vote mostly likely is fraudulent and if enough votes are found fraudulent, which is quite possible, then the election outcome for that state is incorrect.

Yes, Grant, you are right that having sensible preference settings will make things smoother, even on his limited resource computer. But EOL is also having a problem with the ati5-cat132 app, in that it doesn't have enough memory on the video card with the app's default settings. The window's desktop manager, the console host manager, and Catalyst Control all use various amounts of video memory that take away available OpenCL memory. And since I have not used Windows 10, I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't new processes added that are also using video memory that competes with the OpenCL memory.

It is the error message in side each failed ati5-cat132 task result that shows the graphics card under Windows 10 does not have enough memory to run the ati5-cat132 app. Each "postponed for 30 secs" in the Event Log is caused by a different ati5-cat132 task. After 100 postponements the app fails the task and returns it with an error status of "too many exits". Boinc does not switch between GPU tasks every X number of minutes like it does with CPU tasks. A GPU task runs until it finishes, or fails, or in this case, is postponed.

It might be possible to get the ati5-cat132 app to run by playing with the -sbs setting in the command line file, but even if it does, and with adding some of the other tuning parameters, I don't think we can get it to be faster than the new Seti CPU app. This is shown in EOL's results listing in that the ati-cat132 GPU app task, that completed successfully, took about 14,000 seconds to run while the new Seti CPU app task only took 11,000 seconds. Until EOL can upgrade the GPU, a decision has to be made, to run two fast CPU tasks, or one fast CPU task and one not-so-fast GPU task.

Hi Bill, I didn't notice that, but the operating installed and is working. So what we are dealing with here is an old two core system with an older GPU that has just 1gb or 1024MB of video memory of which 991MB is available. The missing 33MB is probably being used to drive the monitor. We have an old system trying to run a new bloated operating system, doable, but not smoothly. From his setting of the preferences of limiting processing used by Boinc and by not using the GPU when the computer is in use, it is obvious that the system is not to be a dedicated cruncher, and our task is to help him get it running smoothly.

Looking at what the Boinc system (his computer and the Seti server) has sent his computer we can see that the CPU task for SETI@home v8 v8.08 (alt) windows_x86_64 completed in 189.6 minutes or 3.16 hours of running time. It was started and stopped many times due to the preference settings, but it completed and validated. He also has a SETI@home v8 v8.05
windows_x86_64 CPU task that hasn't returned yet but should be ok. The problem he originally posted about is the GPU tasks that were sent and are failing. He has many tasks for the SETI@home v8 v8.22 (opencl_ati5_cat132) windows_intelx86 all of which are failing and are the tasks that are generating the postponed for 30 secs tasks. The line in the task results: ERROR: OpenCL kernel/call 'Enqueueing kernel:pc_triplet_find_cl' call failed (-54) in file ..\analyzePoT.cpp near line 1393 indicates that the task is running out of OpenCL memory.

I know this since upgrading to an MSI RX480 Armor 8gb OC card when playing with the -sbs setting in the task command line file if I set it too high I get the same sort of message. My card has 8gigs of video memory, but because the Seti OpenCL apps are only 32-bit apps only 4 gigs is seen by the apps and AMD limits the OpenCL amount to 3 gigs. On my card any -sbs setting of 1536 or higher causes the task to be postponed due to the lack of memory, just like EOL's.After 100 postponements, the Boinc fails the task and it returns with the Exit Status: -226 (0xFFFFFF1E) ERR_TOO_MANY_EXITS

He has also been sent some SETI@home v8 v8.22 (opencl_ati_cat132) windows_intelx86 GPU tasks that are running ok and completing. So he could do nothing and eventually the Boinc system will figure out not to send the ati5-cat132 tasks and only send the ati-cat132 tasks. It may be possible to figure the correct command line parameters to put into the ati5-132 command line file to allow them to get to run.

Before you even consider that conveyor system you need to study the art/science of loading container ships.
You will soon realize it is as stupid unrealistic idea. If for no other reason than the last ones off need to be the first ones back on.

That problem would be easily solved by reversing the stacking order at the original loading port for a ship that would use the conveyor. If they can build a system like they have for the new containment building at Chernobyl ( Building a new containment building and sliding it into place), someone could design a container carrying conveyor. Just don't know which would be more cost effective?

What could go wrong? Yes, there are some risks that a missile could miss its target. Don't remember the range of a shipped launched one, so possibly it could make landfall. Back in the 80's onboard the USS South Carolina CGN-37 we had a test missile come off the launcher and one of its stabilizer fins failed to deploy. The missile came down the starboard side of the ship about ten feet off the water and five feet from the ship and crashed into the ocean about a hundred yards ahead of the ship. But like I said, it would give the boys some practice and it would give us and the Chinese and Russians an example of how the system actually works in real time and not just in tests. Considering the problems the 7th Fleet is having in seamanship, I'm sure the weapons crew could use some practice also, and it would be good to know how well the system would actually work if the three big super-powers ever got into a conflict.

40) Message boards : Number crunching : How to manage switch between tasks? (Message 1888621)
Posted 8 Sep 2017 by Profile Darrell
Post:
Switching between task every X minutes, the X must be a positive number greater than zero. So look at your tasks results and see what the longest time a task takes to complete and set the number of minutes to a value greater than that. You have a 12 core processor, so to run 11 Seti tasks take 11/12 = 0.9166667, so go to your Seti project preferences on the Seti website and set your resource share for Seti to 90% and on the POGS website set its resource share to 10%. POGS has no GPU apps so you don't have worry about it sending a GPU task. Too use one of the 11 cores for a Seti GPU task use the following example of an app_config.xml file in the Boinc Seti project folder:

<app_config>
 	<project_max_concurrent>11</project_max_concurrent>
  	<app>
    		<name>setiathome_v8</name>
    		<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
    		<gpu_versions>
      			<gpu_usage>1</gpu_usage>
      			<cpu_usage>1</cpu_usage>
    		</gpu_versions>
  	</app>
        <app>
    		<name>astropulse_v7</name>
    		<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
    		<gpu_versions>
      			<gpu_usage>1</gpu_usage>
      			<cpu_usage>1</cpu_usage>
    		</gpu_versions>
  	</app>
</app_config>

It will take awhile, but you should eventually end up running your desired results of 11 Seti tasks, one of which is a GPU task, and one POGS task.
