.. then there's the whole 'Running the Windows Boinc Client under Wine under Linux' just to heat the house.

Where remote_hosts.cfg is a list of IP addy's you want to allow to connect to the Boinc server.

.. then you can use utils like boincview without having to use the switch.

Well, I clicked on your computer (via your profile link).

I'm going to guess a few things.

1. Maybe your computer calculates things differently than the other computers occasionally. (heat, cpu, memory, geeky technical reasons)

2. There's a lot of 'pending' and 'in progress' results listed. Maybe the other two computers return a result. The guys at boinc kick their server a few days later, and the database updates some stuff, and immediately grants credits to the other two machines which have returned results, and declared your in progress work unit as 'timed out' or something.
So, in that case, I'd suggest having your pc connect to boinc two or three times a day.

I don't really know why your machine doesn't get credits, so I'm just speculating.

Which is why there's a 50% chance of a LHC work unit validating.

I've had no problems with using a flashdrive.

Besides, they're cheap.

Also, linux keeps things in the ramdrive in the /mnt/sda1 folder, and updates the /dev/sda1 hardware device when it's convenient.

Wine is a little bit flaky. It runs if you have normal programs which access standard libraries, but things don't work if the software tries to use the hardware directly or tries to access some sneaky windows handles.
The Wineserver sometimes stays in a zombie state if the windows app crashes.

Wine is just an adapter that lets win executable run under linux.. not an emulator. I've seen Xnews connect to the net faster (5%) under Wine than it did under Win98 or XP on my home boxes.
An true emulator would be very slow, but would truly simulate a windows install.

Myself, I like to go out for a walk if I'm feeling blue.
I also have a bunch of extra flourescent bulbs in all my lamps to give extra light for the darker winter months during the rainy season up here.

I suggest a 128 meg USB key to keep your boinc folder on.

Knoppix cloop to uncompress disk images off the CD as it goes.
Technically, the /home folder is in ramdisk, and disappears on reboot.
If you play with knoppix, you can specify a persistent home directory setup on a storage device and have it scan for a file on your disk, and mount the file as your home directory.

Absolute minimum to run knoppix with KDE desktop is 128 megs of ram. My p2 laptop has 160 megs of ram.
When it had a hard drive, it helped to have a swapfile located on my fat partition to handle swapping memory.

When Beta Testing LHC and Boinc, I used a 128 meg USB key to store my results and boinc executable.

If you like Gnome, there's Gnoppix.
I think the Knoppix disk boots a lot faster though.

DamnSmallLinux is usable.
Kurumin fits on a 200 meg mini disk. (It's in Portuguese)

There's a FreeBSD live cd called Freesbie

I'm sure 4.05 will be ok.
it's got it's own set of bugs, but if you're ok with them, then go for it.

My first impression is that it slowly starts using more and more memory.

Currently running 7600 K memory usage. Saw it go up by 8 k in a few minutes.
exit boinc_gui
restart.. and it uses 5700 K memory usage.

Will keep an eye on it. Two data points aren't enough to diagnose a memory leak.

Also.. when boinc is running.. attempting to run a second instance of Boinc results in a 'Failed to clean up the windows socket interface' error.
