We should all be even more excited to hear about efforts to actually process and analyze the data we have already crunched! You know, for the project to actually do some science on the data which we have collated. Clearly should be a GREAT place to start.

Suspiciously, I find no one here or elsewhere is even talking about that aspect of this new initiative. It would be wasted effort for anyone to try and reinvent the wheel when we already have most of the drivetrain here.

Money for more scope time is great, but how about knowing where best to point it? That information may be best gleaned from this massive database we continue adding results to, no?

By the same token, adding more results to a database no one (at the moment) seems interested in/or capable of processing leaves one wondering if we're approaching the definition of insanity.

Seems like if SETI@Home has collected information of value over the years, now is the time for it to be put to use and allow it to shine.
If not, be honest, call it what it is and let it go...

I would discourage from rescheduling in general - you don't want to rock the boat more than you absolutely have to.

Reading deep between the lines here, dangerous I know, but perhaps some feel that a serious rocking of the boat is the only way to inspire change or improvement?

Besides isn't the religious manta here all about how S@H participants are discouraged from caring about their RAC and/or overall credit?
No toasters for you soup guy...

(e.g. If RAC/Credit is really that important, one should be running Collatz or the like where the payout is much much better.)

Is there a question here somewhere, or why are you posting your new hardware?
Or is this some kind of advertising?

I don't know, I'm always happy to see someone get new hardware and follow their progress with it. I can't imagine I'm the only one in that boat. Besides, it is at least relevant to their "Number Crunching" SETI.

I think the latest video, posted about an hour ago, may have some of the answers you seek.
Q&A: How Often Does SETI@home Discover a Promising Candidate?

Thanks for this link.

Sounds like 2004 was the last time they "turned the crank" on the database.

Leaves one with more questions than answers really...

Don't get me wrong, I love the project, otherwise I wouldn't be here. But I would rather KNOW then have to BELIEVE. It's science, not a religion.

And BTW: Did it ever occur to anybody that there may be a link between the lack of fundings/donations and the lack of information/communication?

Your question seemed to be "Are we looking for aliens or is this s social experiment?". Is that an accurate summary of what you were asking? If SETI is a social experiment. Then the guys in the lab are subjects as well. A lack of resources doesn't change the science of what is being done.
Just because you can't proceed to step two, right now, doesn't make step one irrelevant or not the science that you want to be done. It could take years before for what is done today to be of use. It could even span generations.

I don't think "social experiment" ever entered into the thought process.
(My technical propensity has a hard time staying awake through dissertation from that side of the humanities anyway.)

OR:

"Social experiment" in that asking hard question(s) would predictably bring out the newbie neophyte's with their pitchforks and torches asking "what the F##k you doing here"? NO, but I did expect that might happen, and hence, why I asked to be pardoned for the blasphemy beforehand. Didn't work...

Science, as in science the project intended, was my question.

As it is, I fear we are doing simple data algorithm collation and nothing more. Meanwhile, some try to pass it off as "science" and bristle at anything to the contrary. (The mere suggestion of such will probably bring out more pitchforks and torches.)

Simple data collection and collation to be added to a database for later analysis is fine, but what do we call it?

Anyway, back to science: Several years ago there was someone in the Lab that was, as I understood it, using some of our data to search for pulsars, quasars, blackholes and/or some other anomalies in space. May have been a post-doctoral someone, but it was project germane. Sadly, the exact specifics of it escape me at the moment, but that was the true intended gist of my question.
[EDIT]: Is anyone currently using our results for project science?

Thank you, HAL9000.

Yes, thank you HAL.

From your reasonable answer, will the data from those new streams be merged into the unmanageable database or will they (hopefully) start another?

BTW, I do actively read the Technical News section, but sans Matt's or Eric's participation, activity is rather sparse.

Those who don't feel the project is worthwhile should probably find another project more 'worthy' of their computing time. (More work units for the rest of us).

Big +1 if you don't belive in the project what the F##k you doing here in the 1st place ??

While I did ask to be pardoned for the potential blasphemy, do y'all really not like the question because of the potential answer?

(I had just watched Matt's recent video on the status of the NTPCkr, so it is a relevant question.)

I can't remember the exact figure, but I think SETI@Home has barely got one full-time-equivalent paid staff member, spread across half a dozen bodies. I would far rather they were doing work to get science done than spending part of that rare and valuable resource posting here.

Please pardon the potential blasphemy, but from that, I had to ask what exact "science" is being done here?

I know we're trying to find similar persistent signals from space and to that end there is ntpckr. However, due to the lack of various resources, ntpckr is relegated to have about the same priority as project communications with the minions here in the fora.

Resources toward more data streams only allow us to add more data points to a database that is unmanageable (to ntpckr & staffing). More data only feeds into a vicious circle, which may have social science values, perhaps?

So every day the project runs we're basically adding more and more data points to a database that is unmanageable.

Unmanageable with current equipment and with insufficient resources for an underfunded staff.

If the equipment could be "upgraded" to manage the database, would the resources be available to fund proper staff levels to use said equipment before it again becomes obsolete. (That is a vicious circle, not really a question.)

With the above in mind, didn't the GPU Users Group, not all that long ago, do some great work upgrading equipment for the project toward this end?

I will try ticking a box in the nVidia Control Panel for automatic updates.

..but he specified a specific driver (344) for a reason, no?

Auto updates will only get you a newer version that may cause you issues...

Hard to say what low level driver(s) could be causing you pain.

Tried to swap a hdd to a different rig years ago. Pentium something or another. Got it to work, but felt it was never 100% and didn't trust it. Decided a clean install and data copy over was going to be the easier route.

I imagine a newer set-up would be even less cooperative.

Here's wishing you more luck!

Well yesterday I learnt that Fallout 4 is likely to be released late this year or early next, and I just know my 560 will struggle.

I feel your pain.

The same game will force me to pick and upgrade to one of the next gen consoles.

Gaming on the PC is fine, as my near 1600 hours of Civ. V on Steam will attest, but there's just something about first run RPG's on the 60" Plasma.

Interesting. On my oldest Win7 box (2901600), not only am I being urged to upgrade the 9800GTX+ driver beyond the current 301.42, I'm also being offered:

Kernel-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 update for Windows 7 (KB2685811)
User-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 update for Windows 7 (KB2685813)

Another two to keep an eye on. Installing now, wish me luck.

I see those two listed under the Optional or Recommended updates.
They have 38 others to keep them company. Not going there... :)

Rob, I specifically selected to 'hide' the nVida update offered by M$. It hasn't appeared since.

I'm also re-reading what Jason posted, since at first blush, it almost sounded like he sorta advocated updating under certain circumstances.

Win7 says I have a single Important update this morning and in taking a look I see:

nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570

Download size: 226.0 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Important

nVidia Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Other hardware software update released in October, 2012

More information:

Not sure which version they are pushing, but all things considered I think I'd rather stay with my current 301.42 drivers.
Anyone with the Important updates set to auto install will have a (possibly) new driver...
