Credit subtraction
(消息 145263)
发表于:31 Jul 2005 作者: [BOINCstats] Willy Post: Seems it was everything from computers that were merged a while back. Those results also are now gone from my result list. (I was into 2 pages in CP results yesterday, and now it all fits on one). I also merged a bunch of computers about a week ago. If everbody with credit-loss can confirm he/she merged computers, then maybe Carl can fix this. |

BOINC manager slows down Windows
(消息 124838)
发表于:18 Jun 2005 作者: [BOINCstats] Willy Post: A couple of weeks back my system really began to annoy me. It reacted slow to mouse clicks (2~5 seconds before something happened), switching between programs had the same pausing, same with opening the start-menu , and before a program could be clicked also took the same time. It frustrated me to the point I reinstalled Windows. I installed XP x64, but a few days back I also installed XP 32 bit due to lack of drivers. So, I have a freshly installed Windows, and what happens after a few day’s???? Yep, pausing is back. I ran some spy-ware cleaners and started to shut down programs to find the program that caused this. And I think I found it: it’s the BOINC manager. With any combination of programs my system runs fine, except when the Manager is running. So I reinstalled BOINC as service, and prevented the manager from starting: no problems since. System specs: nForce3 chipset, Athlon64 3200+ (the 2GHz, 1MB cache version), 1GB DDR400 RAM, and S-ATA 160GB Hard disk, Radeon9800Pro256, SB Live Digital. The system shouldn’t be the problem I think. I haven’t seen this problem on other systems, I install BOINC mostly as service, and this is the only system I often use. I’m curious if other people are seeing the same problem. It could drive people away from BOINC (it’s really frustrating), and I guess that’s not what we want. |

POLL on recommended Linux Version
(消息 122682)
发表于:12 Jun 2005 作者: [BOINCstats] Willy Post: I must say Debian (Sarge). I played with a bunch of different distro's (Redhat, Mandrake, SuSe), but though is seems difficult, Debian with command line is actualy faster up and running then the others with GUI. And who needs a GUI for a server or cruncher anyway? |

Question...
(消息 116360)
发表于:30 May 2005 作者: [BOINCstats] Willy Post: But I noticed something on boincstats: your host doesn't show up. It does on seti, but not climate. Maybe there's some odd connection there... CPDN had some problems with their XML export a week ago. Te resolve the problem one of the developers changed a setting in the host-XML creation process. The next update CPDN lost half of it's hosts according to the XML file, and it's still getting less every day. (link to CPDN forum topic) I think that in their main database, all hosts are fine, so that shouldn't be the reason for the CPID problem. |

发表于:28 May 2005 作者: [BOINCstats] Willy Post:
I've been een PC technician by occupation for the last 6 years (switched jobs last month), and I have never seen something like Prescott. Not even the good old Thunderbird was this hot. I've seen dozens of Prescotts with idle temps over 50C. Excessive cooling (lots of casefans and a not standard CPU cooler) are required to cool it down. I've seen a 'build by Intel' MCE system with Prescott that also has temperature problems: they can't even cool their own beast. Yes: the cooler is in the middle of the CPU (mounting doesn't permit otherwise with this cooler, but even if it does, the base is big enough to shift a few mm), fan is blowing and Artic Silver compount is used. Not polished, it is fine as it is. I also upgraded the standard fan of the Typhoon with a higher RPM Pabst fan. I truly am angry at my past me that decided to go with Intel instead of AMD. What was I thinking. |

When I installed the cooler I went to the BIOS -> Hardware Monitor and had it running idle for a while. Temperature rose to 50C. That's IDLE! I don't know the load temp because it's running Linux and the mainboard is not supported by LM-sensors. But I still get temperature warnings. Treshold in the BIOS is 70C, so I guess it's hitting 70C on occasion. I'm under the impression that the Big Typhoon is a bit slow to react on big temp changes (when going from idle to full load on a Prescott). |

Pentium 4 Versus XEON For Crunching SETI
(消息 114036)
发表于:23 May 2005 作者: [BOINCstats] Willy Post: Itanium is *NOT* compatible with PIV/XEON on the hardware level. It will not run your everyday programs without emulation. Yes, it's faster when used with native software, but it comes at a price. |

Pentium 4 Versus XEON For Crunching SETI
(消息 113730)
发表于:22 May 2005 作者: [BOINCstats] Willy Post: The internals of the two are mostly identical. Main differences are cache sizes, FSB and socket. The core of the basic XEON is featurewise identical to the PIV. Other models have L3 cache in different sizes slapped on to them (like the PIV EE). This should maken BOINC a lot faster. PIV is always leading in FSB speed (one speed grade further). In the end, I don't think a XEON is worth the money. Neither is a PIV. Cheap Athlon 64's are faster. |

You could put it anywhere on your site, where it least bothers you. It doesn't pay much (especially when nobody clicks), but it covers most of my bandwidth costs. |

I didn't like the AMD (single core) multitasking results one bit, and I'm a big AMD supporter. However, if you can wait a few months, go with the Athlon 64 X2. I can't wait to have one myself. That baby is fast! |

Bug in stats file!!!
(消息 98566)
发表于:14 Apr 2005 作者: [BOINCstats] Willy Post: > Most of the poignant points have been brought up here already. I am getting > about 10 emails a day now saing "Your stats are BUGGY". I am sure Willy, > Neil, Toby and a few others are as well *smile*. > Really? I always get "The other sites are not having these problems, fix it or I'll never come back again! You s*ck!" :) I think the main reason for the current problems is the huge user base SETI has and the enourmous amount of hosts on the project. If I look at the time needed to process the XML file at my end, I guess it must take them a very long time to export the files. They are probably working on a way to fix this, as they fix all problems they run into. And the main problem: SETI has all problems first, fixes them, and when another project reaches the same point (same number of users/hosts/connections to server/bandwidth etc) the problem is already solved. That's why we all think the other projects are executing better then SETI does. |
