61) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC 5.2.2 possible download issues? (Message 180636)
Posted 21 Oct 2005 by [BOINCstats] Willy
Post:
For me an old problem returned with 5.2.2: The annoying slow-down of the system.

When clicking in Start, it takes a few seconds for the menu to open, then another second or two before I can click a program or open a sub-menu. Same with switching between programs: another delay.

Didn’t have this problem with 4.45, but did have it with previous versions.

I’m running 5.2.2 as service on WindowsXP Pro SP2, AMD Athlon64 3200+ (the 1MB cache version) with 1GB RAM and enough hard disk space. Internet via ADSL=always on.

Please tell me you forgot to remove some debugging code, and 5.2.3 will solve this delay-thing.

There are SO many mis-conceptions and BS here.

1. Quad Xeon MPs DO NOT share a single FSB, they have either 2 or 4 memory BUS, depending on the board. Some Duals Xeon DPs share 1 FSB, but there are mainboards with seperate memory BUS.

None of the Xeon chipsets (except the E8501) offers more then 1 FSB. Some offer a dual channel memory interface (except again the E8501 which offers 4 independent memory interfaces (but need extra chips for that)), but all the memory accesses are transported over a single FSB, shared by all the CPU's. So even of the chipset offers dual or quad channel memory, it still has to travel over the single FSB.

The E8501 is only available since 10-10-2005, and will be just as expensive (or even more) as a 4 way Opteron board (that has 4 independent dual memory controllers and 4x HT-bus (when populated with CPU's of course)).

Post:

Anyone got any experience/used a 4 way Xeon MP system? Especially the new dual core systems?

How long would the system take to do a WU using all cores and HT?

What would be the expected output per day, or the expected RAC when bedded down?

John

Hi John!

I'd advice against a 4-way system. The 4 CPUs will share a single front side bus.
Since seti is memory hungry, the CPUs would be competing for memory bandwith.
You'd get more WUs per invested pound if you set up several dual core crunchers
instead.
(Provided, you have the space, that is.)

Regards Hans

I agree with you for 50%. If you go with Intel 4 way, they indeed share the FSB and the available memory bandwidth. The result will be less impressive.

But if you would go for a WINAMD combination, that is quad-opteron dual core, each CPU will have it's own dual channel memory controller. Now that'll be impressive!

Now don't start about stability or heat production. Stability will be at least the same, and the Opteron will run cooler.

Is this dual a HT also? I thought XP only saw 2 processors (real or otherwise). Hmmmmmm.

Topic starter is mentioning a X2, and those don't have HT.

Pentium D also doesn't support HT, only the Dual Core Extreme Ed. has HT.

I have build several X2's and P-D's for testing purposes, and this can happen:

1: Your board has a new BIOS, and supports the X2: install Windows, BOINC and you're done

2: Your board has an old BIOS, doesn't correctly recognize the X2 (Unknown CPU), but it should support the X2: update BIOS, install Windows, BOINC and you're done

3: Your board has an old BIOS, doesn't correctly recognize the X2 (Unknown CPU), and support for the X2 is uncertain: update BIOS, install Windows, BOINC and cross your fingers. It might work, but chances are it doesn't recognize the second core in XP, or you have an unstable Windows

4: 3 can also happen on boards that claim to support the X2

BOINCstats runs an incremental update whenever one of the projects has new XML files available. Only the data for the project with new XML, and the BOINC combined stats are updated during a incremental update.

BOINC synergy or another stats forum (I forgot) had this problem before, and I emailed to the admin.

I guess that was me.

I don't trust the security of PHPBB anymore. I updated after the warning, and kept up-to-date as soon as an update was available. Still my server was hacked by using a PHPBB exploit even though I was running the lastest (4 days old) version op PHPBB.
But this is all way off topic.

P3 3.0 GHz with 1GB RAM.

Normally I don't respond to these "I'm out of here" "Bye bye" or "I'll never crunch for SETI again" topics, but this is really amazing.

How did you accomplish that? Liquid Nitrogen, special sample from Intel?

I’d like to know!

yes

Some of them changed CPID, and then you start with a blank history.

In host-stats a lot of hosts get merged all the time and also start with a blank history (but in hosts-stats these are labeled 'New')

Rotterdam NL in what they call 'the cube'.

The server was unreachable for five hours :(

For those wondering (and everybody goes to this forum if something is wrong with something BOINC related): the BOINCstats server is not down. The whole datacenter where the server is located is cut off of the internet. The reason is unknown so it might take some time, or it may be fine when I post this message.

I hate to start a flame-war, but Intel CPU's don't have as much an advantage as the AMD CPU's have when moving from 32 to 64 bit. Several tests even show that Intel becomes slower in 64 bit while AMD gains some speed.

Oh, man, you're unleashing a flame war again. One will say AMD, the other Intel.

One thing is for sure though: assuming identical clock-speed: AMD wins. Without doubt.

But, as it is now, the clock speed of AMD chips is lower then that of Intel chips. That doesn’t impact performance because AMD chips can perform more operations in one tick then Intel chips.

If you want a single core CPU, your best buy will be AMD: cheaper and much faster in almost all disciplines.

If you go for dual core it’s more difficult. Although the AMD X2 performs much better then Intel Pentium D, it’s also much more expensive. I would shell out the money for the X2, but that’s just me.

Ow, forgot: If you take Intel, you will save money on house-warming. Your Intel will help in keeping your house nicely warm :)

I always look at my stats (that is: BOINCstats) to check for errors, and I have watched the number 1 host in SETI for a couple of days now. The number 1 is a new system every day (another ID) with just a bit more credit, but the same specifications.

Today that system has id 1261329 but when checked (here it has already zero credits, so it probably moved to a new ID again.

What is happening here?
