If I had many computers on my account, I would also hide my computer information. Not because I don't want anyone to see them, I could care less. I would not want to see them all load when I look at my stats on my teams website. A prime example of this http://www.boincsynergy.com/stats/boinc-stats.php?id=21&project=rah with over 13K computer.

I think it is time for this thread to die, I can not believe I just spent the last 2 hours reading.

I did for a long time run an optimized BOINC CC based on 4.45. With an optimized app also running ~13 hours it would claim ~150 credits. I also run 10 other projects, thus claiming higher credit then I should because of the optimized CC. I even tried the optimized CC based on 4.68 build and on some projects it doubled the claimed credit. I did not see this as fair. I now use 4.72 which is not optimized.

I too would like to see the benchmarks done by the science app instead of the BOINC CC. This would make the credit issue fair and reasonable. I just wish all projects would build apps with the fastest code to crunch the fastest. I am in it for the science not the credit.

I think the new enhanced app will greatly increase the likelihood of finding something with possibilities. The current app just skims the signals, not enough resolution.

I have been running the Seti enhanced since it began and would prefer the longer WU's with the better analysis of the signals. On my P4 2.66G client, the WU's take ~13 hours with TMR's optimized app and ~27 hours using the standard app. I now only use the standard app, but once Seti_enhanced goes to active Seti, I will use the optimized app that is made.

If you curious about credit: ~110 optimized, ~240 standard on the above CPU.

It looks like they are getting ready to send messages to Classic Users:

"August 3, 2005: Jeff and I just fired up on old classic SETI@home client on a windows box to test a new server feature to send arbitrary messages to the old clients (to inform users to switch over to BOINC). It was then as it fired up that I realized I haven't seen the pretty colors of that screensaver in over a year. My how times have changed." From Matt's Slog

It actually sounds like it is acting correctly with Einstein, only crunching 8.33% of the time. As for Predictor, I have not been able to get work from them for almost 3 days now, so it is not your client issue.

How your resource share is configured you should crunch Seti for 10 hours, Protein and Einstein for 1 hour each, this is assuming you have switch between apps set at 60 minutes - the default. If it takes your computer 9 hours to complete one Einstein WU, it should complete one in 120 hours wall time, 5 days. However it could go to "earliest deadline mode" before the end of those five days, depending on the amount of Seti work is downloaded causing an overcommited senerio.

Yes, they have done a great job. I am sure they will continue to find ways to make this project even better.

Some more interesting reading in Matt's SLOG.

@ Pappa
I believe Byron is being himself in his posts, signature and avitar. If you look at all the different avitars on these boards, does that mean that person is the image that is being displayed as you implied of Byron? Of course not, that would be foolish. It is simply, as you also stated, something Byron admires and respects.

Byron,
Keep up the great work on keeping people technically informed.

I +1 after Tony's post to +5. Wow, now it is at +18. But I do not see any of the - posting here.

I agree with Tony's view also, as long as it is major/important news, why not post it here.

mmciastro, I did do as you suggested, yesterday before I reinstalled 4.45. And yes, I even purged it in the registry, very familiar with that.
I am now running just fine, it finished and uploaded a few last night, so I am back on normal ground for now.
I'm sure when the crapload of units that got lost time out, my limit will go back down though, just waiting for the inevitable. Still wish there was a way to circumvent that legally. Oh well, I'll still crunch though.

John,
Since you did do all this, SETI created a new client-1197998. Your previous lost WU's will not effect this client unless you merge them. As far as Seti is concerned you added a new computer. You should stay at your quota unless you return WU's with errors on this client. Good luck to you.

Links to all kind of things found on the 'net, where it's hard to decide if one should laugh or cry about it!

Please post links only as people might get offended!

First link is not for the sensitive, and if you have a very good sense of hearing or a sense of absolute pitch, don't open it! Now you're warned!

We're simply the best!

Open at your own risk, and don't complain after!
Not dial-up friendly!

Thanks Fuzzy, it was nice to have a good laugh after reading all the other posts.

Nope, the fora and other web pages don't go over the same connection as the science. They go through a smallband (at least in proportion ;) access via UCB, the science has a direct broadband link to the outer world through Cogent.
That's why they are still usable without problems. (But it would not help to switch, as I've been told with the Cogent outage last time, too much effort for too little use.)

Erm?
Have a look at the UCB routers page.

Seems like during the network maintainence somebody deleted inr-60 (SSL) and it all runs through COGENT!

This URL show the UCB router go phut in week 24.

It really does not matter if all goes through COGENT or not. The webpages are on their own dedicated server -klaatu. The u/d load is currently on the same server as stated in the technical news. My guess is they are now going to use philmor as either up or down load server, thus seperating the two.

I can hardly wait for the whining to begin when they make the switch. Lets begin now:

You did not give us any warning you were going to take down the server. Now I can not download any WU's.

Why should they work part of the weekend??? They didn't know at the time that is was a major problem. And not every business is going to pay for someone to sit and figure out whats wrong with the system.

It had been failing for the better part of a week! It was a MAJOR PROBLEM...

BTW, "I'd like fries with that", as that seems to be something you understand!

I think we ALL have had enough of your (and a few others) stupid statements. Do you have any idea what it takes to troubleshoot a system? It could be hardware and/or software issues. They have stated they are working on a hardware temp fix, so let it go. Get a life. Give everyone a break.

.... Look at all the "whining" (that you think is so wrong), which might have largely been avoided.

No, I don't think so! The whiners will always whine, the attention whores will always jump in, and so goes the story! I have been around here long enough to know that! I remember last summer, first there was no WU's to get, next there was no credit granted, then came the duplicated hosts, ..... , and so the story goes...

There are always some people who's lives evolve around this board!

Just my

Well said.

There are toooooo many with nothing but time on their hands and are spoiled by the instant gratification of information. They have to know everything NOW. And rude.

They are bitching now, just wait until in influx of Classic users. "What do you mean I have to wait to get a WU, I guess my CPU cycles are not goot enough for this project." I am real tired of the "Cheerleader" reference to people that are trying to help.

As well, there is still a backlog of people trying to connect to our upload/download server, which has been buckling under the load since the outage earlier this week. This server is completely CPU bound, so we're looking into ways to lighten its load (perhaps splitting uploading and downloading to two separate machines, but we don't really have a good spare machine just yet).

They do know they have an issue, however a little update on the issue would be nice. i.e. "The upload server is still slow due to the amount of WU's to upload. WU's with the shortest deadline will be excepted first and then other as CPU allocation allows." Or any other information would be great even though it has been only 2 days from the last update.
